I've tried to use the search function but it has not been helpful. Awhile ago there was a post from someone who works at a bank that bought some 50 cent pieces that were worth more than 50 cents. How does one tell if they have one worth more than 50 cents? I understand that they are made with silver but how do i tell? Date? Different markings? Colorings? I have over a hundred dollars worth that I'm turning in but wanna be sure that I keep the right ones?

If I have some should I keep them or sell them now? Who would I sell them to? Thanks for any help!

I know the changeover ocurred around 1960s. Definitely before 1972. The older ones are solid silver thus making them worth more weight wise. I will find out at work...I work in cash office of a grocery store and just had this conversation with a fellow employee.

He took his to a jewelry store to sell.

I'm not sure of the years, although I am sure you could google it. The ones with silver are a different color, they are a true silver. They also sound different when you clink them against other coins or on the table. Once you see one and know what it is, it will be much easier to pull them out. I have some quarters that are silver too!

A Kennedy half dollar minted before 1965 is 90% pure silver and is worth $12.87 (melt price). A Kennedy half dollar minted between 1965 and 1970 is 40% silver and worth $5.26. (melt price) These are todays silver prices- google "silver coin values".

DO NOT sell them to a fly by night "I buy your unwanted gold and silver" shysters. They will only give you a fraction of their true value.

I would suggest selling them on Ebay- they are going for spot prices. ALWAYS and I repeat ALWAYS- insure your item with delivery confirmation.

Ok I have one that I think is silver it's from 1964 and looks different from all the rest. Just wish I had more now! I do have alot of the bicentennial ones though. Anyone know if they are of any more importance than the others? They don't look silver but collector wise :confused3
