Passing on some information I read in Reader's Digest. For you guys who are watching your grocery bill (and who isn't) here are some items that are getting ready to have big price breaks on.

1) BUTTER. The price hovers around $4 a lb for most of the year but will drop 50% to 1.99 during the holidays. Butter freezes great also so you can stock up.

2) SUGAR Look for this pantry staple to take a $1 to $2 price dip with brown sugar and powdered sugar taking the largest dip.

3) BACON Another great item to stock up and freeze. Predicted to take a $1.50-2.00 dip. This one I thought was interesting because a lot of pundits are saying meat prices are due to raise due to the drought. Not sure what type of feed pigs get but maybe the drought didn't affect that.

4) OIL Look for ridiculously great deals on oil at both the grocery and hardware stores, where it's sold for turkey deep fryers. A gallon which normally sells for $35 bucks is said to drop to $20.

5) Birthday Cake mixes Usually drops 50% during the holidays.

Happy grocery shopping.

Sorry I didn't look up a link, I still get RD the old fashion way. ;)

Good to know!

I also know that sweetened condensed milk come back to Aldi during the holidays and it is half the price of our local store. Aldi only carries it during the holidays.

The bacon will go down because farmers will cull their herds to save on feed over the winter.

I always stock up on baking items this time of year. I must have at least 20 bags of chocolate chips in my pantry right now because of their low prices. I prefer Nestle chips and right now they are on sale in many places, but the best deal I've found is at Target. They are usually about $2.79. On sale now for $2.29 plus I keep getting a coupon for $2.00 off 4 bags, so then they come down to $1.79. Great price for a better brand of chips in my opinion.

Is that for the 12 ounce bag?

I think that is the price of Costco's normally priced Nestle.

I need to double check and am going this week.

Another item is canned pumpkin, especially since it is sometimes hard to find during other times of the year. We give it to our cats for hairball prevention, so I always stock up in the fall.

Bingo! Those who purchase whole sides of beef to freeze will get better deals too...probably up to a few hundred bucks!:goodvibes

I alwasy stock up on butter over the holidays! I've paid as little as $1 a pound for Land O Lakes with coupons! :) I normally buy organic but for $1 a pound I'll "make do".

I too stock up on baking items: sugar, flour, chips, and walnuts. They have incredible deals this time of year (even last week I got a few good deals). The shelf life is great, and I buy enough to almost last me a year.

They also have super deals on frozen turkeys. I always buy at least one extra for the freezer. A lot of roasts go on sale too; if you have a freezer with enough space, it's good to buy some extras.

Yes, for a 12 oz bag. We don't have Costco where I live. Sam's price for a BIG bag is just a little cheaper than indivual 12 oz bags - and I can't have an open bag sitting in my pantry. Once it's open the bag keeps calling to me to "just eat a few"! Before I know it, the chips are gone!

I went to Costco yesterday. After I posted I needed to check the price to be sure.

Netsle is actually cheaper than what i said it was.

It is a 72 ounce bag (so 6 12 ounce bag size) for $7.50. It is just over .10 per ounce. That would be about $1 per 12 ounce size.

They also had $2 off per bag, 2 bag limit. I got 2 and my friend got her 2 allotment and I paid her back.

So, I got essentially 24 12 ounce bags for $22. :cool1:

I am planning to make LOTS of fudge this Christmas as gifts, so this is perfect.

As for snacking on them......we do that some, but I also keep the big bags in the deep freeze in the basement, so they aren't "right there!"
