Can you give me the best tips in bringing a 5 month old on a Disney trip? I have brought a 9 month old and a 12 month old but never such a small one. I need all the help I can get!! HELP??!!
We will be staying on grounds for about a week.
(The baby isn't here yet, she's due in August and the trip is planned for Jan.07'.)

Thanks so much experienced ones! I am in awe of your wisdom :worship:

i have not been to WDW with a baby this young but I travelled to Greece with a 20 week old...she was no problem, slept all the flight, slept a lot there (it was hot) copedw ell with the heat and spent most of the time in her pushchair (and to be honest overall she was a hardwoek baby) she was no problem at all...i think a 5 month old will be easier than a 12 month old..i have a 16 month old to go to wdw this year which will be a challenge...a 6 hour time difference and a 10 hour flight! fun... :thumbsup2

I took my DS last summer when he was about 6 mo. old. He was great to travel with! He ate pretty much when he wanted, slept when he wanted, and was a champ in his stroller, waiting in line, and on the rides.
I took my own stroller so he was comfy and didn't have to be carried from the bus/boat back to our room (we stayed at VWL).
Other than following his lead as to when he wanted to sleep and eat, our trip didn't differ much from those trips before he was born.
Good luck!

I think you'll find it easier to tote along an infant rather than an older baby. We've taken all 3 of our kids since they were a month old. Bring things that are familiar to her, a favorite blanky or whatever she uses to get to sleep (music or blanky, whatever).

Bring sun hats for her and sunscreen!! Bring a comfortable stroller and Bring a blanket along so that once in awhile you can lay the blanket on the grass and let her stretch her little arms and legs. The grass here in FL is not traditionally soft, but rather spikey, so bring a thick enough blanket.

Disney has wonderful Baby Centers that you can visit for purchasing things like diapers, baby food, formula, and lots of baby extras, and they have a room with rockers for nursing mothers.

You'll have fun and it should be easy for you at that age. It's when they start walking and want to get out of their stroller that it becomes a challenge! :yay:

All these tips are GREAT I need more....we are traveling to Key West next month with our (then) 4 1/2 month old and then to Disney in September! TIPS ARE NEEDED! First baby!!!!

Definetly get a stroller fan and bring lightweight recieving blankets and clothespins. Put the fan on the baby and then when baby falls asleep keep the fan on and hang a blanket over the front of the stroller to shield from the sun. Use the clothespins to secure it! These are our must have items. Also- swim diapers, sunscreen (don't forget to put it on their feet!), wide brimmed hat, desitin (all that heat can sometimes cause a rash), some small toys, high chair cover (if baby is sitting up by then) lightweight cotton clothes (creepers). Hmmm.... I'll have to see if I can think of anything else. princess:

My 2 year old had her first trip to WDW when she was just about 4 months old. She was so easy. Just had to worry about feeding her. We had her in a stroller with a bucket car seat most of the time. It was easy to transport her and do the baby swap. You will need a good blanket that you can shield her from the sun if she is in a stroller. Just drape it over the top.

Our next trip is in June and our soon-to-be addition should be here in the next 2 weeks, hopefully. She will be around 7-8 weeks old when we go. The only difficult part will be the evening feedings. I'll be tired but the parks are open longer in June and I can take naps in the day with the new baby and my 2 year old if I need it.

Our little one was better than the older ones.. very easy!! I hope you have the same experience we had.

I went in October with my 4 1/2 month old. It was a BREEZE!!! I also have a 4 year old DS, so we took a double stroller. DD was GREAT in it!!! She couldn't sit up by herself yet, so when we went to restaurants, they either let us take the stroller in, or they gave us a special high chair with a baby seat on it. My DD is breastfed, so I just had to worry about finding a place to feed her throughout the day. I went to the baby centers at each park a lot. They were wonderful!!! However, if I wasn't near a baby center and she just HAD to eat, I just used a bathroom stall wherever I was. Don't get me wrong...I don't think there is ANYTHING wrong with breastfeeding in public! But DD HATES being covered and has always had the tendency to push my shirt up to my neck...so everyone would see EVERYTHING...and I am not comfortable with that. :blush: Anyway, I brought jars of babyfood into the parks as well. We never went back to the resort for a midday break or anything. She was an ABSOLUTE angel!

My advice...just make a list of everything you need for your day and pack it in your diaper bag.
* Diapers
* Diaper cream
* Changing pad
* Sunscreen (if you are allowed to use it yet)
* Formula - powder works best. You just need to add water when you're ready! (if you are using formula)
* Baby food
* Bottle of Water, if baby is drinking water yet
* Extra change of clothes
* Wipes - TONS of wipes!
* Zip lock baggies - for dirty clothes...just in case
* Blanket
* Toys for the stroller

Take a blanket and/or a towel to cover your little one from the sun if it's strong. I also suggest BRINGING YOUR OWN STROLLER. Especially for a baby that young. The ones in the parks are DEFINITELY not comfortable and wouldn't really support a baby that young.

You will have a WONDERFUL time!!!!!!! I think it's so much easier when they're younger, sometimes. :sunny:

We took baby #3 when he was about 6.5 months old at the end of Jan. 2004. He was a breeze, but he had been "traveling" since he was 2 weeks old. Most of those were short distances, so that was his first "big" trip. I definitely recommend the sunscreen, and there is a baby spray for the top of their heads as well that is water proof, great for the pool. Remember that it is January and it does get cool in the evenings, even in Fla that time of year! Also, we had a couple of solid rainy days. So, just try to plan. Check the weather before you go so that you will have a good idea. :sunny:

We took DS last year at the same age, in May. We used the sensitive skin sunscreen....since Dr's won't "tell you" to use sunscreen on babies less than 6 mos old, even though ours told us with a wink he was not "allowed" to say go ahead. So we went ahead. He was fine. I tested a bit on the back of his thigh before we left just to make sure it didn't irritate his skin.

In Jan, it is somewhat cooler, so that should be good. Our little guy did well in may last year. He kept his hat on and everything. I think we will have more problems with that this year. :)

We took him on the Safari...he fell asleep. Took him on Haunted Mansion. He slept. :teeth:

He loved being in his stroller...so much to see. And he was fine with the characters. More fascinated than anything. His almost 2 yr old sister would not go near Jafar...DS grabbed his nose and pulled!!! :lmao:

Our guy likes to sleep in his stroller, but DD doesn't, so we would just head back in the afternoon and let them both nap. It was a breeze. He was easier than my 11-yr-old will be this year!! :teeth:

We also learned that since we had 2 babies and 2 strollers and 2 of us, if the bus got full before we got on, we would wait and let others get on so we were first in line for the next bus and that way, we knew we would get a seat.

Just keep her hydrated and let her stretch once in a while and have a great trip!! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the list! I am traveling with DS7 months, DD4 and DS3. So all the tips and packing advice threads are wonderful! It's our first trip.

NO PROBLEM!!!!! You will have an AWESOME time!!!! You and the kids will be HOOKED!!!!!!!!! DS 4 is brainwashed to love all things Disney already. :wizard:

We took my daughter when she was 6 months and she had the best time. She was sooo easy to travel with and she actually LOVED the characters, she got pictures with all of them smiling. She is 3 now and has been there 3 other times and has cried every time since then. So, I am happy she at least got pictures with the characters at least once :) You will find it very easy, I'm sure! Good Luck!

My best tip?

BREASTFEED. Nt only is it the very best thing you can do for your baby (next to loving her).... it's COMPLETELY PORTABLE and FREE! (And it doesn't spoil and never needs warming!) :)

The key is to stick with it for the first couple of months and get through the rough patch. :thumbsup2

Have you seen the Baby Slings. They are great & Jan. can be cold.

Whatever you do, just in case of rain, please buy one of those stroller covers that have ventillation holes in them, these are made specifically for strollers!!
On our first trip with DD many years ago we saw a family, on a drizzily day, pushing their stroller covered with a GARBAGE BAG!!! There is no ventillation provided by a garbage bag and can lead to suffocation! We had just seen a news report, before leaving for this trip, telling of parents that did this at a different theme park and their baby had died. :sad2: We walked right up to them and suggested, nicely, that they might consider finding something else to cover their stroller with, like a rain poncho.

I'm not trying to scare anyone who is thinking of taking an infant or toddler, just trying to pass along helpful info. :goodvibes It's better to be safe than sorry!

I couldn't agree with you more! :thumbsup2

DD's first trip was when she was 5 months old and having traveled with her to Disney when she was two I can honestly say it was easier when she was 5 months old.

There were a few things that made it easy for me.

  • We brought our own stroller. We have a Peg Perego Plikomatic that collapses like an umbrella and was a breeze on the Disney buses. It also reclined fully (great for those impromptu baby naps), has a full sunshade, and storage.
  • I used a Baby Bjorn for every ride. It was so easy because I walked on the ride, sat down, and we were off. No negotiating the seating arrangement. We also brought our fancy pants Keltie and it was way too much backpack for on-and-off rides.
  • I breast fed. That made things very easy and Disney offers mothercare rooms for mothers to nurse or to change your child.
  • It was hotter than blue blazes so we used the misting fans and lots of sunscreen.

Those were the keys to my success and I would never hesitate going with a wee one again.

We took our 6 month old granddaughter along to WDW. She loved it. We had a stroller of our own that reclined and had the sun shield on it and she took her naps in it and we even could changed her diaper when the seat was laid flat for sleeping in it. We also had one of those snugli things that you wear on your body for the baby to face forward in with arms and legs free and she loved that. She slept through the loudest noises which my daughter says babies tend to shut down to them. And as far as rides we would sit back and wait while each other went. Granddaughter loved the Tigger and Pooh meetings and they were very gentle with her. So go for it. But would recommend your own stroller and a snugli... makes life more comfortable for all. :goodvibes
