There is much hoopla going on of a 5 Guys Burger place opening near to our home. They are new to the area and am anxious to try one.

BUT when reading their menu, I see that they fry their french fries in Peanut Oil. I guess that means that my severe nut allergy'd daughter is not able to go there. I think I know the answer, but would like to hear from others.

The more I think of it.....DD will NOT be going there.

We have one opening near us soon too. I don't know anything about the place, but am interested to hear opinions. No nut allergies in our family so that won't be a problem.

But the weird thing is that it's opening at Patriot Place where there is already a Red Robin. I can't wait to see how they compete since they are mere steps from each other.

No she will not
in addition to fried in peanut oil
the have crack and shell peanuts with shells all over the floor

Well, they have big signs posted about the fact that they use peanut oil. Bummer about your DD's allergy.

I will say this, their burgers and fries are DELICIOUS!!!

Yes. They have buckets of peanuts for you to shell and eat while you're waiting for your order.

I found this on one peanut allergy website:
Some restaurants are riskier than others for peanut allergy sufferers. Many Asian cuisines use peanuts and should probably be avoided entirely. A concern at many restaurants is peanut oil. Refined peanut oil is generally considered safe; cold-pressed oil less so. Always check on frying oils. Because of the vast number of packaged foods prepared on the same lines as peanuts, and because of the possibility of cross-contamination, your safest bet is likely to go to a restaurant that makes virtually everything from scratch and that has significant experience with allergies, or one that has no peanuts on the premises.

I believe if they are using peanut oil to fry in, it's going to be refined peanut oil (which is safe) instead of cold-pressed (which is less safe and, from what I understand, very expensive). So eating there should be safe for your peanut allergic daughter, but check with her allergist or pediatrician just to be on the safe side. Or call the restearunt, ask them what kind of peanut oil they use and whether other peanut products are made/handled on site (such as cookies, etc). :)

HTH.

They are very good, I was in Philly for work a few months ago and stopped into one. They have open 1 or 2 around Indy recently but haven't made it to one yet.

As for Red Robin and how they compare....in my opinion, Red Robin is more of a sit down place to eat. The 5 guys place in downtown philly was more carry out from what I saw although there were plenty of places to eat. They also get your food ready a lot quicker at 5 guys. I like the burgers at both, but would take the fries from 5 guys over Red Robins.

There are just some restaurants that people with a peanut allegy have to avoid, as the peanuts are what make the food so good. Your DD should never go into a Thai restaurant, either, because of all of the peanuts used.

OMG!! I had no idea. Thank you so much. :worship: I hate to go somewhere like that and have to dissapoint her by leaving in a mad dash.

Thanks for that info. I'm thinking that given how busy RR is all the time, 5 Guys is going to get a lot of people who don't want to wait for RR. And since I work PT at Patriot Place and don't have time to wait for an RR burger on my break, I may end up at 5 Guys every once in a while.

Not to mention a 5 guys just opened down Rt. 1 in Dedham.

Yeah, I saw that too. The only 2 in the state and they're practically in the same neighborhood. The one at PP works for me though since I work over there part-time and I just don't get a long enough break to actually eat at RR. I just wish they'd put something in the south side of PP since it's not exactly easy to walk from those stores up to the north retail side for lunch when you've only got 30 minutes.

Do NOT take her there! In addition to the peanut oil they cook with, they have large boxes of open peanuts for people to shell and eat while they're waiting/eating there. There are signs on the doors warning patrons about the use of peanuts and that they are not to remove the shelled peanuts from the facilities because of allergies. If they're warning you not to take them out, I wouldn't bring your DD in!

Plenty of places to eat in the Chicagoland area, skipping one shouldn't be a problem

Hey OP, count us with you. We'd have to skip that place too. We have a couple of places around here that use peanut oil that we don't eat in. Of course the peanuts on the floor would definitely be a deal breaker.

There's a burger restaurant in San Diego called "Cheeburger Cheeburger" (a franchise I think). They fry all their stuff in peanut oil also. My DD7 is peanut allergic, so no dice with them. It's an interesting decision to use peanut oil knowing that they've shut out a reasonable number of customers. Does peanut oil make fries taste better? Dunno. :confused3

Five Guys has peanuts on every table. I'd avoid it if there are allergies.

Like I said earlier, I had no idea that this was a peanut on the floor type of place. :goodvibes
