after all, i wouldn't want to waste the ice cream if the freezer power is out...better eat it, right?

That was certainly our theory during the hurricanes last year. The kids loved being able to have ice cream, etc for breakfast.

Tell them that I'll buy them ice cream for breakfast if it will keep the hurricanes away. I'd consider it a wise investment.

I let them eat ice cream for breakfast again if I thought it would keep the hurricanes away. June so far has "felt" like pre-hurricane time with all of the rain we have had. This rain needs to go where they need it, not here.

I'm too late this morning for the "somber" conversation....but decided to share. Jay's mom and dad both have/had rather large portfolios...but neither ever enjoyed their "Golden Years".......in fact, I don't think they ever enjoyed life at all. Never took the kids anywhere, not even to the library. I'm not just talking expensive trips.
Then we watched Jay's dad pass on, having lived an unhappy and miserable life.
Since Jay & I are "older" parents, we agreed long before the kids came along that I would basically (I do work somtimes) stay home with the kids, and that we would DO things with them....or, include them in our lives. It's only occasionally that we go without them.....including having dinner out. I know that my parents, and many others, think that we spoil the kids......and maybe we do. But, we prefer to think of it as sharing our time and lives with them.

Hi all - checking in at lunch.

Stacey - I just sent you an e-mail. :)

Even through my mom passed at a young age (68) I'm glad that she got to enjoy her vacations that she took. She loved Disney and would have loved DCL.

To add to our "somber fluff". I took Alicia with me this last Sunday on the weekly trek to get my father, make sure he is alright, feed him and then take him to see mom at the convalescence home. He wasn't doing real well and wasn't as mobile as he could have been.

Anyway, on our way from the house after dropping dad off again, Alicia turns to be and said: "I guess that's what I'm going to do with you and mom one of these days, huh?"

Yes, I say! Kind of depressing isn't? Just part of growing up dear!! She nods understandingly.......

I know that story. As it turns out, our kid is much less spoiled than certain others we know that don't take the trips we do. Of course, she thinks she will go on traveling like this all her life. We've tried to explain that if she achieves her goal of being a dolphin trainer, this isn't necessarily so.

Mary, my Mom died fairly young too (57). But she did get to do quite a bit of travel, after we grew up. UK, France, Italy, Egypt, a couple of cruises. She loved it. I guess I'm more like my Dad, since Mom died, he's stuck to the US.

Sweet, but let's avoid that, OK?

I think our kids learned an awful lot those years that we were taking care of Jay's dad. Jordan claims that she "Will NEVER change my diapers!" but I think she learned compassion.

I wanted to clarify something before I accidentally started the old "Working Mom/At Home Mom" debate. The years that the kids were babies....I stayed home with them because that WAS my job. But, we had to do without a lot of things. We were lucky that we found our house right after we were married, the owners carried the loan for us, and we've been here ever since. We didn't eat out, once every few years (if the kids were old enough, and we didn't have a new baby) we went to Disneyland....but mostly, we went camping for enjoyment. Used a bucket for a toidy.
And I hope that we have also taught the kids that even though we are comfortable now, it wasn't always that way, it when they get out on their own, they'll have to start at the bottom like we did. They already see that with Megan and Pete, so that helps.

:3dglasses I like your life's philosophy!

Back to an earlier subject, I just had to tell the kid that she isn't going to the Lake with her friend this weekend. I blamed her commitments, and I did mention that we weren't too thrilled about the weekend they picked. She called her friend in tears, and was giggling by the time she hung up. Then she took this picture, and had me send it to her friend:

Does anyone else think this girl needs a job?

Thanks for once again reminding me of my camping aversion.

But you are absolutely right... I spent my high school years caring for my grandfather who lived with us... we thought it was a lot of work at the time, (which is was... no doubt about it), but it was great to have those last 5 years with him. His body was frail, but his mind was crystal clear- he was great company when he wasn't being a pain-in-the-butt.

Oh that's just tooooo funny! Alicia is a clever one, but I love the "Thumbelina"!!:rotfl: :rotfl2:

And now to song - "the song" :rotfl:

Thumbelina, Thumbelina, tiny little thing
Thumbelina dance, Thumbelina sing,
Thumbelina, what's the difference if you're very small?
When your heart is full of love, you're nine feet tall!

So you're no bigger than my thumb, than my thumb, than my thumb;
Sweet Thumbelina don't be glum.
Now, now, now, ah, ah, ah, come, come, come!

Thumbelina, Thumbelina, tiny little thing
Thumbelina dance, Thumbelina sing,
Thumbelina, what's the difference if you're very small?
When your heart is full of love, you're nine feet tall!

So you're no bigger than my toe, than my toe, than my toe,
Sweet Thumbelina keep that glow;
And you'll grow, and you'll grow, and you'll grow.

Thumbelina, Thumbelina, tiny little thing
Thumbelina dance, Thumbelina sing,
Thumbelina, what's the difference if you're very small?
When your heart is full of love, you're nine feet tall!

I was a working at the office Mom until Alicia was in 5th grade. Unfortunately, but fortunately in other ways, I started working from home that year for health reasons. And what a blessing that has been! She has friends that aren't supervised after school, and by this year (8th grade), they have started getting into all sorts of trouble. It's a luxury to be able to pick your kids up after school, but it seems to be an important one.
