Have to admit, at first I thought maybe kidney trouble....but no other signs of that. And after last night's spasms, I'm certain (I guess) that I must have twisted something. Might go to the doctor for muscle relaxers...can't go to a chiro, too risky for me.

Here is a question, I am being pressured into going digital......I have done some on-line looking and took a few of the questionaires on types of cameras....(came out the same one twice)....

Suggestions from our digital friends so I can be even more confused.

All I want is a chart - you know - a chart - that translates the film lenses to digital lenses. I can find articles, I can find bits of info, but I want a chart. After that, the same thing on f stops....but can I find it - noo......

For all of the Digital Nikons, the conversion factor is 1.5x. So here is a quick chart!

35mm Lens Effective length on Digital
24mm 36mm
35mm 53mm
50mm 75mm
80mm 120mm
120mm 180mm
150mm 225mm
200mm 300mm

So to be clear if you put a 50mm on a digital camera then it will appear the same as if you had used a 75mm on your film camera. The conversion makes the lens appear to be longer. f/stops are exactly the same and most digital camera can take decent pictures up to an iso equivalent to 1600.

I believe the Sony DSLR is also 1.5x and the Canons range from 1.5x to 1.3x up to full frame 35mm ($$$). Both Kevin and I shoot with the D200 which is considered a Prosumer (High end consumer, low end professional camera).

Let us know your budget and we can set you up. You would also need a new housing if you plan to take in under with you!

I think I shall leave the underwater to Sam, all I need to do is to find a better way to communicate with him, what I am pointing out for him to take underwater. My time spent now, is better on learning technique, you know, breathe in - out...

I shot film - landscapes, do not like point and shoot film, and cannot stand point and shoot digital, so yes SLR are $$$$......Presently Minolta - and favourite lenses are 28 (f 1.8) and 75 (same f stop).....Have never aclimated to zoom lenses, but oh well. So, as a starter, I would look for a lense to inlcude a 28-75...f 1.8 but I cannot seem to find this....f stops are much higher???? But I thought they took pictures in low light....????

I took a test...twice with 2 different website. It came back both times Cannon Rebel....(no funny comments, please)...

We have a Canon Rebel....is it XT or XR or something like that. Don't quote me. Takes GREAT pictures. Had to get it serviced b/c dust gets into the inside of it and shows up on pictures. Liked it for it's great pictures, but did not like the "lugging around" factor. Missed lots of shots b/c sometimes we just wouldn't take the camera around b/c it was a pain to lug around. We didn't really play with the settings much, so for us it was basically a point and shoot.

Recently we bought a Canon G7......love this one better. Still takes great pictures but is much smaller so easier to tote around. No removable parts so far less likely that dust will get into places it doesn't belong. It is officially a point and shoot, but that doesn't bother us at all.

The digital cameras can use any lens that a 35mm also uses. You can get the fast primes (non-zooms). I have the f/1.8 50mm that sells for about $100. Nikon has a f/1.4 50mm for ~$275. Just go to www.bhphotovideo.com. (Don't forget to look at both digital and nondigital lenses)
Most of the zoom lenses are a bit slower -- I have the 17-35 f/2.8 which is an outstanding lens (would work the same as a 25-55mm on your camera). It is a pro lens and is very expensive and VERY heavy. Kevin has the 18-200 f3.5-5.6.. Although it is slower it is a fantastic lens considering the range it covers.

Also be aware that there will be a learning curve switching from film to digital. You have been paying someone (film lab operator) to correct your images for color, exposure, etc. You will be able to do this for yourself in photoshop with digital. You can still take the unporcessed images to Walgreens, but your results may vary. I actually have found great results at my local grocery store!

Based on what I know about what you do if you wanted to go Nikon I would recomend either the D80 or the D200. To start with I would get the 35-80 AFS lens. A very sharp lens - not super fast, but is what I leave on the camera all the time. The other option would be the 18-200. The 12-24 f/4 is a great landscape lens.

I was looking for a small camera (luggable) last year before the 11 day cruise. Had my eye on a Nikon Coolpix, Kevin talked me into a Canon. I don't like it, it's a pain to download. He pointed out that I just got a built in card reader in my new computer, so it shouldn't be a pain anymore. Now I just have to find the camera and try it.

Dust is life with the DSLR. The best option is to learn to clean it yourself. There is a dry method and a wet method. i can do both. Look at the website: www.bythom.com.

My favorite site for overall review is: www.dpreview.com. Your best bet will be to go to a camera store and hold each of the cameras. See which one fits your hand best. Play with the menus to see which makes the most sense to you. The Canon, Sony and Nikon cameras are all very good. I would stretch yourself a bit on the purchase -- based on your use I would expect you to NOT be happy with an entry level camera.

That being said I am very happy with the Nikon system. The general characterizations that you see on the net are that Nikon has the best ergodynamics, Canon has an edge in high iso areas. Canon's default settings produce a more vibrant image -- Nikon's are more neutral (actually more accurate, but not as pleasing -- Also you can change the settings to get more "pop")

If you stay away from the kit lenses and stick with the prosumer and better, there is not much difference in glass between Canon and Nikon.

At the end of the day it is a tool all of the braqnds produce decent images. It is more about "feel" and you need to find which one is most comfortable for you. Don't get caught in the megapixel race. Unless you are routinely printing 11x17 and higher 8 MP is fine!

This has not been a good week for us either. My aunt who has been suffering from brain cancer passed away on Sunday. She is finally without suffering. It had gotten really bad, and she had to have 24 hour attention. I wish I could go, but it is impossible to get away and get out to California this week.

On Sunday night I found out that a friend's 13 yo son died in a skiing accident. It is so tragic. The funeral is tomorrow and I am dreading going. I know I will be in tears the whole time. I feel so bad for the family.

I hope everyone else has better weeks.

Have you looked at the Konica Minolta 7d or 5d? Unless Minolta has changed the mount any lens that works on 35mm will work on digital -- it is the reverse that does not hold true. Some lenses that are designed for the smaller frame digital cameras will not cover a full 35mm film size. I do not know much about Minolta -- are your lenses manual or autofocus? Do you know what mount you are using? (What is your current camera?) Look in the Konica Minolta section of the dpreview forums.

Actually it looks like both the Sony and the Konica will take the older lenses. If they are manual then you need a converter....

The Sony camera is the basically the same sensor that is used in the Nikons (D80 and D200 -- Sony makes the sensors for Nikon, but Nikon's version have additional features)
