Just got back from our recent trip and overall had a great time!! So many great tips from the board made things go even smoother- this was my first trip back to DL in decades and a first for hubby and our two daughters (8, 10).

Our flights/travel went smoothly which is nice. We did a flat rate Yellow Cab out of Long Beach to The Grand Californian, $47 (actually less) plus tip. Easy to catch the ride and got a discount using the app.

Overall we were very happy with the hotel- I was there for a conference, so wouldn't have otherwise chosen such an expensive place, but it was very convenient. Hubby was impressed with the lobby/decor. Our room wasn't anything special, but what I'd expect for a hotel. The service was all fantastic, and while we typically opt out of housekeeping, we had a middle of the night vomiting incident that required a call and some cleaning/linens at midnight and they were so helpful. The convenience of location and DCA entrance were a major plus for the hotel. I had booked DLR as our first resort 3 of our 4 park days, but ended up changing it to DCA the night before 2 of those nights since I would be at meetings and it was easier for the rest of the fam to just go scan in and go back to the room. (our early entry plans didn't pan out like I had planned)

Arrival day:
We were at the hotel by about 11, I had done the online check in, so we didn't really need to stop at the desk, but I didn't know that. So we stopped and they got us a pool card. We were starving, so we went to the Craftsman Grill for lunch... It was just okay and VERY expensive... I was shocked by the bill, in part since it was our first disney pricing, but it was also a little extreme IMO. Fountain soda was 5.75, not included with the kids meal. The kids meal was $10 and was a tiny slider burger. My 8 yo was not impressed. We also got the nachos to share, and since we ordered the meat on the side (kids were being whiny/disagreeing on the meat) they forgot some of the other toppings. Taste wise it was fine and we were all hungry, so it worked, but not worth the price.

Our room was ready by the time we were done eating, so we went up and got settled. the kids wanted to swim, though the weather this week was quite cold 60-70 every day and cloudy. That didn't stop the swimming, but it was unexpected weather.

We had dinner reservations for Goofy's Kitchen that night, but weren't rushed anywhere. The dinner was good for a buffet. Lots of food choices, the kids even ate some fruits and vegetables. They did also get desserts on their first pass at the buffet, but hey, it's vacation. The carved meats were really good and I felt there was a nice variety of options. Too many dessert choices so we were all very full by the end. The walk through downtown disney between hotels was nice- we are a big Star Wars family, so the Star Wars outpost had lots of nice things to see/ plan for souvenirs. We went to bed early after a long travel day and with plans to rope drop for our 1 full day in the parks.

Thursday-
A grad night at DCA, but I don't think that made much difference in the crowds- they were similar our whole trip. We timed it right that they opened the back gate at DCA right where we were in line, so we made it to the turnstiles at DL before 7:30. We did detour to city hall to get printed tickets- the person at the gate was very unhelpful and I had to ask several times how to get printed tickets before she said city hall. I have our only smart phone, so using a phone to scan everything wouldn't work for us... and I wasn't buying more magic bands. I get wanting to go digital, but it's really inconvenient and you could see it slowing everything down checking into the parks and lightening lanes with having to find everything on people's phones. We were able to just scan our tickets and move on.

Anyway- we made it to space mountain for our rope drop ride- hubby just walked through, he doesn't do rollercoasters. But the kids and I had fun. After that there wasn't really time for anything else, so we headed across the park to wait to be let in near Frontierland. Indy was our next goal. It's my favorite ride and what I had been looking forward to the most in returning to DL.

They did announce at the rope that Rise was not opening with the parks. It was a mad dash, but we made it and didn't have to wait long to ride Indy. I was also able to start booking LL when the park opened, so we did our best to make use of that. Surprising, the rides were all running really well our first day, so no MEPs. After indy we were able to hit pirates and jungle cruise. We were also able to get on Smugglers run without much wait, had some blue milk and other park snacks while we waited for our next lightening lanes. I was able to set up Indy, space mountain, Guardians and incredicoaster as the day went on. Hopping was really easy, so we made good use of it. We snuck in Soarin and some time at the Redwood play area before the big rides at DCA. The 10 yo and I did RSR single rider while the others went back to the room for a bit, and then we returned to DL later for more lightening lanes and a few of the rides without LL. Overall waits for things like pirates and jungle cruise never got too long. Indy and space were probably the worst.
Lightening lanes mostly went fast, though we had an evening space mountain one that took forever- but the standby was up to 70 minutes and it was shortly before the grad night started, so I wonder if the timing was just bad to have a lot of people show up at once.
We managed to ride space 3 times that day, soarin, little mermaid, incredicoaster, guardians, jungle cruise twice (day and night) pirates twice, haunted mansion, nemo submarines. We also took the train all around the park at the end of the night which was cool.

For food, the mobile ordering was a huge help- though typing in the gift card number every time was a pain- but I like using the gift cards for food to help keep track of the spending. We mobile ordered Flo's V8 for lunch and had a close arrival time, later in the night we ordered Little Red Wagon Corn dogs, it was great since the line was really long and we didn't have to wait. After figuring that out on the first day, we used it a lot.

We did pretty much open to close that day, but hit all of the major rides we wanted to go on, so even if we'd only had one day, I would have been pretty satisfied. We have been on Rise at WDW, so didn't make a huge effort to ride it- We didn't pay for any ILL this trip, G+ was expensive enough.

Friday-
I had meetings from 7-12, but was able to get scanned in and get the family up and scanned in to DCA on my morning break. They played a little while at the redwood area, but then just went back to the room until my meetings were done. But, it gave us a couple hour lead to book some rides. I started us with incredicoaster and after 2 hours could book Indy, hoping either for it to go down and give us an MEP or just to ride it, since I love that ride. The modify feature is great- I was able to push back IC until the time we needed while still having the clock ticking for our next LL booking window.

Once we were in the parks we did Incredicoaster and then RSR single rider since the other 2 hadn't ridden it yet. It still moved pretty fast, though there was a few minute breakdown while we were in line. It resolved quickly, so that was good.

We had lunch reservations at Blue Bayou so didn't spend much time at DCA. We scanned into DL and hopped on the train to the first stop. We checked in a little early and requested a water side table, which was granted. My 10yo spent the first 10 minutes waiving at every boat until her arm got tired. We really enjoyed the BB. I had gumbo and the Monte Cristo- it was delicious. Hubby shared my plate, also ordered gumbo and the scallops appetizer. Both kids ordered the kids steak, but when we got their meals, there was a huge discrepancy in steak size- one seemed appropriate and the other was like a sliver of a steak. I usually don't like to complain, but when we pointed it out to the waiter, he mentioned that those cuts are always inconsistent and that they would take care of it (it looks like they cook a steak and then cut it in half to split between meals, but don't cut very evenly) they brought a full new plate with a normal sized piece of meat and additional sides, so the kids had a little more filling of a meal. We were very happy with the service we received and everything tasted great. I would definitely dine there again, but more for the lunch menu since the Monte Cristo isn't on the dinner menu. (Oddly, this meal was way less expensive than the meal at Craftsman on our first day...)

We went on pirates right after our meal and waved at our now empty table. We had an LL for Indy, but when we got there the ride was down... but after riding jungle cruise, it was back up and we now had an MEP that made it easier to make use of the remaining LL for the night. We did Indy and space mountain, buzz, hit the storybook canal boats and then rode BTMRR and Millenium falcon, haunted mansion, pirates, Indy again with the MEP and I think jungle cruise again on the way out of the parks.

Saturday- Morning started off the same with me going to my meeting and everyone else sleeping in. We got scanned into DCA during my break again, and I was going to set up some LL for the kids, but due to some signal problems, they ended up just going back to the room while I finished my meetings. Instead I booked a LL for Indy, sort of to fish for MEP, but also because we like the ride.

Once the meeting was finished, we walked through DCA and picked up Mac N Cheese cones from the Cozy cone- mobile order was again very helpful when looking at the lines to order. We ate as we walked over to DL, since it was well past park hopping time. We wanted to see the Lion King show, so that was a priority that afternoon after a quick ride on Pirates. The 10 yo was less thrilled with the Mac N Cheese, so ended up with a baked potato at the Lion King Show. The show was really well done and fun to watch. We had LL for Rodger Rabbit after that, which the kids haven't seen, but it was still a fun ride. We looked around toon town a little bit, but with the crowds there, we didn't stay long. The sun was actually out and it was hotter for a few hours, so the kids were more interested in the hotel pool than more rides. We went back to the hotel and swam for 1-2 hours and then had several LL lined up for when we went back to the parks. We hit haunted mansion, probably pirates again (we rode it almost every time we walked by since the line was usually short, especially if you go left!) we had another LL for Indy and also rode Mr. Toad (a new ride for us, and it was very wild and we had no idea what was going on) Pinocchio and then a immediate return LL for It's a Small World.
We realized a sweatshirt had been lost while we were in IASW, but thankfully it was waiting for us when we went back to Mr. Toad. We almost couldn't get back to the ride since they were shutting everything down for fireworks. We took that as a cue to get moving out of DL so we could get a late dinner before Pym's closed.
We had a colossal pretzel, kid and adult portions of the meatballs/pasta and a pymini. The food was all quite tasty, we had a lot of pretzel left though, since it's huge and we had other food to eat. The 10 yo and I hit incredicoaster with a final LL while the other 2 went back to the room. Unfortunately, we refilled our 8 year old's orange soda and she drank it all on the walk to the room, that coupled with eating so late and who knows what else left her with a tummy ache at bedtime and then a midnight round of vomiting.

That derailed my plans to rope drop DL with the kids before my meeting, so I again was able to change our park reservation to DCA so it was easier to scan in and go back to the room/my meeting the next morning.

Thankfully she felt much better in the morning and was able to start slow with some sips of water and crackers before we went to the parks around 12. We kept her away from the thrill rides until she couldn't resist BTMRR at the end of the night.

Sunday-
We started at DCA again, the 10yo and I went on Guardians with a LL, (most of these went pretty fast throughout our week, just one Space mountain LL our first night took forever) then we were able to do the Monster's Inc ride and put in some food orders for DLR to change parks. The kids and hubby really wanted to check out tom sawyer island/pirate's lair and we hadn't made it there yet all week, so it was the must do for the day. We stopped for Corn dogs at Little Red Wagon and got the Hummus and Veggies at Bengal BBQ for our sicky. It was actually really good and a nice portion for the price, I would definitely recommend for people looking for a little healthier snack in the parks. It was also in a nice container to take on the boat and eat over on the island. The kids had fun exploring and we were also able to meet Captain Jack Sparrow who was roaming around. We got some pictures and were impressed with the costume/makeup of the character, he did a great job in the role. After that we probably rode pirates again :P and then split up until our dining reservation at Oga's.

The 10 yo and I went single rider on Space mountain- it took a little while to get through, but the standby line was 70 minutes, so single rider was definitely worth it. We did see 2 ladies jump from the single rider into the normal line at that last bend before loading and were really annoyed, since line jumping makes me mad. We couldn't really do much but make passive aggressive comments to their backs since we were too far from staff and they hadn't cut us in line, but still... how rude. We didn't see much else blatant line cutting the rest of the trip, which was nice.
Hubby and the 8 yo rode Small World again while we were on space mountain and then we met up at the entrance to Galaxy's edge. We got seated a little early at Oga's pleasantly in a booth so we could sit down. We took advantage of the bigger food menu here compared to WDW and ordered the Five Blossom bread and that Batuu Wilds Bounty. Both were very tasty, though we could have used more bread with the cheese spread/meats in the Bounty. We got just one alcoholic drink and a few of the non-alcoholic ones so we could all share and try them. Everything tasted good and the drinks were different enough from each other to order a few. The waiter was very into character, with some secret rebel signals (we assume at least) and talking about where he lived and how he'd never left the planet etc. Overall it was really fun and our table wasn't crowded- just another group of 3 joined us partway through. I think we had more fun at this Oga's than last year at WDW.

We rode Smuggler's run afterward and the kids were able to get Rey's attention and a hand shake when we saw her walking around. We always seem to miss the characters, or catch them right as they are leaving for backstage. We are not getting any better at piloting the Millennium Falcon. We took in the atmosphere/shops a little bit and then moved on to more rides.

We hit BTMRR again- the 8 year old felt up to it, so she went on with us and thankfully continued to feel just fine. We went on Pirates one more time (it's a favorite in this family!) on our way to Indy, but....

Indy had been down pretty much the whole day, and we had been able to book an LL for around 7pm that night, but the ride never came back up, so it turned to an MEP. Unfortunately there wasn't much left for LL to pick from in either park by that time (or we had ridden them already). The youngest and hubby were ready to call it a night after that, so we walked through downtown disney to pick up a few souvenirs we had been looking at all week on the way back to the room.

The oldest also wanted to "close the park" since it was our last night. So she and I went back to DCA. We first rode incredicoaster with our MEPs- in the dark while world of color went- so that was pretty cool. Jack Jack's cookie stand was still open, and nice big sister decided we needed to get cookies for her little sister back in the room, so instead of riding Midway Mania like we had talked about, we got the cookies, ran back to our room at the Grand Californian to deliver warm cookies, and then were back into the parks. Since we had 2 MEPs that weren't going to be used, we borrowed my husband and youngest's tickets and used those to ride Guardians. We had a fun car and when you looked at the ride picture, everyone was doing something funny.

But, we weren't done yet. My daughter required ice cream, but with DCA closing we had to go back to DL. This was after fireworks, so thankfully some of the crowds had cleared out. We got way too big of ice creams and sat on the curb to eat them, watching the people walk by. I was ready to head home, but DD decided we needed to ride a couple more rides, since it was our last night. There were LL for haunted mansion left, so we headed for that ride, we had to detour to pirates since HM was closed temporarily when we got to it, but once we were off pirates it was open again and we could ride. We also had to ride Jungle Cruise one last time on our way out of the parks and had one of the funniest skippers we had all week, and a joke about the Temple of the Broken Ride, which was especially apt since Indy was down the entire day. It was a nice way to end our trip. We didn't quite close the parks, but were tired enough when we got back to our room.

According to my watch, the first day we walked over 13 miles and then averaged about 9 miles per day for the later start days. Lots of complaints about sore feet! we did use the vicks vapor rub with the foot massage at night, which seems to help.

Monday was a rest day/transfer day.
We had brunch reservations at Storytellers, which was a nice meal with some good food options. The kids mostly wanted mickey waffles and bacon, but I enjoyed the eggs benedict along with the waffles and fruit. The carved sirloin was also very good. It still felt like enough options and no one went hungry. The characters were a big disorganized in their paths, so we had to ask for Chip at the end... I think our waiter was wondering what was taking us so long, but for that price, we were going to see everyone! Chip, Dale, Mickey, Minnie and Pluto were making the rounds. We had a few last souvenirs to grab after that and then set up an Uber to the Garland in Hollywood. It went really smoothly and we had no trouble finding a ride, I was a little worried since it was a holiday, but it worked great. It was about $75 plus tip for an XL.

Once we checked into the hotel, we rode their Trolley to Universal City walk and had dinner at the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium. Really fun theming and the food was decent. The kids had big milkshakes, but didn't drink most of it. We did get to keep the cups though, so that was cool. The hotel had movies by the pool, so after dinner, we went back to the hotel and the kids watched Despicable Me from the pool while I sat in a lounge chair covered by towels to keep warm.

Tuesday-
Universal Studios day. We didn't pay for early entry, and really didn't plan on doing much with Super Nintendo World. I think it's cool, but it's just so small and crowded. We did get to the park right around opening and started in Hogsmeade. We rode both Harry Potter rides without much wait- we had express tickets, but didn't need to use them. We were also able to do Ollivander's without much wait, but another child was chosen, so it was less fun for the kids to just watch. We also tried a butter beer. It was good, but very sweet and we had trouble drinking the whole thing between the 4 of us. Hubby had developed cold symptoms the day before, so he wasn't super excited about anything at Universal. We did the Despicable me ride, but the line was going really slow- they were only loading two rows instead of the whole theater, so I think they were slowing it down on purpose? Or maybe didn't have enough staff? The kids wanted to play on the playground outside of the ride, so we did that for a little while. The kids were able to meet a minion before we went to the lower lot.

The kids and I rode mummy with our express passes, it was a fun ride, but the 8 yo didn't want to do it again. We then had an early lunch at the Isla Cafe- We spent more than we probably needed to and a lot of the turkey leg went to waste, but the burger and kids burger were good. We did the souvenir refillable soda cup so hubby had something to do while we rode rides without him. Optimus Prime was doing a meet, so the kids said hi to him before we rode the transformers ride. 10 yo rode it again by herself with dad's express pass. We walked through Super Nintendo Land, they didn't check our passes or seem to be monitoring for a virtual line or anything when we walked in, but it was CROWDED. We didn't spend more than 5-10 minutes looking around before getting out of there. We weren't going to wait for the ride or eat at the restaurant, so there wasn't much else to do without power up bands. The mini game lines were also really long. The sun came out a bit so the kids and I rode Jurassic Park.. in the back row so we didn't get wet. But the 10 yo wanted to go again and this time she picked the front row. While she rode I was able to get my JP souvenirs. She also rode mummy one more time with the extra express pass, my plan was to hop in single rider while she did the express, but single rider was closed ( I think it was too full) the attendant overheard me telling her where to meet after she was done and he let me go through with her instead, so that was nice! We then got stuck on the ride for a few minutes, right before the backwards part.

We went back up after that and shared a Big Pink donut- it's massive and so sweet!! But very yummy. We were able to get on the Studio tour quickly after that and enjoyed the ride. Lots of neat stuff to see and take pictures of and the kids liked the behind the scenes looks. The kids wanted to try the Simpson's ride, which was a mistake, since even with express it took more than 40 minutes to get through. Hubby headed back to the hotel before we went on it, since he was not feeling the greatest and didn't want to go on anymore rides. I really wanted to see the stunt show, so we had to run right there after the ride since it took so long. But it was worth it- the stunt show was a lot of fun. 10 yo sat a few rows away from us since she wanted to get wet... the water did not disappoint.
After the stunt show we went back to the Harry Potter area. There was no line for Ollivanders so we did that again and only a few other people joined us and no other kids, so they selected both of my daughters for the wand choosing. We didn't get the wands that "chose them" but it was still a fun experience. We rode the rides again with our express passes and then picked out the final souvenirs. One daughter ended up picking a wand, so then we had to try out the magic stops in Hogsmeade. They didn't all work super well, but it was still fun.

We had to get to the pick up spot at a certain time for our trolley, so once we finished the magic, it was time to go. The girls wanted to swim and watch another movie more than they wanted to go on more rides. They got to see the Princess Bride while they swam for the rest of the night.

Overall, I think Disney was more magical, but the Harry Potter stuff and theming of the Simpsons area were worth seeing. The Studio tour made it worthwhile as well, but there is definitely a lot more to do at DL and it just seemed more special. I don't know how to describe it...

We had a great trip, and no issues with the travel home, so that helps a lot too with the overall vacation feel. I would go to DLR again in a heartbeat, though hubby is not as fond of the flight (WDW is a little shorter travel time for us) but probably wouldn't care as much to revisit Universal Hollywood. Maybe Universal in Florida some day, but we wouldn't make a special trip to CA. DL rides also were a lot more comfortable overall. We're not small people, but also not fully fluffy and we had no rides at DL that felt a little tight, but most of the rides at Universal had formed seats that could get really uncomfortable if you are a person at all of size. The Mummy in particular has little wings on the lap bar that cut into my thighs so bad... even the Forbidden Journey ride was pretty narrow seats to fit into.

Let me know if there are any specific questions.. I know this was an epic and rambling trip report :P Please forgive any random typos.
