I am tossing around the idea of spending the 4th of july in williamsburg this year. has anybody been before? is it insane? my parents live about an hour away so doubt we will even stay there, probably just do a day trip. kids will be 9/7/7.

would love any tips/advice!

There is so much to see/do in Williamsburg that it would be hard to spend just a day there. I've never been there for the 4th of July, but as long as you have a plan of what you want to do then I imagine you'll be OK.

If you can stay 2 days or more, consider buying an annual pass instead of individual day tickets.

Do you mean Colonial Williamsburg or Busch Gardens? At 7 the kids might be a little too young for Colonial Williamsburg. A lot of kids find it boring unless they are really into history.

We went a few years back and it was a lot of fun. I think DS was 12, so he normally would have been bored with the regular 'museum' feel of it, but there is so much going on, between story tellers and demonstrations, plus the fireworks show. There was one day (we were there for 3) where they had a parade where they 'recruited' the younger visitors to join in a parade. He had a lot of fun. One day was spent at BG, but the other 2 were at CW. Only you can determine if your kids will be able to lget through it.

My parents took us there for July 4th when we were kids. We loved it. I remember it being crowded, but not bad at all. There was a lot to do and see - we ate at all the restaurants my folks wanted to and enjoyed ourselves a great deal. That's one of the things I want to do with my kids - go there for the 4th of July holiday. Now you have me thinking about a trip there this summer! :goodvibes

This is all interesting to me. I just moved to Williamsburg about 3months ago and eager to find out about what is going here at home.

If you haven't been to Pierce's BBQ place yet, please give it a try sometime!

My dh lived in VA many years ago (before we were married) and frequented the Williamsburg area. We've been several times together, though only once with the kids in 2004. We're planning a trip there this spring. We found a good hotel deal and will be there 2-3 days, so we're getting the annual passes and plan to return next again spring before they expire. Both of our kids like history, and ds is a major history buff. We're looking forward to the trip! :goodvibes

sorry, yes I do mean colonial williamsburg. and dh and I have been many times before, the kids have been once, just never on the 4th of july. my kids loved it there and are good about museums both indoor and outdoor (parents are history nerds). I guess since we've always gone in spring/fall, I am wondering about specific tips for summer/4th of july. I assume its very hot and more crowded than when we have gone in the past. am especially very curious about just HOW crowded.

Do the Palace Picnic!! It's a little pricey (I want to say $75 a head, probably less for the kids), but worth every penny. We were there last 4th of July (actually for several weeks on either side as well, it was a research trip). It will be hot and crowded, but not as bad as WDW in the summer. There are special events the whole week, so try to spend at least a couple of days.

You don't say how long you'll be there, but if you'll arrive in time, "Under the Redcoat" is the last weekend in June. It's a three-day reenactment of the British army occupation, with reenactors from around the country. They march in and declare martial law, then spend the weekend camping in tents on the Palace Green. They interact HEAVILY with both the regular reenactors and the tourists, and it adds a whole new dimension to the experience.

*Hint* After the official "march in," around 6 pm after the daytime stuff ends, they bring their cars around to unload everything. It's kind of fun to watch the juxtaposition of modern and Colonial times.

We actually crashed the cast party this year! It's on Saturday night of the Redcoat weekend, starting around 11 pm at the garden cafe behind Chowning's Tavern. We had gotten to know some of the regular cast, being in town for so long, but we didn't know about the party. We took a late ghost tour, then went to Chowning's for a snack. That tavern's known for a bit of a "party" atmosphere late at night, so when we walked up, Dad jokingly asked "where's the party?" The girl at the door, who we sort-of knew, thought we were literally asking for the party! So she pointed us in the right direction and we ended up hanging out with the regular entertainment cast and the reenactors until, oh, 3:30 am or so. :rolleyes1 I wouldn't recommend taking the kids, though, it's rather rowdy party::drinking1 On the other hand, if you could leave the kids with your parents that night...

Anyway, the Palace Picnic...it's literally a picnic, with more food than you could possibly imagine, all packed into an individual box. Fried chicken, a huge sandwich, chips, fruit, dessert, fresh veggies, I can't even remember everything that was there. We had leftovers for two days! It takes place in the gardens of the Governor's Palace, with an hour of entertainment by the acting troupe. Then they hand out blankets and lead you to a reserved area for the fireworks viewing. It was REAL nice not to have to fight the crowd, and the view was spectacular. If you want to do it, buy tickets early. We got ours two weeks ahead, and they were nearly sold out already.

Have fun! It's a wonderful time to be in Colonial Williamsburg!
