45 degrees-still winter coat weather?

I personally don't care for a heavy coat unless it is well below zero outside, even then I debate about just running to the car :headache: It's different if the kids are going to stand outside at a windy bus stop for 30 minutes or so but to just go from house to car to school I wouldn't fight over the coat issue this time of the year.

It's sleeting outside right now and I'm going to stand outside at a funeral in a dress and open toed shoes, I brought a sweater and I will steal an umbrella from work to bring with me

It's in the low 50's here and I have my winter dress coat with me. But I'm cold natured anyway. Also, dress coats don't tend to be really warm either.

I would not be wearing an insulated coat in the 40's. But it would still be a coat and not just a jacket.

I wouldn't put them in something that heavy. Since my kids are still little, I get to decide what they wear, but as they get older, they get to suffer the consequences of their choices (within reason, of course).

As for myself - except for several times when I had to wear a jacket for social reasons, I generally only wore a flannel shirt over a T-shirt for my outdoor attire all winter. When it was snowing heavily, and I was using the snowblower, I would wear a hoodie, hat and gloves.

But then again, I am known for taking off my socks and walking barefoot (in the snow) out to get the mail, rather than go through the effort to find and put on my shoes.
