45 degrees-still winter coat weather?

60-70 and they wear fleece hoodies?! I'd be dying! @OP It probably depends on where you live. It was 65-70 here in Maine on Friday, and I don't think I saw anyone with a coat! Jeans and tees! )

LOL- yea would not be a happy person if I was wearing a fleece hoodie or any type of hoddie in 65-60 degree weather!!! How strange!
It was maybe just hitting 70 here on Saturday and I was at the park fishing with the kids and most were either in capris or shorts with no coats already!
As far as MAKING my daughter wear a clothes item when its cold- I leave it up to her. She pretty much learned years ago that it is no fun to stand at the bus stop and freeze. One day it was cold and she insisted on wearing a sweatshirt and no winter coat- no problem...I told her it was cold out and she may want to wear a winter coat but nooooooooooooo. So we are down at the bus stop and she is freezing. The next day she says "I am goign to wear my winter coat, its to cold out for a sweatshirt". Let them decide or they will never learn!
I still can't get past the hoodies in 70 Degrees :rotfl2::rotfl2: :sad2:

Another vote for pick your battles. DD never gets it right (IMO), but her choice. I swear she wears Uggs, and its 70's, or her new sandals, and it's 40 and raining. She wears a hoodie for anything over 30, and oh well, it's her choice. Really though--she is not outside for that long. 30 seconds to the car, 45 seconds to the school, and about 5 minutes off the bus to home in the afternoon, 2 evenings a week. Last week she got caught in major rain in flip flops and no coat. At least the next day she wore tennies:rotfl:

My 12yodd has been wearing a light jacket ALL WINTER to school.:rotfl:

It is just one of those battles that I don't fight. She is in middle school now and coat choices get to fall off the list of things to battle about.

Your kids can hang out and have a pity party with my kids who don't like my rules either;).

The rules in my house are all about the temperature, so I don't get much resistance. Under 60 is long sleeves and pants AND the winter coat. 60-70 is long everything but they can use their heavy fleece lined hoodies. Here it has to be above 70 to wear shorts or short sleeves WITH a thick seatshirt/hoodie on top because the mornings are 30 degrees cooler. Above 80 = no jacket necessary.

They still tell me what everyone else is doing but they don't really have any expectation of change so there is no whining. Tomorrow should be a good day for confusion since Friday it was 80 degrees here:headache:

good luck

OMG LUV ORLANDO!!!!:scared1: We would die of heatstroke with your rules.:rotfl:

You and my mom would get along really well! She always made me take at least a sweater with me when I left the house, even during in the heat waves of summer!

Once the snow melted, the kids got the shorts and flip flops out and so did I!

I would die of heat exhaustion if I had to wear a winter coat past 40 or so.

I am a bad judge about the whole coat issue so I let the kids decide what to wear. Of course they are older so I have to trust their judgement.

For 45, just a fleece coat should be fine. Although, I guess it depends where you live. I live in NH and ditch all coats when it finally hits 50 degrees. Unless it's snowing hard, I don't put on a winter coat until the windchill is below 30.

My DD has you beat. She won't wear her winter coat unless the wind chill is below zero. And even then if she can get her Dad to warm up her car for her, she'll still wear just a sweatshirt or fleece to school! She lucked out with a close parking spot so its a short dash into the building.

I am another who never really did the coat battle. If she wanted to be cold, I let her. When she started high school she said it was too much trouble to try to get to her locker in the morning and afternoon to drop off and pick up her coat. So she wouldn't wear it.

OP - 45 degrees is spring here in NH and we wouldn't wear winter coats. But it is probably a function of where you live. When we go to Florida, we see people wearing winter coats at 45 and think it is odd but have to remind ourselves that people in warmer areas than us probably have different internal thermostats. What is warm to us might be cold to them!

45 is short sleeve weather here ;)

We broke out the spring jackets once it was over 25' consistently. I don't own a winter jacket myself, but for my kids, they would MELT wearing a winter jacket at 45'!

OMG! Your poor kids!!!

That we are, I wore open-toed shoes on the first day of spring. I think the high was 40. :rotfl:

Me too - sandals AND capri's! And a bright colored shirt :) It's been a long winter and I was SO ready to shed my heavy clothes. Although, it's chilly and rainy today. So I wore a hoodie and pants (dark colors) to work.

I am surprised at how disrespectful so many of you are being.

I do not agree with your choices and feel just as strongly, but you don't see me trashing your way of doing things. Why not just say what YOU think without bringing me, my home or my kids into it?

I am not being disrespectful. You are confusing with the reality of my family. Literally my 12yo would pass out if she was that warm. She cannot wear long sleeves.
Her dad and her are hot blooded.

Sorry if you felt jumped on.

You have to love spring weather. This is DC this week.

Mon 57 and Rain
Tue 67 and Rain
Wed 58 and Partly Sun
Thur 65 and Mostly Sun
Fri 80 and Mostly Sun

I used to be more like that. However, now that I've got a 15 minute walk to classes (UNH), I tend to dress for the weather a bit better.

Funny, my DD was like that too. Now she goes to college in Syracuse -- she has changed her toon big time.

Same here, I'm always cold, but my girls are hot blooded especially the 16 year old. If the temp is above 60 she is wearing shorts to school. When they were little and we lived in Alaska I gave up the coat/sweatshirt/jacket battle when I noticed that the jacket that I sent them out in was sitting on the ground while they played. If they were cold they would come in and get what they needed, but no way was I going to fight over a coat.

Now, last year when we lived in North Dakota I did tell them on occasion to make sure they wore a coat, hat and gloves, but when the wind chill is 50 below it's dangerous not to wear those things!! They didn't mind me telling them on those occasions ether, it just saved them time checking the weather!

The kids at the bus stop were all wearing their spring coats. 45 for a high does mean that the morning is around 30 though, so a winter coat would probably be better than a fleece.

I already packed away my winter coat, but it's supposed to get back to the mid 40s this week. Oh well. ;)

No doubt...

Our kids wear an "in-between coat" when it's now in the low 50's and usually have long sleeves on. When it's been in the 60's they'v worn short sleeves and maybe a light jacket (if it's cool in the morning). By the time it hit 70 all coats are gone and it short sleeves and "maybe" shorts depending on what we're doing.

DD will be at UNH in the fall. Maybe next winter she'll give in and wear a coat. Or even boots if she has a 15 minute walk to classes.

Oh she'll wear a coat! I never really owned a good winter coat when I lived in Rhode Island, but my first winter in southern Maine came with rushing to the store for a heavy winter coat. The snowy days aren't bad, but in Feb/March the walk is accompanied by the WIND that burns your face. :)

I'm one of those people who is always cold. Last week when the temps were in the high 40s, I was still wearing a sweater AND my wool coat! Once it gets to be about 60, I can switch to a lighter weight jacket. 80 and I'll be able to ditch the sweater.

I also never use air conditioning...much too cold...

Everyone is different!

I agree~ it depends where you live, and how cold of a person you are.......
My DD9 left today with her spring cost on ( light nylon) and it was 38 when we left for school. I,on the other grabbed my big Columbia Jacket and when i stopped by by Dad this morning, he gave me a hard time for "Still" weating my Winter coat
in my defense, my "Spring" jacket is a fleece sweatshirt.
no one in my house wears a jacket / sweathsirt when it's warm enough outside, normally around 50

I can see where people from warmer climates are coming from, when you are used to a certain temp, when it drops, your body is cold if you are used to 85 and then is 60 - it's a shock to the body.
.....come on Fellow Midwesterners, you have to admit - you ARE cold in late october after it's not 75 during the day and below 50 at night right? I am :rolleyes1

My kid (12) would absolutely die if made to wear long sleeves, pants or anything more than a hoodie at anytime during the winter! Especially since they keep the school at "well done" temps.

The predicted high for today is 69. He just left for school in shorts, t-shirt and no sweatshirt/hoodie/coat. Morning temp was 48. I am even in capris and a t-shirt and I am always cold.

Of course, he has worn shorts and a t-shirt with a hoodie every day this winter except when visibly snowing. Then he throws on jeans with his t-shirt. The only time the jacket is on his body is when he is on the ski slopes.

His school is so hot and in middle school they don't go out for recess except for 10 minutes at lunch, so he dresses for the building, not the outside.

But boys seem to always be hot. Even during the coldest nights at Lacrosse or football practice, the boys are in their short sleeves jerseys and shorts . I have suggested throwing on the under armor before he leaves, but to no avail. (although I always have a hoodie in the car just in case. It has yet to be used).

Yesterday, it was in the mid to high 50's with a foot of snow on the grassy areas, although the paved areas were completely clear (gotta luv that Colorado sun). The boys were all out playing basketball in shorts and t-shirts. He is not a stupid boy. He knows his body and his comfort level. If he was cold, he would come in and get a hoodie.

And an overheated child is often more dangerous than a slightly chilled child, so I trust his judgment on most days. The only time I insist on outerwear is if there is a windchill that could be dangerous.

But I do have to agree that it is a function of where you live. I still remember a day on a Kauai beach when they were having a "cold snap" over Christmas. It was 70 degrees. There I was in my swimsuit on the beach because it felt like heaven, whereas all the natives were bundled up in ski jackets. It is all a function of what your body is used to.
