i saw my first one in the flesh( i've been avoiding it so as to not drive myself crazy) and was of course drooling even more than i am now( even though it's getting closer to buy time:) ).i didn't realize the custom settings were part of the dial, ( very cool) but then wondered what i would use them for...so what have you set yours for...

also love the live preview, thought that would be great for macro shots without having to crawl around on the ground:thumbsup2

is it bigger than the 30d? it looked enormous to me. i wanted to try the fast speed but it wasn't set up to work:headache:

I didn't know about the dial doing that. I haven't played with custom settings yet. Guess I better look at the book again. :coffee:

i dont setup any custom settings. im always either using full manual or av with it set to 5.6 and adjust the shutter speed to get the exposure i want. its a big camera and its no feather weight either! i got the kit with the 28-135 IS lens and also got the 70-200 L lens tossed in as well. the kit lens has been great so far its the perfect range for a carry around lens and the IS makes a huge difference.

i havent used the live view but im sure it would be great for tripod shots im just worried it would drain the battery pretty quickly having to keep the big 3 inch screen lit

janet I think it is the same size as the 30D. I checked it out briefly at the store the other day - and really eyed the 5D while doing so. ;)

Going from my XTi to the 30D it felt like a brick - but you get used to it.

After a while if I am shooting a lot the fingers on my right hand get pretty sore and stiff from holding it - but I just chalk it up to the price we pay for our art. :rotfl:

Now - with that said -imagine the 70-200 L lens on that thing. It is HEAVY! At least for me it is. - but like I said - worth it - for our "art". ;)

I find the 40D heavy too. I'm going to Hawaii in a few weeks and I told my DH maybe I will take the XTI. I will be taking it but I should have worked out with weights first. :yay:

Heavy? The 40D is a wee little thing. I got to play with a friend's D3 yesterday. Now that's a camera that shops at Lane Bryant.

The 40D and the 30D seem like they are the same weight. If there is any difference, it's not much at all!

I'm afraid I don't have a 40d, but one of my canon P&S cameras has a C1 and C2 on the dial which I assume are a similar concept. We use them for my DH's eBay photos (mostly glassware). He has an area setup in our basement with lighting and a table and has worked out over time what works best for him with a black background and a white background. C1 is set to one and C2 to the other so he doesn't always have to set it up each time. This includes all the settings for each including white balance.

I had sort of assumed these were "normal" on Canon cameras and was a little disappointed to find that my new XTi doesn't have them.
