Wow interesting stuff! I don't think there is any doubt that if you are definitely going to choose Disney as your vacation destination then the DVC is the way to go. My DW just can't let a year go by without her Disney fix. We started throwing in HHI to satisfy my need for more relaxing vacations. We have owned since 1994. Whew! We have been too many times to count ( but youguys have inspired us to figure this all out). One interesting thing about figuring our savings is that from 94-99 we got free tickets to the parks for the length of stay. Some incentive huh! We got free tickets up to half of the number the room held. So if we stayed in a studio we got two free length of stay tickets. Once we stayed in a Grand Villa with family members and we got 6 length of stay tickets. We did that another time and stayed in two studios and a 2 bedroom and we got 8 tickets for free. In 99 (the last year we had free tickets) we went 6 times.

I've been going back and forth about buying DVC so those calculations are very helpful. Are you comparing today's rack rate or do you a listing of what rack rate was for the years since 1999 when you purchased? And are you using rack rate for the actual season you traveled or an average.
(Sorry - I have a "math brain" and like to compare apples to apples)

We've been averaging 2x/year at a deluxe, so continuing that trend, we should be buing DVC yesterday. But I see this going down to 1x/year as my son gets older and it becomes more difficult to pull him out of school for off-peak times. I also anticipate working in the school system, which doubles the problem.

For most of our trips, the cost of airfare, tickets and dining has been the the bulk of the expense, even staying deluxe, and that won't really change with DVC, right? What am I missing?

So if we're only going to make it once a year, generally at a more crowded time (Spring Break, Presidents week or in the summer), it takes so many points I just can't see it happening for us. Unless I can use your numbers to convince my husband what a great deal it is!
I'm very interested in this answer as well. As my triplets get older, we won't pull them out of school. And we will need a 2bedroom so that they have plenty of space as teenagers. So peak season plus 2bdr, would it be worth it vs 2 resort rooms?

Only you can answer that question, but the answer does need to come from how often YOU want to travel to Disney, not your children. If you don't see yourself "doing Disney" annually or every other year after your children are grown, then a DVC purchase might not make sense for you. We purchased after our "kids" were grown. Remember that the life of the contract is UP TO 50 years, and you aren't going to have children that whole time.
