4 people killed on rapids ride at Dreamworld

It's morbid, but I suppose it's a technical phrase. Much better than describing in layman's terms what they saw.

Yes, I've read up on it in the last half day or so and apparently it is what is said/written in reports to explain why no attempt of resuscitation was made even though a doctor hadn't confirmed the deaths.

I've seen some suggesting that the rope on the border of the Dreamworld ride might have had something to do with it (might have gotten stuck in the conveyer belt or something) but I guess everything will be revealed soon. Those poor children. :sad1:

I asked a friend who is a doctor in Queensland about the statement. Apparently Ambulance officers cannot say that someone has died, and legally this needs to be the wording they use. She then explained the kinds of injuries the statement covers and I felt sick.

To add insult to all of this today there are stories in the paper that when the husband of one of the women ran to try and save her someone stole his wallet and phone etc from the baby's stroller (they had an 8 month old and he was with the baby rather than with his wife and daughter on the ride).

I felt sick, too. And I honestly cannot believe the nerve of some people... I hope the phone is recovered as there are no doubt some very cherished photos on there.

Right. I suppose the phrase is legalese when it's obvious that any medical intervention would be fruitless.

Edit: Looks like another poster confirms this.

The not compatible to living quote made me feel sick.

Here is an article that explains the type of injuries it includes. I'm not going to quote it, because it is just awful, but if you would like to know then the article explains. http://www.news.com.au/national/amb...e/news-story/8d090b77b4f942237839b488b6567637

They have now confirmed that there were 6 people on the ride - 2 men (who were partners), a woman (who was the sister of one of the men) with her 12 year old daughter (her husband and 8 month old baby were also in the park) and another woman from New Zealand with her 10 year old son (her husband and 6 year old daughter were on the boat behind). It is a miracle that the children survived. Apparently the boat collided with an empty boat in front and flipped over. The children and 2 of the victims were thrown from the boat while the other 2 victims were trapped. Truly horrible for the victims, their families, witnesses and the first responders.

Thankfully that rumour has been debunked as false by Qld Police. The same article also says that the father of one of the victims' found out via a news report. How awful. :(

The grieving father of one of the Dreamworld disaster victims has revealed he found out about the tragedy from a news report.

Behrooz Araghi's son Roozi was one of four killed at the Gold Coast theme park when a raft carrying the four adults and two children flipped on Thunder River Rapids ride.

Mr Araghi, who lives in Sydney, said his family learned of the tragedy via a news report.

"My son, my second son found out accidentally on the news. Wife saw the news, (she) went away," he told The Australian.

Earlier today, a TV news reporter had claimed the husband of Kate Goodchild, who died in the accident, had been robbed while trying to save her from the accident.

The allegation was that Ms Goodchild's husband's phone and wallet were stolen from their child's pram during the commotion of the crash.

But Queensland police this afternoon said that story was false.

"Suggestions of that incident have come to police but I am able to confirm that is incorrect and that hasn't happened," said Detective Inspector Mark Thompson.

Terrifying. There's nothing scarier than being reminded that ride technology isn't infallible, and you are taking a risk (a tiny, tiny, tiny calculated risk, probably less dangerous than crossing the street or blow drying your hair next to the sink) by riding.

I don't remember at the moment whether Disney's raft rides have this, but I have always felt that there should be ledges extending in a bit over the boats in those areas where they are not free-floating, such as any spot with a conveyor. The presence of ledges like that (even if they were stiff brush ledges) would probably prevent rollovers. Bottlenecks and slowdowns happen all the time on rides, and it's imperative to put in safeguards that prevent the rafts from turning over when it happens.

The conveyor machinery on that ride looks open, which seems bizarre to me. Not just for safety, but for operational maintenance; if some large object (such as a tree limb or a backpack) falls into it it can cause a malfunction. I'm not absolutely sure of this, but my memory tells me that the conveyors at WDW and USIOA are covered by a full belt surface.

I remember this happened at Six Flags when I was a kid. In that one the raft overturned and since everyone was strapped in they were held upside down in 4 feet of water. All but one person was able to unbuckle but the person who wasn't unfortunately drowned. My mom didn't let me on raft rides any more after that. Years later I ride them now but I imagine if my mom was alive she would be shaking her head at me.

Just heard them say on the news tonight that they released a statement saying they will re-open on Friday. Will be interesting to see what their visitor numbers are like.

There was a news report literally just seconds ago saying that the Friday memorial opening has been delayed for now,on the advice of police. The earliest it might (re)open is next week. I'm not sure if that's for general admittance, or only the memorial.

A few months ago when they had a fatality at Schlitterbahn KC it was reopened a few days later...numbers were not impacted and Schlitterbahn KC is far from being a finished park. A fatality at a theme/amusement park doesn't automatically equate to lower attendence when the park reopens (if it was closed due to the incident) even as unfortunate as that sounds.

Man I am getting over the coverage of this here, the media is on a real witch hunt and is dragging Dreamsorld through the mud over anything they can find, without any actual information about what caused the incident yet.
All the stories are about the Ardents bosses massive bonus, about the 18 year old on her "first day" operating the stop switch etc

It's getting beyond stupid. But mainstream media are a bunch of numpties so kind of expected.
