4 days to Orlando, IOA/Universal questions/help

Ok, so l'm leaving for Orlando on January 4th. While there will be Disney to be had my wife and I (no children) are going to go to Islands of Adventure, primarily because Harry Potter is there, but we'll happily do everything else. This will be the first/only time going too, so I'd like to not miss anything, however I don't know what there is to miss!

Question 1: Which day to go?
Thursday January 5
Friday January 6
Saturday January 7
Which of these days would be the most crowd free, I know due to where NY lies in the week some schools might have the first week off still, thought I'd use the Disney crowd numbers as an indication of crowd levels which would be Fri/Sat, but their operating hours are longer on those days too which usually is a sign of more crowds. Any advice here would be helpful.

Question 2: What sort of touring plan should I go in with?
Going to REALLY try to be there for "rope drop", but with a 3 hour time difference it might be hard to get there at 9am (6am my time!). However as mentioned I don't know what any headline attractions I should aim for, nor the crowd levels for which day I'll be going. No fastpass strategy obviously, but which rides do I need to make a beeline for first?

Question 3: Is there a cheaper/easier way to go to the park other than driving, for 2 adults?
$15 to park for a day, we will have a rental car, but do they have a local bus system that's affordable/useful? Our resort (World Mark) is on International Dr, just south of Seaworld. I know in Anaheim they have a resort transit system, that costs like $4pp but not sure if there's an equivalent thing in Orlando.

Question 4: Is Universal Studios worth a $30 upgrade charge for 1 more day (+parking/transportation related fees)
Looking at a list of what's at the other park, it doesn't seem like there's much going on over there. Very similar to the original Universal Studios (in California) in that there are shows/attractions, but not many rides at all. Apparently if I buy another day ticket it will cost another $30, and we have 3 days to fill anyways, just wondering if its actually worth the additional cost. Also since this is an online only deal (according to their website), it seems like something I'd have to decide now (as the extra day is $20 off the regular price), instead of doing a ticket upgrade at the park (assuming they even do that)

Question 5: Are there any shows/parades/etc that have limited days of operation?
Basically anything like the MSEP or Fantasmic or what not that is showing there? Doesn't even need to be of that caliber either, I'm just finding it really hard to find any information on the subject at all.

Question 6: Not exactly Universal (or Orlando) but is the Space Center worth it?
Since I'll have 3 days of non-disney fun, wondering if the KSC is actually worth it. I was shocked to find out it cost $43 per person, guess the gov't needs revenue!, wondering if a few iMax shows and some history is really worth it? If not, what else can I do to fill the day without driving terribly far. I know its a little too north (and cold) to go snorkling to see fish & stuff, but is there anything that's worth doing? Assuming we're not trying to adjust to the humidity and are stuck in our room with massive sinus headaches (this happened the last time I was in Floriday, summer time though)

Thanks for any info you can give :)

#3
don't know your hotel but call and see if they provide free shuttles to the park.

#4
i don't think to upgrade it will be another $30 per ticket.
check the UO website for the multi day ticket costs

The attractions you should make a beeline for are Ollivander's Wand Experience and then Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey :) If you don't get a short wait in the morning, check back at the end of the night when lines are generally shorter.

$85 for 1 day 1 park
$115 for 2 day 1 park per day

Unless my math is fuzzy, that's $30 more.

since you looked it, i'm sure you are correct.

i thought you were interested in adding a 3rd day to the passes based on #6 stating you have 3 days.

that is what i was thinking of. i misunderstood you.
sorry.

Oh no problem, and no need to apologize.

My original plan was to do a manatee swim tour on one of those days, unfortunately they didn't have any spots for it then and it got bumped to the next week, so I lose a day at Disney :( but my wife is nutso about them so she's happy we're going to actually swim with them.

Question 1: Which day to go?
Thursday January 5
Friday January 6
Saturday January 7
I would say Thursday but I would wait for experts to chime in. I'm with you in that I always assume that all themeparks are busier on the weekend.

Question 2: What sort of touring plan should I go in with?
I would still try for rope drop but if you can't make it I'm told that crowds should simmer down in the next week. I would definitely go to WWoHP first and see Ollivanders if there is an interest and ride Forbidden Journey. Then ride Spiderman and Hulk and the rest should be easy after that. If you also decide to tour the Studios try to ride Rip Ride Rockit and the Mummy early. Disaster has also been giving us fits with silly long lines in the middle of the day. If Jaws is still open be sure to ride since it will be gone soon.

Question 3: Is there a cheaper/easier way to go to the park other than driving, for 2 adults?
There is a bus service in that area called Lynx if I'm not mistaken but I don't know how easy or hard it is to use. We've stayed on International Drive and I just take our car for simplicity.

Question 4: Is Universal Studios worth a $30 upgrade charge for 1 more day (+parking/transportation related fees)
Rides at the Studios include the Mummy, Rip Ride Rockit, Disaster, Jaws, ET, Men in Black, the Simpsons (OK, a simulator). There is Twister (you can miss this one) and Shrek plus the Terminator which is a special favorite of ours. Personally I'd go to both parks.

Question 5: Are there any shows/parades/etc that have limited days of operation?
There are very few extra shows at Universal particularly during that time of year. It has a lot to do with the area that they're located in.

Question 6: Not exactly Universal (or Orlando) but is the Space Center worth it?
If you're interested in space it is very worth it. We checked it out years ago and it is quite nice. We also spent some time at the beach on that day too but only because we spent several hours at the space center and we wanted to relax before the drive back.

first week in jan 2011 had large crowds.

i am guessing there will be crowds again this coming week from what i have read about the UO parks so far.

i have no idea which dates that you have listed will have the lowest crowds.

with the castle tours for FJ starting at 4 pm for the time period you are considering ioa, i suspect that part of ioa will be more crowded than the rest of the month.

your best bet is to go early before the parks are opened to the general public and head towards potterville.

Thanks for the advise all. Seems that the whole week is "moderate" crowds, no actual numerical values, but good enough, I'll try Thursday maybe Friday if I can't get out of bed :D

There is a separate tour? Hmm did not know this
