4 Days Of Wonder: Family of Five's 1st Disney Cruise

Just south of Greenville in Simpsonville. Where are you in GA? We go to Commerce pretty regularly. There's a few stores down there we have to get our fix of every now and then.

You pass right by us to get to Commerce! We're in Lavonia, the last town in GA on I-85. You may have noticed some billboards for a "cafe" at our exit on your way back home. The billboards and the "cafe" are gone now though!
We love to shop in Greenville - it's a great town! I do a lot of business with a printing company called Martin Printing in Easley, also.
Small world!

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 – Nassau
We didn’t book any excursions for Nassau since we wanted more time on the ship (and on a budget). We headed to the pools after a light breakfast (we learned our lesson the day before). We had the Goofy Pool all to ourselves for a while and they got their fill of the Mickey Slide. We did want to take the kids shopping at the straw market just so they could see a different country so we got off the ship after lunch. When DH & I took a cruise last year (without kids), we did a “Rum Boat” excursion and then did some shopping in Nassau. Well, being slightly inebriated and childless, we didn’t really see how bad Nassau was. This time, we were completely sober and had our babies with us and found out that it is one scary place –especially the straw market! It was horrible – the constant bombardment of solicitation from vendors, hair braiders, and taxi drivers. There were groups of men drinking from bottles in brown paper bags on the side of the street. We didn’t even make it to the sidewalk before DD14 started asking to go back to the ship followed shortly by DS5. DD10 wanted to go to the Del Sol shop, but then she was ready to head back. We weren’t off the boat for 30 minutes. DH said he was sure none of our children were going to grow up to do missionary work!
DD10 and DS5 were anxious to get to their clubs so DH, DD14 and I went to the movie theater to see Swing Vote. We were sitting on the far left of the theater and during the movie the exit door opened and Goofy snuck up the stairs. A little while later Chip & Dale did the same thing – all the time they stayed in character. After a while Chip and Dale came back through and left through the same exit. Then Goofy crept back in and tiptoed down the stairs. DH laughed out loud and Goofy turned around and shushed him! It was hilarious. The movie was really good, but I missed the ending because DD10 paged us to pick her up before her group went to dinner.
This was our Pirate Night so we all got ready – DH in his Pirate of the Caribbean T-shirt, me in my light up pirate shirt, DD10 in a pirate wench Halloween costume, DS5 in his pirate costume and DD14 went all out with a Pirate of the Caribbean necklace. We found Jack Sparrow in front of the Walt Disney Theatre without a line. The lines for other characters became long pretty quickly so we never waited. We caught the show again – it was the comedian we’d already seen but this time it was a show for the whole family. There were a couple of funny parts. It must be hard to be the show sandwiched between Toy Story and Disney Dreams so I guess he did as good as anyone could. After that show we caught the A Pirates Life For Me Show. It was cute and DD10 & DS5 got to go up and throw coins into a bucket. Our pirate dinner was at Animators Palate again. It was great as was all of our dinners. DS5 was terrified the “Vegetable Pirate” (aka head server) was going to make him walk the plank for not eating his broccoli. He kept his eye out for him the rest of the time we were onboard. We skipped dessert because we were full but also wanted to try out the buffet later at the Pirates IN the Caribbean party. They had some good music and special effects at the party but it was too crowded and DD10 & DS5 wanted to sit down so we left right after the fireworks (another really cool Disney touch) and didn’t go through the buffet. Shortly after we got to bed we heard it thunder really loud and it started pouring down rain so we were thankful we didn’t stay for the buffet and felt bad for all the people up there. Everett, our assistant server, was working the buffet and he told us he was soaked when he left.

The Goofy Pool all to ourselves!

More to come - Castawy Cay!!!!:beach:

What a great review. We are going on the 4 day in April and I really wanted to get an idea on how different the Wonder was from the Magic. It seems as though there is no difference at all except for the length of the cruise. Keep up the review it is great!!

Hi! I just found your TR and you are doing a great job! You are have a beautiful family. We are going on our first trip on the wonder in April. Keep writing, I look forward to hearing about Castaway Cay!

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 – Castaway Cay
I think above all else, I personally was looking most forward to our day at Castaway Cay. I spent the last few weeks before our cruise obsessing about the weather and checking the National Hurricane Center several times a day, but all the worry was for nothing because we woke up to beautiful weather Wednesday and got to see the sun rise from our veranda as we were pulling into Castaway Cay. We ate a quick breakfast – DH & I ran up to the BBB and used the “secret aft stairwell” coming back. We didn’t realize that these stairs led you straight into the back of the buffet without having to go through the main line. This would have come in handy for running up to get chocolate milk. I’m not sure what the benefits of being in the forward part of the ship are, but we found being in the aft very convenient to the drink station, buffet, and pizza! I would definitely recommend booking an aft room. We were off the ship before 9:00 a.m. There was someone handing out towels when we got off the ship. I let my husband get five for us and I got five as well so we could have extra. We walked instead of taking the tram and stopped at the post office to mail our post cards (which still haven’t arrived) and didn’t have to wait at all. There are several nice photo ops to get if you walk instead of taking the tram also. We walked to the far end of the family beach (a tip learned from the Disboards!) and got a couple of lounge chairs and a hammock. That end of the beach never did fill up and it was close to the restrooms so I thought it was a great place. We rented a couple of floats that are $6 each. We first got the round intertubes, but found they were to big for DS5 and even DD10, so we traded them in for the blue mat-type floats. They didn’t seem to have a problem with us trading them in and we found they worked much better as both DS5 & I could use one at the same time. We played in the water for a while and then DD10 wanted to check into the club for a scavenger hunt. DH, DD14, DS5, and I rented bikes. It was an easy ride, but we were all pretty tired at the end. I’m glad we did the bike ride, but it seemed to take up too much of my beach time so next time (IF there’s a next time) I’ll let DH & DD14 go without me. After our ride, we ate lunch. I got a hot dog AND the chicken. (I figured I bicycled off enough calories to justify it.) The chicken was great! And the chocolate chip cookies on the island were warm, soft & gooey! DD14 got the ribs and really enjoyed them. DH got the hamburger and wasn’t very impressed. We were all too stuffed to try the ice cream, but DH & I left room for a Konch Kooler we heard so much about, but we both agreed we prefer Pina Coladas so we had to try one of those too! By this time they were 2-for-1; probably the best deal we got on the whole cruise! They were too filling though. After lunch, we got DD10 from her club and sent DS5 to his so he could have a chance to dig in the whale bones. We played in the water while DD14 hung out in the hammock and read (she doesn’t care for the beach – I just don’t get it!). I took DD10 to the play area in the water. It’s for kids under 14, but the water is 8-9 feet deep there so I didn’t think DS5 was a strong enough swimmer for that. By the time DH got DS5 back from the club, the girls were ready to go so DH walked them back to the ship while I stayed with DS5, but by the time he got back it looked like rain so we all headed back to the ship by 3:00. After we all showered and changed, we took the kids to the “graduation” (aka free t-shirt!!!). There wasn’t that many people there so we sat way up front. We liked those seats and decided to get to the show (Disney Dreams) early so we could get good seats for a change. We did just that – 2nd row center! I got a lot of pictures at Disney Dreams but most were blurry because I don’t have an image stabilizing lens. Disney Dreams was the best show we’ve ever seen including shows at the parks. Whatever you do, don’t miss this one! And try to get up toward the front too, it was AWESOME! DD10 & DS5 decided not to dine with us, but go back to their clubs instead so we went up to deck 9 and fed them. DH, DD14, and I had another great dinner at Parrot Cay. Romy even let us take DD10 a piece of crème brulee cheesecake back to the room. After dinner we went back to the room and packed up, then went shopping, and walked around before going to get the kids. DD10 begged to stay, but DS5 was already asleep. DD10 was playing trivia and ended up winning a hat and pin for both her and her brother!

Still to come...embarkation day and navigators.

Great trip report. Love the photos! Thank you for taking the time to share.

Thursday, October 02, 2008 – Back To Reality!

Unfortunately, we were back at Port Canaveral when we woke up. We ate breakfast at 8:00 a.m. back at Parrot Cay although we did check and BBB was open, but we weren’t in a big hurry. Breakfast seemed better in the restaurant than it had been at BBB, especially the eggs. Then we walked off the boat with no line at all. There were porters waiting in the terminal. DH & DD10 went with him to get the luggage and the other kids & I got in the custom’s line. We only waited about 5-10 minutes, and then they checked our passports took the card we had filled out, the porter walked to the car with us and loaded our luggage and that was that. Disembarking was 100x easier than Carnival where we had to stand on the HOT gangway for close to an hour. Now, it’s time to head home and reevaluate our budget to see what can be cut so we can afford another Disney Cruise someday!
Here are a few more tips we have to offer:
1. Bring or buy lanyards – we borrowed ours, but Disney sells them for about $8 each. We never misplaced our KTTW cards and didn’t have to waste time looking for them. We would take them off in the room and hang them up on a hook that was on the wall next to the bathroom door.
2. Everyone needs a watch.
3. Bring a light up clock if you like to know the time in the middle of the night.
4. A highlighter did come in handy to mark the Navigator.
5. Make the time to take a bath. I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed as when I was taking a hot bath and the ship was just barely swaying back and forth.
6. We took big water bottles, but never used them; we just used the cups at the drink station. We did “double cup” though because they get soggy on the bottom very quickly.
7. Look at investing in a waterproof camera. I used a disposable one at Castaway Cay and was very disappointed in the quality.
8. Ignore the pleas of family members and take pictures of your food for scrapbooking!
9. Bring dollar bills for tipping room service.

Here are our navigators, though I'm not sure how useful they will be because I think we were on an experimental itenerary to see if they could save fuel. They are kind of hard to read also. If you would like higher resolution copies, just pm your email address.:

I thought the club/lab graduation t-shirts were gray.

From what I had seen on the Disboards, I was excpeting that they would also get "ears", but my daughter said the counselors told them that these new shirts were better than the gray shirts & ears they used to give out. Umm, okay. (better for the bottom line I suppose) They are cute shirts though - they say "Friendship Rocks!"

Thanks so much for taking the time to post your trip report. I really enjoyed reading it and your pictures were awesome. Dh and I are taking our first ever cruise next March (4 nights on the Wonder) so I was very excited to read your report. Thanks also for all the great tips! I took lots of notes. :goodvibes

I'm PMing you. I would love a copy of your navigator. Thanks again!

Thank you Buzz323 for your trip report and pictures. I eagerly read it thoroughly.

I'm a mom of four kids almost like your's ages. We're strongly thinking about a four night Wonder cruise in early March to tag along with our 6 day WDW vacation.

Question --- would the DCL clubs consider placing my 6 1/2 year with my 10 1/2 year child together in the same club. My 6 1`/2 year old son won't go in the clubs by himself.

Your pictures of the graduation night with the children on stage with M/M and the t=shirts. Could you elaborate that more? Will the parents watch it too?

Another question -- is the lunch food on Castaway Cay island free?

Where do you view the fireworks on pirate night -- I'm assuming the top of the deck ship.

Thanks so much! And thanks for your tips on the cruise.

We never asked this question, but from other posts I've read, the child has to be within a month or so of their birthday before they will change their group.

The "graduation" was the last afternoon on the cruise. We dropped the kids off at their clubs and then we went to the Walt Disney Theatre. The program is for the parents to watch. They come in wearing their t-shirts (a different color for each size), they sing and dance a little and the counselors play a slide show of pictures taken while they were in their clubs. (Our kids must have avoided the cameras!), then they take them back to the club where you can get them or let them stay - mine wanted to stay. We practically had to drag our daughter out that night.

Another question -- is the lunch food on Castaway Cay island free?

YES! Just like on the boat, you only pay for specialty drinks. They have a buffet line with chicken, ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, garlic bread, fruit, potato salad, chocolate chip cookies, and banana bread I think. They have the Coke drink station along with soft serve ice cream.

Where do you view the fireworks on pirate night -- I'm assuming the top of the deck ship.

We watched from Deck 10, but it was soooo crowded on deck 9 & 10 around the Goofy Pool, I would be interested in knowing if there are other places on the ship where you can get a good view also. Last year we went to MNSSHP and my husband had read on the boards to stand in front of Mickey's Philarmagic to watch the "Boo To You" fireworks and it was amazing! The music was really loud and the fireworks burst right over our heads. We don't even bother with fireworks if they aren't Disney anymore because we're so spoiled. The ones on the ship weren't spectaular, it was just the fact that we were on a cruise in the middle of the ocean watching fireworks that made it magical.

Thanks so much! And thanks for your tips on the cruise.
You are very welcome! I think I'll write a trip report for all our vacations in the future just for my own scrapbook. I'm always amazed at how quick I forget the little things.

AWESOME idea! I had not thoght of that. I wonder if I can have Christmas cards made from them or if that would be a copyright issue. I could always crop out the Disney logo. :rolleyes1

This may have been answered by now. You have 2 options for Xmas cards - or for any reprints.

1) Shutters can make your Christmas Cards while you're onboard! They are the standard rectangular photo ones... but with cool DCL graphics, of course.

2) When you get home, you can print the online Photo Release that allows you to use your Shutters photos for reprints, photo books, cards, whatever. Also, I always scan my photos at home - to keep as backups (just in case of damage or loss) and to use for such projects. I've never had a problem uploading the scans to online photo services.

HTH!

GREAT TR!!! Love all the pics!
We sail The Wonder in a little over 2 weeks. I can't wait to get back to my Happy Place!!!!
