About 13 years ago, my husband and I were in a Disney Store when our toddler stopped suddenly in the middle of the store and pointed to the giant Beauty and the Beast display on the wall and pointed and screamed in delight “BEAST!” That was it. We were hooked. Two kids later, countless DVD’s (and VHS) movies, toys, games, clothes, and seven trips to the parks, we are finally able to take the vacation we’ve been dreaming about since the cruise ships were unveiled 10 years ago. From September 28th thru October 2nd, we called room 8562 on the Disney Wonder our home. We researched everything we could find out about this cruise for months and found so much useful information on the Disboards that I wanted to post this trip report in case other people are looking for some information.

Sunday, September 28, 2008- Embarkation :cheer2:

We arrived at Port Canaveral around 10:40 a.m. (btw, it’s terminal A not B, oops!). Going through security was a breeze even with a little alcohol tucked away in our backpack. Then I checked us in and DH checked the kids (DD10 & DS5) into their respective clubs (we had preregistered online) and got wrist bands and the beeper. I was glad there was just one beeper to keep up with because I thought there would be one for each child. We had our picture made with Captain Mickey, walked outside to look at the ship, and the kids played cards. The time went by quickly and they called our group (#4) around 12:00 p.m. After we walked through and they welcomed us aboard (so cool!), we went up to deck nine and just got lunch from the snack counters (pizza, burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips). DH was a little disappointed because the burgers are the same as the parks that he’s never been crazy about. The pizza was a little better than the parks and the chicken strips were good, we’ve never had them at the parks so I can’t compare them. The hot dogs are the same as the parks, but we’ve always enjoyed them. We had our bathing suits so the kids could change and enjoy the pools before it got crowded. DD10 and DS5 must have gone down the slide 10 times or more. This is when I got my first drink of the day. If you get the souvenir cup (it’s $7.95 as opposed to just $3.95 for a drink of the day in a regular cup) you can get it refilled each day for $3.95 which is a good deal at most bars because they use much smaller glasses than the souvenir cup, but DH never got the souvenir cup and when he got the drink of the day from one of the bars on deck 9, they came in glasses that were just as big. :drinking1: We walked around a little and then our room was ready at 1:30 p.m. Our stateroom was great – only a little smaller than a value resort room but plenty of storage and a lot of coat hangers (23 actually). We were in a category 4 because we’re a family of 5 so we had a veranda that was awesome, though not quite as private as I expected. I didn’t panic nearly as much as I thought I would about the kids (especially DS5) leaning over. He had to stand on his tiptoes just to see over the rail and we already had the talk about not standing on the furniture and he also knew he wasn’t allowed out there by himself. Some of the rails on the upper decks actually came up to DH chest and he’s 6’2” and they all have plexiglass. You still have to watch your kids, but Disney has done everything to make it as safe as possible. DH & I took a Carnival cruise in May ’07 and I saw lots of places where little ones could easily slip through the rails.
We unpacked our carry-ons and then walked around. We wanted to check out our table at the restaurants. Animator’s Palate is a Muster Station for the drill so they had all the tables covered with white linens. It was very quiet and kind of dark in there and the linens looked like white sheets covering bodies on all the tables – quite spooky! When we got back all but one piece of our luggage was there. At 4:00, we donned our life jackets to go to the safety drill which took less than 30 minutes which I also do not mind at all because I’m paranoid and am all for the “better safe than sorry” motto. Speaking of which, I would like to mention that I loved Disney’s obsession with the hand sanitizer and wipes and that they make the kids wash their hands when they enter the kid’s clubs. When we took our life jackets back to the room, our missing piece of luggage still had not arrived so I was starting to get nervous, but we went to the sail-a-way party on deck nine. It was a lot of fun and the kids got streamers to wave. We went back to the stateroom to watch the ship pull away from dock from our veranda and found our other piece of luggage waiting – yay! I felt much better. It was so cool to see all the people waving from the dock. I knew employees at the terminal waved with big Mickey hands, but I didn’t realize how many other people line up along the shore to wave. It looked like some people had brought out a picnic to watch the ship leave and some also had Mickey hands or Disney flags or banners. We went back into the stateroom to finish unpacking and we ordered the cheese platter and chocolate chip cookies from room service. The cookies really are great; the cheese platter was pretty small but we really didn’t need to eat much anyway.
By this time, it was time to start getting ready for the show and dinner. We had second seating at 8:15 and the shows start and 6:15 so I didn’t know if there would be enough time to get ready for dinner after the show – there would have been since the shows end at 7:15. Our dinner rotation was TAAP. DS5 was not too thrilled about getting changed for dinner. We should have known how exhausted he was since we picked him up from school on Friday and drove straight to Orlando. We hit Atlanta rush hour so it was after midnight when we checked in and then got up at the crack of dawn Saturday to do a whirlwind 3 parks in one day. It was a challenge but we managed all of these attractions in one day: Soarin’, Test Track, Mission Space, Living Seas, Turtle Talk, Tower Of Terror, Rockin’ Roller Coaster, Indiana Jones, Star Tours, Philharmagic, Tea Cups, Indy Cars, Snow White, Space Mountain, Stitch’s Great Escape, Buzz Space Ranger Spin, Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Pirates of the Caribbean, & Cinderella’s Carousel! :scared1: Then Sunday we got up at the crack of dawn again so it’s no wonder he was worn out. When he gets tired, he starts obsessing over little things like not wanting to tuck his shirt in because we were making him look like an “old man”. I am soooo sorry our neighbors had to hear that fuss – it was not very Disney-like. He pouted all throughout the Golden Mickeys and the Mickey Mania show in Studio Sea. He continued to pout in Triton’s until he ate a couple of rolls and I realized that he really had not eaten much at lunch because he was so excited about the Mickey Pool. So not only was he exhausted but also starving. He took one sip of chocolate milk and laid his head down in my lap and was out like a light. :faint: So the rest of us – DH, DD14 & DD10 enjoyed a nice quiet first dinner. We got to know our servers ( Romy & Everett) a little. They were really great. I know it’s their job, but they make everyone feel special. They knew our names before we even got there. They cut our kid’s steak up. Even DD14 enjoyed the service because she had planned to skip dinner on our last night to watch the season premier of Pushing Daises, but ended up coming to dinner with us. Romy did a few puzzles with crayons for them that they got a big kick out of.
I had studied menus online and was a little disappointed to find that the Mariner’s Soufflé wasn’t offered anymore, but I got the cherries jubilee and they were very good. DD10 got the crème brulee she had been dying to try and she wasn’t disappointed at all. After dinner we went back to the room to find the beds made out and an elephant towel animal waiting for us. We studied the next day’s navigator for a while then we were all gently rocked to sleep!

DS5's first sight of the ship. (Ok, so I missed his first reaction & this is a reenactment):

Sure - it was right at $2900 (not including tips) BUT we booked before they started the fuel surcharge & we declined trip insurance & we sailed during huricane season.

The stateroom was fine unless the murphy bed was made out then you couldn't open the doors to the trunk where I had all the kid's clothes and you had to climb over it to get to the verandah. First thing each morning my husband put it back into the wall which I don't think your supposed to because you need a special key to lock it in place, but we just propped the chair up against it. :rolleyes1

Enjoying your trip report!

We leave on the Wonder this Sunday, October 12. We are also doing three parks in one day--HS, AK and Epcot which will have EMH. We are doing MNSSHP at MK the Thursday the ship gets back and then the 3 in 1 day on Friday. Glad to know it can be done. Did you drive on your own or take Disney transportation between the parks?

Be sure to wear comfy shoes! We drove to each park - thought it might be faster plus we were planning to grab lunch in between the parks but ended up eating at MGM & MK anyway. We did the MNSSHP last year and it was lots of fun, but rained before the parade so we didn't get to see the headless horseman. I remember we got in a lot earlier than what was advertised like around 4 I think. Hope y'all have tons of fun!!!

Will post day 2 tonight, but here are some of our tips I meant to post with day one:
1. Arrive to the port early! The Disney magic begins once you pull into the parking lot!
2. If you like "grown-up" drinks, take your favorite beverage in your carry-on (no ice). A small rolling cooler would have been handy.
3. Hit the pools first thing - they were all but empty.
4. Wear a watch. My husband was the only one with a watch and he got soooo tired of hearing "What time is it now" that he said he's buying all of us watches for Christmas this year. :) I usually rely on my cell phone for the time, but after we left port it had crazy times and dates showing up till we got back.
5. Two-way radios. We bought them especially for the cruise & left them charging at the house. If they work on the ship, they would have been very useful especially with my 14-year-old daughter.
6. Bring a hair dryer! Ours wasn't strong enough to dry nail polish.
7. They provide you plenty of shampoo & conditioner so unless your hooked on your own brand save the space in your suitcase. One note though, our 5 year old has Eczema and can only use a couple of different kinds of shampoos without breaking out. I forgot his and used Disney's on him and he is still broken out - my bad. :guilty:
8. Bring your camera's battery charger - I went through 3 full batteries! And always have your camera with you. Even after deleting the really blurry pics, I ended up with 450 and regret not taking more! I also regret consenting to the pleas of my family not to embarrass them by taking pictures of the food!

Thanks for the info! Can I ask you where you booked your DCL trip, thru the website or thru an agent? Thanks!

Monday, September 29, 2008 – Day At Sea
Since Monday was our day at sea, we let DS5 sleep in. I think he slept about 13 hours that night. DD14 , DD10 & I sat on the veranda waiting for the sunrise only to realize we were on the wrong side – I’m a little “directionally challenged”! After everyone was up and ready, we went up to Beach Blanket Buffet for breakfast. We had a great location for our stateroom – deck 8 aft. It was so convenient to deck nine (and the drink station). We ate entirely too much breakfast – biscuits, gravy, bacon (not crisp enough), sausage links (very good), eggs, grits, donuts, etc, etc. etc (you get the point), we were pretty miserable and decided to try to do a lighter breakfast from then on – so we could eat more lunch and snacks! DD10 & DS5 were really excited about getting to their clubs. Checking them in and out was way easier than I had thought. I didn’t realize that they took them all over the ship, but they keep in touch with headphones and know exactly where you’re child is at all times. I don’t really know how they keep all that chaos under control, but they do and with a smile to boot! The only time it took very long to check them out is when they didn’t want to come with us. DD14 had no interest in the teen club what so every so she stayed with us most of the time. She did go see Wall-E and we took the opportunity to check out the quiet cove pool for a little bit. It was really nice and not crowded even though it was our day at sea, but there had been a brief shower right before we went. Both DD10 & DS5 got to make flubber in their clubs – DS5 was extremely impressed with this activity. Monday was our “dressy night” so we got all dressed up and had our picture made. DS5 consented to tucking his shirt in again, but was still convinced we were out to make him look like an “old man”. Toy Story was the show this night and we were late again so our seats were pretty far back. The props in this show are really cool and I wish we had had better seats. It really was a great show; however, we all found the character of Sid a little annoying. That night we ate at Animator’s Palate and it was show night – very impressive. That night our two younger ones wanted to go back to the clubs and DD14 wanted to watch a movie in the stateroom – can’t remember which one Iron Man or the new Indiana Jones. (On a side note about the stateroom TV’s – there tiny like 13 inches. This was the only negative thing I had to mention on the comment card. I know you’re not supposed to be watching TV on a cruise, but they did have a good selection of channels and movies. Though I almost wished they didn’t have CNN because DH was flipping through Monday afternoon and said “does that say the DOW’s down 777 points”. I said no, you just can’t see it on that TV. Boy, was I wrong. We had to go find another “drink of the day” to forget we just saw that!) That night DH and I caught the comedy act in Wavebands. It was Heath Hyche and pretty funny. It was listed as 18 and over, but it wasn’t bad at all. You see much worse on primetime. When we went to get the kids, DD10 wasn’t ready so I took DS5 back to the room and stayed with him and DD14; DH went up to deck 9 to catch some Monday Night Football on the Ariel View. He started chatting with this guy and the guy asked him what he did so he told him and then asked the guy what he did and he said he was Noah, Disney’s Guest Artist. We saw him airbrush a painting later; he is extremely talented!

Whose idea was it to show this on a ship in the middle of the ocean???

Grits? They have grits now?

:woohoo:

That's new.

Wow...what a nice update ! Just want to mention it is so nice to see everything....for a newbie who hasn't cruised yet. (We are contemplating one in our near future :rolleyes1 ...now if I can overcome my fear of hanging out in the middle of the ocean, I'm guessing it is normal) I am pricing costs at the moment...wondering how you determine the tipping situation. Do they tell you the amount and who to tip....or do you base it on your individual situation...based on service? How much do you think I'll need to budget tips for? Again, thanks so much for taking the time to do this for us! Love the formal pic of your family....would make a nice holiday photo!:santa:

great report! thanks for sharing...:flower3: and thanks for including pictures :thumbsup2 (i love TRs with pics) can't wait to read more popcorn::

Oh, they are new at making them! That explains why they were so runny - they need a little more practice! ;)
What part of the upstate are you from? We're in NEGA.

Just south of Greenville in Simpsonville. Where are you in GA? We go to Commerce pretty regularly. There's a few stores down there we have to get our fix of every now and then.

They leave you a sheet on the last day to calculate the suggested tips for the head server, server, assistant server and cabin steward. Your welcome to adjust the figures accordingly, but we just followed the suggestions and it was (i think) $240 for the five of us. We put this on our credit card and they gave us receipts to give out. We also tipped room service a couple of dollars each time and at the terminal we tipped the porters $1 per bag when we arrived and about $2 per bag when we left because he waited with us through customs and then took the bags to the parking lot and loaded them. Tips for drinks are already calculated into the total from the bars. Hope that helps!

Love the formal pic of your family....would make a nice holiday photo!:santa:
AWESOME idea! I had not thoght of that. I wonder if I can have Christmas cards made from them or if that would be a copyright issue. I could always crop out the Disney logo. :rolleyes1
