Disney Wonder 6/29- 7/3 Cruise w/ 2 stops at Castaway Cay!

THE CAST:
Me (36) this cruise is the 6th Disney Cruise I’ve taken
DH (32) this is his 6th Disney Cruise
Mom (55) this is my mom’s 3rd Disney Cruise
Mom’s Boyfriend (50 something) this is his 1st Disney Cruise – we’ll call him DMB for this TR

DM & DMB’s flight arrived in Orlando on Friday evening after sitting on the runway for about 3 hours in Atlantic City, NJ due to bad weather. DH and I are Florida residents, so we waited patiently for their flight to FINALLY arrive at 11:00 PM on Friday evening.

We spent quite a large portion of our day on Saturday over at Saratoga Springs. DH & I are DVC members (have been since 2000) and DM and DMB joined in May and decided to add on some more points. We arrived at SSR at 1:00 and left after 5:00 PM. We celebrated their new point add on at AKL by going out to dinner at the Turf Club at SSR.

Sunday Morning – we had a strict B.I.S. (butt in seat) rule in effect for 9:00 AM – we were on our way – until we passed Dunkin’ Donuts – had to make a coffee stop. Finally on our way to the Port! Yippee!

We arrived at Port Canaveral at about 10:20 or so. DH dropped us off with the luggage (we all over packed of course) and went to park the car. We headed over to the Castaway Club line and waited there for about 10 minutes. We received #3 for our boarding number. DH made his way up to us on the Castaway Club line and they called the two of us to check in. DM & DMB got called right after us. We got our Castaway Club lanyards and our Key to the World Cards and we were ready to go!---slight problem, it was 11:00 and we had an hour to go before boarding would begin. Counting down 60 minutes felt like 60 hours, but boarding finally began!

As I mentioned earlier, we had group 3 boarding. There were not many people in group 2 so before we knew it they called #3 and we were on our way onto the Wonder. After having our photos taken & being welcomed on board we were told to go to Parrot Cay for lunch. We all wanted to go up to Beach Blanket Buffet so we asked if we could go up to deck 9, and of course they said yes. We had a great lunch and then we gave DMB a tour of the ship (no need to make him wait until 2:00 for the walking ship tour when we’ve all cruised enough times to give him a tour our selves). We started on deck 10 and worked our way down to deck 3 – once he saw Diversions we couldn’t get him or my DH out of there! They sat there and watched soccer for 1/2 an hour! DMB was so amazed at the beauty of the ship. I love watching people experience how beautiful the ships are. Even though you tell people how classic the ship’s décor is they still envision a very “kiddie” looking ship. At 1:30 we went to check out our rooms. My DH & I were in Stateroom 6581. We had a Cat. 11 (Standard Inside Stateroom). It was in a great location, basically mid ship. We only went in for a few minutes to drop off our carry on bags (DH had been carrying a carryon with 24 bottles of water in it & he was getting cranky about it). We received our Castaway Club gift - a black tote bag with 2 Castaway Club sport bottles, a note book and pen and a red mesh beach bag. We were only in there for about 5 minutes when I asked my DH if he smelled something “vomity” ?? He said no. So, we left and went to Jana’s Discover Nassau Shopping Presentation in the Buena Vista Theatre. My DM and DMB met us there and I ended up winning a rum cake from the raffle, DH won a color changing tote bag from Del Sol and DM won a Del Sol Baseball cap. My DM and I each purchased the $25 preferred shopping book at the presentation. For $25 we were going to get over $2000 in coupons & gift cards, etc. I'll go into better detail about this on Part 3 of my TR. This was the 1st time in 6 cruises that I went to the shopping presentation & I never would have guessed that I would have plunked down $25 on a preffered shopping card - whatever that is.

Me & My Mom on Deck 10 after lunch

After the shopping presentation we headed back to the rooms to get our life jackets for the mandatory boat drill. Again upon entering the room I asked DH if he smelled something “vomity” , he said “No” again. We attended the mandatory boat drill and headed back up to our Stateroom to drop off the life jackets and head up to the Sail Away Celebration. We went back into the room & DH went into the bathroom and before he shut the bathroom door came out and said “You were right, there is a vomit odor –it’s coming from the bathroom”. Great. I went in and he was right. I closed the door and there was red dots along the bottom half of the bathroom door. Being the clean freak I am, I took a wad of tissues and wet them with burning hot water and soap and wiped it off the door, then I went up to Guest Services and politely mentioned that “upon entering our Stateroom we noticed a vomit odor and then discovered some vomit stains on the bathroom door that I wiped off”. I asked if they could have someone clean/deodorize the bathroom. Of course they apologized and said they would make sure it was taken care of. Within 15 minutes or so they came down to clean the bathroom. No big deal. We met my DM and DMB up on deck 7 (their room was 7067, mid ship). We headed up to the sail away party. I was pleased to see that the weather held up. The sun was still shining and there was a nice breeze. We were up on deck 10 sitting at a table looking down on all the fun and my DMB wanted to go down to deck 9 and be right in the middle of it all. We went down the stairs and were handed some streamers that are on a wand (don’t remember getting those last year or the previous 5 years we’ve sailed) and we each got a “Bon Voyage” drink (a tradition for myself and my DH –that drink is the ½ pina colada ½ strawberry daiquiri---LOVE IT). We got our drinks just in time for the big count down. The horn blew and we were cruising! We stayed for a few minutes and then went back up to deck 10 to watch as we left the Port. It was about 5:15 – 5:20 now so we went back to our rooms to get ready for dinner.

Me, DM & DMB at the Sail Away Celebration

We had the first dinner seating this time (the first time we’ve ever had the early seating. We’ve had the late seating the other 5 times we sailed). DH & I got changed and headed up to Parrot Cay –our dining rotation was Parrot Cay, Tritons, Tritons, Animators Palate. We had table #1. We were shown to our table DM and DMB were already seated and waiting for us. Rowena and Marianna were our servers. I had the Smoky Chicken, Vegetables and Cheddar Cheese Fritters, the Parrot Cay Salad and the Caribbean Roast Chicken for dinner. DH had the Baked Crab Martinique, the Caesar Salad and the Rib Eye for his dinner. DM & DMB had the same as my DH except they both had the Grouper as their main entrée. The food at Parrot Cay is my favorite. For Dessert I had the Banana Bread Pudding, DM had the Lemon Meringue Pie, DMB had the Ice Cream Sundae and DH had the Chocolate Smore Vanilla Cake. Everyone had a great meal.

After dinner DM and DMB went to the Cadillac Lounge and my DH and I went up to deck 10 and walked around the deck . We all met up in the theatre for the Golden Mickey’s. After the Golden Mickey's we did some shopping and then went down to Wavebands for Match Your Mate. My DH & I never miss the Match Your Mate game show. We got picked as the newlywed couple on our first cruise in 2001 and won. We’ve noticed that on every cruise we’ve been on the Newlyweds always win – too many experiences to pick from for the couples who’ve been married a long time. We hung around Wavebands for “One Hit Wonders” and then headed back to our room at around Midnight. DM and DMB stayed out until almost 2:00 AM!

Back in our room there was a bottle of sparkling cider and 2 champagne glasses with a note apologizing for the condition of the stateroom when we boarded. Disney has excellent customer service recovery. It really wasn’t that big of a deal. I wasn’t even upset about it, I just wanted the smell to go away! Our towel animal was an elephant wearing my sunglasses, and we received a gift from the DVC -- it was a book --like a memory book that had DVC lanyards and point charts, etc.

Day 2 – CASTAWAY CAY
Just in case you missed Day 1 –
Disney Wonder 6/29- 7/3 Double Dip Cruise

My DH set a wake - up call for 7:15. I was the lucky one who slept next to the nightstand with the phone on it – I wondered why he didn’t take the side of the bed that he usually sleeps on when we’re at home!

Mickey called and woke us up at 7:15. We got up, dressed, put on the sun block, packed some water bottles and headed up to Parrot Cay to meet my mom and her boyfriend for breakfast. They were up there & had started eating already. We grabbed a quick bite (yogurt & ½ a bagel for me, fruit & a bagel for my DH). We finished breakfast a little after 8:00 and then realized we forgot our photo ID’s . We ran up to the room to get them. We were off the ship by 8:25 or so. We grabbed some towels and caught the tram to the family beach. We headed to our usual favorite spot – all the way down at the end of the family beach. My DH got his beloved hammock and we relaxed for a while before grabbing our 2 day tube rental and going into the water. Oh, actually my DH took a Looong swim while I was reading my book. He swims so far out that I can barely see him. When he got back from his swim I asked my DH to set the alarm on his watch for 10:00 so that my mom and I could go and get our picture taken with Capt. Jack. At 10:00 DH's watch alarm sounded, and my DM and I grabbed our cameras and headed out to get our picture w/ Capt. Jack. We waited with about 5 others and got our pics. taken. Pictures with Captain Jack were a lot of fun. By the way, mh husbands watch won't stop beeping at 10:00! He's tried to shut if off and it just keeps re-setting itself and sounding a little alarm at 10:00 every day! He keeps saying "Time to go see Captain Jack" every time the thing goes off!

The water was great, the perfect temp. –by the afternoon it was about 82 degrees. Every once in a while I’d hear something in the distance that sounded like thunder. Every time I asked no one else heard it. Hhhmm, I live in Florida, I think I know thunder when I hear it, thank you very much! By 11:45 it was obvious that it was thunder. Some black clouds were rolling in. We went to Cookies for lunch but we weren’t sure how long we’d have before the skies opened up. It actually never did rain. The clouds just blew right on by and we never had a drop of rain. At about 12:15 or so my mom & I decided to go back to the ship. We walked back and it was HOT out- very humid with no breeze.

After we got back on the ship we went up to the Quiet Cove Pool on deck 9 to cool off. There were very few people enjoying the Quiet Cove. DM & I ordered some drinks and sat by the pool. The water in the pool was the perfect temperature - nice and cool. At about 1:30 or so DH & DMB showed up and said they were going to go play basketball up on deck 10. We enjoyed the sun for a bit longer and then went to our State Rooms to shower and change.

At 4:00 we attended the DVC Member Celebration in Studio Sea. They gave out bags with DVC Member baseball hats & there were drinks & snacks. They pulled names from a raffle and if you answered a DVC question correctly you’d win a prize. I won a DVC bag and DM won a beach towel. We left at 4:40 because we had the Castaway Club party that was starting in Wavebands at 4:45. We enjoyed some snacks (Mickey rice krispy treats) and before we knew it we had to leave to get ready for dinner.

Tonight’s dinner was at Tritons. It was the Pirate Night menu. I had a little too much sun and ended up with a headache so bad that it made me nauseaus. I went to dinner with all intentions of eating, but when I got into the restaurant and sat down I just didn’t feel well. I ended up going back to my room & taking 3 advil’s and ordering chicken noodle soup from room service (FYI – it’s basically Romin noodles). I was feeling better by 7:00 or so when my DH came back to the room. We decided to go up to the shops & saw that Capt. Jack was taking pictures so, of course I had to go & get another picture!

ANOTHER PHOTO WITH CAPT. JACK

At 8:30 we went to the Walt Disney Theatre to see the Comedy & Ventriloquism of Lynn Trefzger. Her show was very funny. DM doesn’t quite like puppets (kind of the same issue I have with clowns –they’re scary!) So, she didn’t enjoy it as much as the rest of us did. We headed up to The Pirates In the Caribbean Deck Party at about 9:45 or so. It was really windy so I wasn’t sure if they were going to let Mickey swoop in from above and save the day, but he did. DM & DMB enjoyed the show, & fireworks.

After the Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party I still wasn’t feeling so well so DH and I decided to turn in for the night. DM & DMB went to Wavebands for Krazy Karaoke. Our Towel Animal tonight: PUPPY!

DAY 3
NASSAU

We woke up at about 9:30 –no wake up call today. We didn’t have any excursions set for today. It was raining and windy out. Pretty dreary. DH & I went up to Parrot Cay to meet DM for breakfast. DMB decided to skip shopping in Nassau and headed out to Atlantis to hit the casino. After breakfast DH, DM and I headed out with our shopping maps & Preffered Shopping Card/book that we purchased for $25 on day 1. We headed out to the stores that had good offers and free gifts EFFY Jewelry had a free pendant (amethyst) and I purchased the matching earrings for $9.99 At Del Sol we received a tote bag (not sure if you’re keeping count but this was like the 4th tote bag I received so far). We also purchased 2 t-shirts and some color changing nail polish. We spent over $60 so we received a free color changing baseball hat and a teddy bear key chain. There were a couple of other stores that had “free” giveaways according to the book we purchased. 1 store (not sure of the name I have to go back through my stuff and look) but they were giving away a free pendant and a free sapphire stone –the lady was really annoyed at us for bringing in the coupon and asking for it. Needless to say that changed our mood and decided that walking around in the rain on a scavenger hunt for knick-knacks was not worth our time. We headed back to the ship and ended up buying some Christmas ornaments while in the building that you have to walk back through (I guess it’s the old straw market). The people in there were much nicer and accommodating, even lowering prices for us if we purchased more than 1 ornament (which we did).

We were back on the ship by 12:20 or so. We headed up to Beach Blanket Buffet for lunch. I think we were the only 3 people in there! After lunch the rain had stopped and the sun was coming out so we decided to go get our bathing suits on and go up to the Quiet Cove Pool. The sun made an appearance for about ½ hour. DH went back to the room to nap and DM and I stayed and read our books and just RELAXED. At about 3:00 or so I actually went back to the room and started packing away stuff that I knew we wouldn’t be needing again. DH decided he needed a snack after his nap and ordered the “All Hands On Deck” cheese/cracker platter and some chocolate chip cookies. Since I knew he was trapped waiting for his food, I had him help me start packing up because I knew that I didn’t want to leave it all for the next evening. After packing we showered & got ready for dinner.

Tonight’s dinner was at Triton’s again (my least favorite restaurant on board). I’m just not that into French Cuisine. It was about 10 till six and still no sign of DMB—maybe he was winning big! –No such luck. He showed up about 5 minutes later and said that he was down about $400 –I’d have been pretty P.O.’d about it, but they live near Atlantic City and are used to the ups and downs of gambling. After dinner we all headed to the Cadillac Lounge to hear Amma Osei’s cabaret act. She is FANTASTIC! She is one of the Disney Performers – she sings “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” during the Golden Mickey’s and “The Circle of Life” during Dreams. Anyway, her cabaret show was great. She sang some songs from Dream Girls, Wicked, Into the Woods, The Wiz, etc. She’s a lovely girl. There were quite a few people there to see her perform. Some of the officers came in and watched as well. She did a great job.

ME AND DM BEFORE DINNER

At 8:30 we went to see “Toy Story the Musical”. All of us really enjoyed this show –until about 5 minutes before it ended when my DM realized she’d lost her purse! DM & DMB went up to guest services to see if anyone turned it in. The family in front of us must have heard us talk about it and the lady in front of me said that her granddaughter found a purse in the ladies room before the show began and turned it into Guest Services. We thanked them and by the time the show let out DM was up by the shops waiting for us to come out of the theatre. Also, let me just say that my DH and I were disappointed with the merchandise in “Treasure Ketch”. There was really very little Disney merchandise in there. They have a lot of perfumes up there now, scarves, purses, costume jewelry, etc. Last year they had a much better assortment. They used to have a lot more Disney Cruise Line merchandise. Not so much this time.

TOY STORY THE MUSICAL

At 9:45 or so DM & DMB went down to the Cadillac Lounge to see Amma Osei’s second Cabaret act. DH and I headed into Wavebands to see Lynn Trefzger’s adult act. Very funny. Much funnier than her “family friendly” show. Wavebands was SO packed! There were people standing into the hallway trying to see in. There were no seats left in the entire club. After Lynn Trefzger’s show was over it was “Rock & Country” night in Wavebands. DH & I stayed about 5 minutes and then left. Our towel animal tonight: Monkey!

DAY 4
Second Stop at Castaway Cay!

We set a wake-up call again for 7:15. We both got up and got dressed, and put our sunblock on, etc. When we woke up we put on the TV to the channel that shows the basketball court on Deck 10. It looked nice out. We left our room and went up to deck 3 to Parrot Cay for breakfast…….as we walked past the port holes on deck 3 we saw the gray sky and the CHOPPY water and the palm trees that were no longer vertical! They were swaying on their sides! OH NO! We had already docked so atleast I knew we were on the island ( I read a TR recently where they couldn’t dock the boat on CC due to high winds). We ate breakfast (no sign of DM or DMB) and headed onto the island. It was 8:30. There was NO ONE getting off the ship! Not sure why, it wasn’t raining YET. I was determined to spend our last day on Castaway Cay –no gray sky and big clouds were going to stop us! DH & I walked to our favorite spot on the family beach. DH got his hammock. The beach was bare! There was a man with a 3 or 4 year old little boy not too far from us but that was it. The sand was freshly raked – no footprints! Oh, when we were getting off the ship there was a big chalk board showing all the excursions that had been cancelled. We heard the announcement as we were leaving the ship that said there were 20 mile per hour wind gusts and that they were cancelling the early excursions and they would see about the excursions set for after 11:30 (I do believe they did have excursions going on after 11:30 when it cleared up because we saw people parasailing and on jet ski's). It was a little chilly on the beach. I laid out on a lounger and started to read my book. I could feel drips of rain falling but it didn’t bother us. I put on my big beach hat, my cover up and covered myself with a beach towel and waited it out. No umbrellas up today, too windy.

EMPTY BEACH

In less than an hour or so the winds just stopped. The clouds started to part and I could see blue skies beneath the gray clouds! YES! The sun had to be somewhere close…..15 minutes after that the sun was shining bright! There were a few clouds but by 10:45 or so the weather was completely different! It ended up being a beautiful day. DM & DMB had met up with us by now and we all had reserved the 2 day raft/tube rental so we were all floating and enjoying the beach on Castaway Cay. By 12:15 or so we went to Cookies BBQ for lunch.

After lunch we all went back to the ship to lounge out by the pool (people were still streaming off the ship at this point). Again, not too many people at the Quite Cove. We stayed out until about 2:15 or so. I headed down to our room and got showered/changed and met DM up at the Spa at 3:15 because we had a manicure/pedicure appointment princess: After being pampered a bit I went back down to my State Room to get ready for dinner. DH was not in there ---no note? Where did he go? I figured he went to get something to eat and I started to get ready for dinner. DH came back and said he was walking by the DVC desk and Lisa (DVC Cast Member we met at the DVC Member Celebration) asked him if he wanted to go in for the DVC Group Presentation that was about to begin. She said there weren’t many people in there yet (due to the fact that the weather cleared up) and that it might be nice for a member to attend. So, he felt bad and went in. There were 5 people in Studio Sea for the DVC Group Presentation. DH said he went in, got himself some chocolate chip cookies and soda. He said that he filled out a raffle ticket when he first went in and didn’t think about it again until the end of the event when they said they were raffling off a Ship Board Credit. Ooooh…….Yep he won it! YEAY! A $300 ship board credit! I did NOT believe him (he jokes around A LOT). But it was true. How cool! There would be shopping tonight!

Our dinner this evening was at Animators Palate. I couldn’t believe our vacation was almost over :sad1: I really enjoy the food at AP. I had the Wild Mushroom Risotto appetizer, the Confetti Tomato Salad, and the Lemon Peppered Oven Baked Chicken. All very good. DH had the Filet Mignon & DM & DMB had the Salmon. For dessert I had the Strawberry Shortcake, DH had the Chocolate & Peanut Butter Pie & DM & DMB shared the Chocolate Cake. DH & I gave our servers their tip envelopes, and said our goodbyes –(there was NO way we’d be getting up to have breakfast at AP at 6:30 in the morning). Then DH & I went to the Captains Signing so that we could get Captain John to sign one of our many souveniers. DM & DMB stayed back at AP to finish their dessert and watch the little “show” the wait staff does at AP.

At the Captain's Signing

Even though we’ve seen Disney Dreams quite a few times, I just never can miss that show. DM & DMB wanted to see it so, we met up with them and we all enjoyed the show. After Dreams DH and I finished spending our $300 credit (didn’t take all that long) and then we went back to our State Room to finish packing it all away and get the luggage out by 11:00 PM.

DISNEY DREAMS

Our Cruise Director, Rachel mentioned not to miss the Cruise Staff Happy Hour in Wavebands at 11:00 –she said it was going to be hilarious – how could we miss that! We met up with DM & DMB at our “usual” table in Wavebands. The cruise staff put on a little skit that was cute and I remember saying to my DH “Is that it”? NO, that wasn’t it. Rachel, Trent, Leslie and the rest of the Cruise Staff sang this HYSTERICAL song that they each had a special part in performing. I won’t give too much away, BUT DO NOT MISS THIS IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO SEE IT! We hung around until 12:30 or so, and then turned in for the night. Our last towel animal: BUNNY!

DAY 5
7:00 AM – wake up call! OH GOD, Is it 7:00 already? DH and I threw our selves together and went up to Beach Blanket Buffet by 7:20 or so and had breakfast w/ DM & DMB. After breakfast we went down to shutters so I could buy my picture with Captain Jack. I said that I didn’t want to buy it, but I just had to go back and get it! We were off the ship and in our car by 8:30. Another amazing Disney Cruise Line experience. We’ll be calling Member Services as soon as they open tomorrow (July 5th) to book our cruise for next year. We’ve decided on the 7 Day Eastern , with the stop in Tortola. We’ve done the 7 day Western a few years ago, so it’s time to try something else. I hope you enjoyed my TR. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will be posting Navigators on Monday (need to use my scanner at work for that). Have a great 4th of July!

Wonderful TR!! Makes me so excited for my DD on the Magic in September!!!:cool1:

Wow, what a great report, I enjoyed it a lot. You are so thorough. Nice to know they have a lot of perfume, there are several on my list I hope to purchase. Your group must have a lucky charm, one of you were always winning something, good for you.

Loved all of the pics. Thanks so much for taking the time so soon after your return to share your trip.
I'll be looking for your Navigators next week.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi!
Thank you for sharing such a GREAT trip report! I really enjoyed reading it and also enjoyed the pics to go along with it. We board the Wonder next Wednesday and your TR got me even more excited! :flower3:

Thank you for sharing your great trip report and photos :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 I can't wait for our double dip in 7 weeks :)

Thanks for the great TR. We will be on the DW for our 3rd wedding Anniversary. I really can't wait till we go. Sounds like we are going to have a blast. :rotfl2: :yay:

Great trip report!! So how many tote bags did you end up with? haha!

What dates are you going next year? We are on the May 23 Tortola cruise!!

Thanks for sharing your trip with us!!

Hi Goofy Gal :) I ended up with 4 tote bags :rotfl2: Can you believe my DH actually wanted to BUY a DCL tote bag in Treasure Ketch on the last night of our cruise! I had to talk him out of it! We are crusing on the September 12th, 2009 Eastern Caribbean to Tortola. I'm glad you enjoyed my TR. I'll post Navigators tomorrow from the scanner that I have at work.

Just a quick FYI to those waiting on the Navigators from my trip - I have emailed them over to WDWINFO and they are now up on the site. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for taking the time to record the details of your trip. We leave this Sunday and we're all very excited to experience our first-ever Disney cruise.

Thanks to people like you, I feel totally prepared.

I'm so worried that there's so much to do that I'll miss something. After reading your report, I realize that I'll probably get to do everything on my list. The main one being relaxing in a hammock away from the crowds, reading my book, enjoying the sights and sounds of the island, while sipping an exotic drink.

As for questions, I have a few:

1. This special sail away drink that you ordered...does it have a name or do you ask them to make it just for you?

2. I've read previous reports that the clubs in Route 66 are very smoky. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. How bad was it on your cruise?

3. What do I have to do to be one of the first people on the ship? How early do I need to be at the port?

4. I'm a clean freak like you so after reading about that little "souvenir" left in your room, I would have been totally paranoid about touching anything else in there. I'm wondering, what else did they miss when preparing the room before you arrived. Did anything else look suspect?

Thank you again for your report. I look forward to reading your answers. Meanwhile, I have to go see if I can pare down all the stuff I'm packing! :)
