My father has been begging me to take him on a cruise for the last two years (since my Magic cruise). For their 50th anniversary some friends donated money for their dream cruise:goodvibes . I have been squirreling away the rest of the money since then and waiting for the right time to take them. I also had to save the funds for my husband and myself as well.
We finally reached our goal this summer and I called my mother to inform her that everything was right and if she was ready, I would call Disney Cruise Lines and make our reservations. She gave me the green light and I was in for a battle!:lmao:
My first Disney cruise was filled with excitement and wonder. Not knowing what was ahead, learning everything I could from the Disboards, etc. This cruise, I thought was going to be pretty simple... just a 4 day... how hard could it be?
My first goal was to pick my rooms. We had 5122 on the Magic and I thought it was the perfect location. So I picked it again on the Wonder and 5622 for my parents. It was a good choice as my folks LOVED the verandah. It was also close to us but not annoyingly close, if ya know what I mean.:rolleyes1
Next, I had to rent a wheelchair for the ship. My parents have difficulties walking and need a wheelchair for long distances. They actually took turns using it, so I didn't need two (thankfully).
My final obstacle before we set sail is to take care of the food issues. My mother has severe food allergies and I wanted to make sure that Disney could handle her request. I knew they wouldn't let her starve.
Now it's just wait and count down the days before we set sail. I really didn't hear much excitement from my parents until a week before the cruise. I kept asking them "are you getting excited?" "yeah, sure" was all I got. Now, a week before the cruise I got "can we leave now?" "I wish we can go today!" Finally, some life!:rotfl2:

Our cruise was for December 14th. We were leaving on the 12th. It would allow us plenty of drive time, coming from Westfield and King North Carolina. I had to allow for plenty of bathroom breaks and snack stops. I did pack drinks and snacks in the car, but my Dad is like a child... he gets cranky if he doesn't get a good meal in his belly.
We planned to stay in Orlando because I wanted to do some shopping in Downtown Disney. By the time we got into town, we made a bee line to our favorite restaurant, Tony Roma's. Love those ribs!
We then head to the hotel, The Marriott at Sea World. The only problem with this wonderful hotel is that the elevators are located at each end of super long halls. My parents had some slight difficulty walking the length of these halls without stopping somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately our rooms were located exactly in the middle of the two elevators and the hotel was booked solid, or I would have requested a room change for the old ones. They didn't complain much because we weren't constantly going in and out.
We did manage to lose a headlight on the van, so James and I left Mom and Dad at the hotel to relax while we went to the local auto store to get a new light. James wanted to test his new GPS on his cellphone. Throughout the day, we ended up doing a total of 5 u-turns because it told us to go the wrong way. Back to the regular GPS.
Once the repair is done, we gather the parents and head off to Downtown Disney... Along with thousands of others with the same idea. First, Santa is there taking photo's. Second, apparently there is a big sale. We had to wait in line just to get into a store, then it took longer to get out! People were getting smart. As soon as they would come in, they would put one person from the group in the register line while the others shopped. This seemed to work out well for some.
I got Mom and Dad two scooter-buggies to roll around in. The problem with this is that my father finds a new found freedom and takes off like a speed demon. Trying to keep the two of them together was quite interesting.
We bought a few things... our mandatory Disney Christmas ornament and a few other gifts, before we decide to call it an early day.
We head off for an early dinner at Joe's Crab Shack. Mom has her standard steak and potato, cooked in a separate skillet so as not to get contaminated, thanks to the manager's understanding of food allergies and a previous phone call to make sure they could accommodate such requests. It's always a good idea to call in advance just to make sure. The rest of us had the crab bucket that came with more than enough food. I thought it was all very tasty. The funny part was when the wait staff started doing the Hokey Pokey in the middle of the floor, My 82 year old father, who walks with a cane gets up and decides to dance with them!:lmao:
Back to the hotel to do laundry and to rest up for the big day. Tomorrow, the Disney Wonder!:cool1:

Hello :)
Im subscribing! :) Met you on the boards before our cruise :) Hope you had as magical time as we did :) Can't wait to relive it through you :)

I love these cruise trip reports.. sounds like your dad is a hoot. Can't wait to hear how the cruise goes

We left the hotel and headed for Port Canaveral. It was about a forty five minute drive (the way I drive!) and my father could't even stay awake for that long.:confused3 As we came over the last bridge, when the boats first come into sight, we had to wake him up! I love the feeling you get when you see the smoke stacks for the first time!
We pull into the gate, unload the folks and the luggage and make sure we have everything needed before James parks the van. I got a wheelchair for Dad while we were waiting for a porter and for James to return. As I was getting a tip for the porter, I let go of the wheelchair. It didn't occur to me to lock the chair or to make sure Dad's feet were on the ground (which they weren't), Dad goes careening into the middle of the road into oncoming traffic. Thankfully, the traffic moves at a snails pace.
Now inside, we try to get through security screening without incident. Nope! Dad sets it off with who knows what! I think it took him about three tries before they finally cleared him. Up the elevator and into the main terminal.
We all get checked in with only one small glitch. Some how, there was a credit card mix up with my parents, which I couldn't understand because they were only using one credit card. It was my mistake because I was the one who did the on-line check in, but it didn't matter because Disney fixed the problem very quickly. We were originally given a #7 boarding pass, but I asked the wonderful man behind the counter if they had anything higher. I lucked out with a #4! I was happy.
Well, it didn't take long before they were announcing the winning family who got to be the first to board. Then it was 1 and 2, then 2 and 3, and then finally the 4's... yeah!:woohoo:
Photo's were taken, gangplank crossed and we were finally on board. I seriously teared up when we were announced. I had to choke it back before the tears started to roll. I am very sentimental about that kind of stuff. My spouse says I'm just mental!
Lunch was at Parrot Cay. Time seemed to be just rolling by. I didn't want it to go so fast. I kept reminding my folks about the day's agenda so they didn't get too confused about everything that was going on. After a long lunch (parents eat slow) we toured the ship a little. We headed up to the rooms to just show them where they were and to our surprise, they were already open. So we dropped off the bags and I quickly decorated the doors before heading off again. At one point, rolling over a threshold, I practically dumped my father on the floor. The wheels of the wheelchair got stuck and came to an abrupt stop. I swear I am NOT trying to kill him... at least not on the first day.
We stop at a bar for a nice drink and then head up to deck 10 to finish our tour. When they make the announcement for the boat drill, James takes them down to Animators Pallet and I run back to the rooms to grab life vests. Although they are in Q and we are in R, we are allowed to sit together. After that, we were allowed to leave a few minutes early to beat the rush for the elevators. We go back to the rooms to put the life vests away and in the process of trying to get Mom out of hers, I ripped a nail off. I'm talking down to the flesh, bleeding, extreme pain! I'm thinking if this is how the rest of the trip is going to be, I want off now!
We head up to Deck ten for the sail away party. Dad can't keep still. He is now up and walking while Mom gets to ride. We circle the boat while he finds just the right spot to watch us sail out to sea. He didn't care much about the dancing and stuff. We did spot a few dolphins swimming around the bow of the ship, which he seemed to enjoy. We don't really hear much from Mom... I think she was just soaking it all in.
We go back to the rooms to settle in, unpack and get ready for our first evening at sea. As we stop at the top of the hall to help Mom out of the chair, we catch Dad wandering half way down the hall. We yell to him to come back. "Where are you going?" I ask. "I'm looking for my room" he says with all sincerity. I said, "How about the first door on the left with YOUR NAME AND PHOTO on it!" He looks, laughs and says "Oh, when did you do that?" And I respond with "When we first came to the rooms and I showed it to you as we were leaving and you said 'isn't that neat!', that's when!" I swear, just shoot me now! An announcement is made about the rough seas coming up and I'm worried that this will ruin the trip for them. Nope. They tough it out while James and I manage to take the wrong type of dramamine (sp?) which made us drowsy!
We miss the tree lighting ceremony but did see the Golden Mickeys. I made a plan to see all the shows because I spent my last cruise in the lounge before dinner. I didn't want to miss them again. Dinner was at Parrot Cay where I had the lamb. It was faboo! The wait staff was Nicole from Germany and Edwin from Thailand. My Dad fell in love with Nicole! He spent several years in Germany while serving in the Army. My two oldest sisters were born there. Both Nicole and Edwin did a spectacular job taking care of my parents dietary needs. They made sure Mom had something good to eat beside her usual steak or chicken and baked potato. We were usually the first ones in and the last ones out because my parents ate so slow. Plus, father wouldn't stop talking to Nicole. As we were leaving, He said "I hope to see you again soon". I explained to him (again) that they will be with us the entire cruise. He said "Oh good, I hope we get to sit in her section!" He just doesn't get it. This will not be the last time I have to tell him this!
James and I wanted to go do Match your mate. We saw it on our last cruise and it was hysterical. There was this older couple from Britain... something about bending over a tractor wheel in a garden shed... I so wanted to participate, but just to see it again would have been great! Unfortunately for me, my time was up. I'm on a pill that causes drowsiness and I've been up since 4 a.m. I am done for the day!

Sorry this is taking so long. I have been having a lot of lower back pain and I find it difficult to sit at the computer for more than 15 to 20 minutes.

Our day at Nassau was a bit boring. We decided to stay on the ship instead of touring Nassau. We did our own thing for the morning hours and then met up for lunch in Triton's. I love the food on the ship and I felt bad for my parents, who couldn't just order from the menu and enjoy the different foods. My mom has to be very careful about what she eats due to her allergies. Dad, on the other hand, has lost all of his teeth and most of his taste buds. I just find it ironic because these are the people who taught me to enjoy different foods and to always try something unusual because you never know what you're gonna like.
We then saw Bold in 3-D in the W.D. Theatre. I'm sure I heard a few giggles coming from my parents during the show. We then split up, Mom and I going to play Bingo, where we won absolutely NOTHING! James and Dad went to Deck 4 to play shuffleboard and warm up some deck chairs. I LOVE those Deck chairs!
We wasted some time before we had to head back and get dressed up for photo's, Toy Story and Dinner at Triton's. For some reason, my Dad decided to be a spoil sport and he was refusing to get in line for photo's with Mickey. If I came home from this trip without photo's of my parents, my sisters would have killed me. I had to put my foot down and get a little gruff with him and told him in no uncertain terms to "Get in a freakin' line!" I will be posting that photo soon!
As we were going from Deck 4 to Deck 3, we put Mom and Dad on the elevator. Being that it was pretty full, James and I decided to go down one level by stairs. I told them "Go down one level, we'll meet you!" Well, we go down one level and we wait and wait and wait. No parents. We finally hear a ding from the elevators all the way to the right and here they come, sans wheelchair. "Where did you go and where is your chair?" James asks. "We went to level one, didn't know where we were, dumped the chair and got back on the elevators." says Mom. So I start walking them to the restaurant while James goes down to level one to find their chair among the spare Disney chairs. He gets tired of waiting for an elevator so he hikes up two flights of stairs with a wheelchair on his back.
Of course as we were heading to dinner, Dad asked if we could sit in Nicole's section. "Yes Dad, we will sit in Nicole's section!"
After Dinner, Mom called it a day while we took Dad down to Wavebands to see Michael Harrison. He was great! I hope everyone got a chance to see one of his shows. We certainly enjoyed him.
After the show we dumped Dad off at his room and ended the day on a good note.
Oh, I forgot to mention that on our first day, both Me and Mom forgot to take the do not disturb signs off our doors so we both missed out on our towel animals. Our second night we were greeted by an elephant in Mom's room and a puppy in ours.

Oh, let me be
On Castaway Cay
Where the Wonder can take me away
The sun, the sand, the sound of a calypso band
I wish I could stay more than a day...

It's my favorite island!
We have a nice casual breakfast before heading ashore. I have so much scheduled today. I hope we don't wear ourselves out.

Disney has these wonderful island taxi's that help those who can't walk long distances. We took advantage of these for my parents to help them get around the island without their wheelchair.
Our first event is the Jet ski eco-tour. I'm a little concerned about my parents doing this, but they said they could handle it. We do the paperwork and listen to the safety speech before stepping on to the jet ski's. None of us have ever done this so there is some apprehension on top of the excitement. I tell the guides that my parents may be a little slow but they assure me that there will be someone to watch them if they need help.
As we head out, my wonderful husband's driving is a little shaky but he seems to be getting the hang of it. We start out slow and I have the ability to hold on tight with one hand as I take overhead photo's and an unexplained video with the other. Most of the photos don't really turn out that well, but the video managed to get a shot of my parents as they flew by us in a huge plume of water.
Flyingby.png

In the mean time, I am squeezing so tight, my nails are digging into the palms of my hands, my face buried into my husbands back, begging him to slow down. When we finally catch up to the rest of the group, I notice my parents are happy and enjoying themselves. We listen to a little bit of local history before heading to spot #2. Everyone else flies off while I am screaming for James to slow down. I am freaking out on the back of this jet ski and all I can think of is how soon I can get off. We are going so slow that they finally send a rescue boat out for us. The guy on the boat asks if we are having engine trouble. James says "No, it's my wife." At this point, I'm thinking I could jump off, swim to the boat and let James finish the tour. I am crying, shaking and just generally freaking out. So the guide just tells us to take it in. I felt bad for James because I cut his ride short. I was hoping there would be time for him to drop me off and head back out and catch up with the rest of the group. As we are near the ship and I can see the shore, I said I would jump off here and swim back... I just wanted OFF! No, James said he would take me in. By the time we got to the shore I was a terrible mess. I have had anxiety attacks before, usually caused by spiders, but nothing like this. I like being on the water. I have tried water skiing (with little success), I ride horses. Apparently, I don't like jet ski's.
My parents cruise in with the rest of the group. They are having a blast. My dad exclaims that he would like to do that again. I, on the other hand, am still shaking like a leaf. At least I've stopped crying like an idiot! As we help the old ones of the jet ski, we notice two minnows in the footwell. Not only did my father blow us out of the water, he apparently took out two fish as well. On our next cruise I will make sure James gets another opportunity to do this. I may join him on my own jet ski where I have complete control, but I have two years to build up the nerve. I may just do the para sailing that I missed out on two years ago due to high winds.
A side note from James: We NEVER got over 2 on the speedometer, on a scale of 10!
We then head down to Serenity bay for a fabulous lunch of grilled steak and veg. I think there were other cuts of meat, but I was done with the huge slice of steak on my plate. I even tried to enjoy a small cup of ice cream and a chocolate chip cookie, but both ended up in the trash. While James sat with my parents, waiting for them to finish their lunch (remember, slow eaters) I went to get a float from Devon with the large shoulders from South Africa (WOW). I piddled about in the water for about 15 minutes before the rest of the family arrived. I then took my mom out into the water. I pulled her around on the float as she muttered "it's cold, it's cold, it's cold". Oh, Mother...It's NOT that cold! What a good daughter am I!
James and I decide to take the bike tour around the island while Mom and Dad lounge on the beach. When we get to the bike rental shack, they inform us that we were scheduled for the stingray adventure at this time. I explained that the parents were pooped and we had so much to do that we were running out of time. We would rather do the bike tour than the stingrays. Warning to first timers on C.C. Be careful how much you schedule. Unless you are doing a double dip, there is so much to do and not enough time. Any way, the bike tour was nice. The trail was level, smooth and very easy to do, even if you're slightly out of shape as we are. The bikes are very comfortable and adjustable to fit you. Half way down the path is an elevation platform that allows you to get a good view of the island, including the ship.
On our way back, we stopped by Serenity bay to see the folks. We told them that we were heading back and we would meet them by the shops if they wanted to get some shopping done. I told them to catch the shuttle and get off at the next stop, we will be right behind them. The tram comes, they get on, we petal right behind them all the way down the runway. The tram cuts down the tram path, we go to the right to turn the bikes in. We walk over to the shops to await their arrival... we wait...we wait...we wait. My parents have developed the gift of magically disappearing from sight in a matter of seconds. We decide to wait for them instead of going off to look for them, which was a good idea because about 15 minutes later they show up. I ask them where they went and they explained that they thought they would get off at the next stop (I don't know why!) but the tram turned around and went back to Serenity bay. So they stayed on until they came back to the first stop. This is why we felt it was necessary for them to have babysitters when they went on their cruise.
We did some shopping, getting a little something for the sisters and of course, ourselves. James and I got that huge beach blanket/towel with Mickey and Minnie on it. LOVE IT! We decide to call it a day and arrange for an island taxi to take the folks back to the boat as James and I choose to walk back, enjoying a moment to ourselves as we waste the last few shots on the camera and reflect on the memories and plan our next visit.
We get back on the ship in time to shower and dress for our Castaway Cay club meet. Clayton did his little dance and showed some interesting clips of the christening and inaugural cruises of each ship. We didn't win any clocks or whatever else they were giving away, but it was nice to meet some of the crew and swap howdy's with a few other guests.
Tonight is Palo night which I have been looking forward to for the last few months. For the second cruise in a row, we are missing Pirate night. I have been ordered to skip Palo's on our next cruise.
Brendan and the Palo staff bent over backward to fix something wonderful for my mother. I believe she had the Filet Mignon. I had the monk fish and a side of mushroom risotto. Oh my word, it was faboo! I never had monk fish before and it was awesome. They call it the poor man's lobster. It was sweet and buttery and, in my opinion, much better than lobster. I really didn't care what everyone else was having because I was too much into my own dish. I absolutely LOVE Palo's.
After dinner, we send the parents back to the cabin to change clothes and rest before the pirate party. If anything, I wanted my parents to see the fireworks. On the way back, I stopped by Triton's to see if I could get our pirate bandanna's. I was greeted by Edwin who came running over with a tray of dishes in his hand to see if he could help me. As he went off to get my stuff, Putra, our head waiter came by. Edwin returned and both tried to convince me to join them for dessert. No thanks, I say. We are stuffed!
James and I manage to get in a few photo ops while there were no lines. We then head to the Cadillac lounge for a couple of drinks and to promise each other we will never vacation with relatives again. As we leave the lounge, we use a house phone to call the parents to meet us on deck 10 for the fireworks. There is no answer, so we presume they have already left. We head upstairs to find them wandering around, catching them just in time to see the fireworks. Although the show is nice, I wasn't much into the dancing and stuff, but I would really hate to miss the fireworks at sea. Mom and Dad were really impressed. They thought it would be one or two booms and it would be over. Even though it's not as long as it would be if it were on land, one must admit that it's a pretty good show from a boat!
It's been a long and busy day and we are ready for bed. I stopped in on my parents for a quick chat before turning in and my Mom was disappointed to find that her room steward, Alain had taken her elephant and replaced him with a monkey. As I left, I saw Alain and asked him if it would be possible for him to re-do her elephant the next day. He immediately dropped everything and came back down to her room to make another for her. I thought that was very sweet. My Dad thought I went down and threatened him. Nah, not on DCL!
I head back to my room to be greeted by my exhausted spouse and a pirate monkey. I prep for bed and curl up in my honey's arms, and prepare for one more day. Ah, peace and quiet! A nice end to a wonderful day!

Sounds fun. I wonder why you were scared on the jet ski. They are awesome. At least the ones I've been on. I am surprised that you rode two on one though. I thought everyone got there own on the tour. Is that something you requested? It also cracks me up how your parents seem quit feeble, the way you describe them, yet they were zooming all around. LOL!

I too heard it is hard to fit alot in on the CC day. I think we are jsut going to wing it that day and make no plans for anything. If DD wants to play in the kids club all day, fine, if not we will just play in the water and the bach. She is really wanting to visit a beach. She talks about it alot. LOL!

We had a typical morning. Quality time by ourselves. Breakfast at Beach Blanket Buffet, which I kept calling Topsiders. Now, I'm not one for tomatoes as a whole. I like them IN things, but just not by themselves. James got one for breakfast. It was cut in half and grilled or roasted with what looked like olive oil and some herbs on it. For some reason it looked appealing to me so I thought I'd try a bite. Wow. I was very surprised by the flavor. I had to go get one for myself. Now I'm wanting to make these things at home!

We didn't have a lot scheduled, just a day of relaxing. In the afternoon, The parents went to the towel folding class while James and I went to the galley tour. I found it very interesting. The line was so long that they had to take three large groups. If you have not taken this tour, I would recommend it. We see only a fraction of what our wait staff does during dinner.

After the galley tour, we went up to deck 9 for a snack, then went back to the room to hang out on the verandah. I think that's what Mom and Dad did as well. Being it was a sea day, the pools were crowded and I didn't feel like dealing with the noise and the madness.

We decided to venture out and peruse the shops before catching Dreams. My parents decided to sit out on this show, which was a big mistake. I thought this was the best show by far. I'm glad I got to see the shows this time around.

Dinner was at Animators Pallet, which Dad was kinda looking forward to, since he's seen it on the travel channel show many times. We keep pointing out how the room changes gradually, because if we didn't, I think he would have missed it. Right as Edwin and Nicole announce that they have to go get ready for the show, Dad announces that he has to make a bathroom run. He heads out the door, the show starts, the show ends, Dad comes back! I'm glad I got it on video for him. When Edwin and Nicole come back to the table Dad notices that they've "changed clothes". I just shake my head and remind myself that he's 82 years old!

Again, as we are practically the last ones out, Nicole gives my dad a drawing she did of Tinkerbell. OMG, you'd think someone just presented him with the original Mona Lisa. He is smitten! James and I decide to head up to find a good spot for the Till We Meet Again show. We let Mom and Dad take their time, finishing their desserts and finish chatting with Nicole and Edwin. Before I left, I made sure to give everyone their tips, as I knew my parents would forget. I made sure to give everyone something extra because they bent over backwards to accommodate my parents needs, and it was Christmas.

We all met up on Deck 5, midship for the show. I saw Chip & Dale and Donald & Daisy, which made me decide to get some last minute photo's. Daisy is always the hard one to find, so when we see her we always try to get our pics with her. Surprisingly, the lines were short and quick. We then run over to get Chip & Dale (our faves, next to Mickey and Minnie). First up is James and me. Then Mom and Dad. We take their photo and turn to leave so to get out of the way for the next in line. As I turn back to help my Mom through the crowd, they are still with the Characters and Mom is DANCING with Chip. I'm not sure if I got a picture or not, but if I find it, I'll be sure to post it.
I have certainly learned to not underestimate my parents. Just when you think they've got one foot in the grave, they're kicking dirt in your face and running amok through the cemetery.:confused3

Although we did most of the packing earlier, I still had some last minute things to do in order to get my bags in the hall on time. I really didn't want to carry five bags out the next morning. We dash back to the cabins and I make sure Mom's tags match mine, so they are all delivered to the same spot tomorrow. I did manage to get almost everything packed and out the door. I still ended up with two carry-on bags, James' book bag with all the electronics, camera bag, booze and paperwork for customs. I then had to make sure I had Mom's paperwork, 2 boxes of booze and her carry-on. All is well and we can call it a day. Tomorrow we will be in port. How sad:sad1:

Last night, the Captain made an announcement that he was going to speed things up and get to port early due to heavy fog. I did manage to wake up around 2:30 a.m. to notice the lights of the city as we were coming into the channel. I just shrugged and went back to bed.
I was soon up again, this time at 5 a.m. I just hit the shower and started gathering things and preparing for the long trip home. James was up soon after and with everything ready, we just sat around wasting time. We were hanging out on the verandah, staring at the water and a single dolphin made a brief appearance just below us. We saw her twice, then she disappeared.
As the sun was rising, I was getting a bit antsy. Breakfast wasn't until 7:45 a.m. I take a short walk and decide to head back. I'm even too antsy to walk about.
Finally, it's breakfast time and we gather the old ones, pile Mom and all the carry-on's in the wheel chair and head to Animator's Pallet. Dad hopes he can see Nicole one last time. I shake my head and sigh to myself.
We have a nice breakfast, and I finish the cruise with 2, yes two, chocolate croissants. My fave! James and I sit there while Mom and Dad pick and poke through their last breakfast. I do notice Dad drinking coffee, but it doesn't register until later what he has done. It seems like it takes forever but finally, they are done and we head on out. Oop's Not so fast! Bathroom break! This takes another 20 minutes as everyone takes their turn watching the bags.
Whew! I see the gangway. I'm glad it's over. I'm tired and just ready to be home. At the same time, I'm sad. I don't want to leave. I can't wait to re-book our next cruise.
As we head downstairs to gather our bags, I get a porter and load everything up. As we start to roll, Dad hollers, "what about this one?" I turn around and tell him to leave that one for whomever owns it. I swear, you cannot leave this man unattended. We glide through customs without a hitch. I make a comment to the porter and he said we don't fit the profile. You mean to tell me that an old man and woman in a wheelchair are NOT your typical smugglers??? Knowing my father, he could have bought some Cuban cigars without telling me. Thankfully, I got copies of all his purchases. I would have killed him, otherwise.
I go get the van and load it up. I then have to swing around and get the old ones. James dumped them on a bench and returned the wheelchair. One guard tells me I just have to circle around and go back through. The other guard at the gate tells me I have to pull up front and they have to walk out. I don't think they can do this with all that they were carrying, so I pull over and am yelling at James through the fence to explain my situation. He goes to ask another guard, and he tells James to tell me to show the other guard my KTTW card and they will let me back in. Why didn't the guard just tell me that to begin with. So I circle around again, show them my card and drive on through.
We finally have everyone loaded up and off we go. We drive to the next town for some Florida oranges and a stop at Publix for some Chicago rolls. They don't have these in North Carolina! We also bought a lottery ticket, but we didn't win.:sad2:
On the road again! Surprisingly, we don't get too far before Dad calls for a bathroom break. Back in the van and back on the road. Dad again makes the announcement that he needs another bathroom break. As we pull into the rest area, I ask him why he drank coffee before a long road trip. He says "I had this problem before I drank the coffee!" "So, why would you drink coffee to exacerbate the problem?" I ask. "I don't know. I guess I wasn't thinking!" he says as he hobbles to the bathroom as fast as he can. My spouse suffers from I.B.S. so thankfully, I am prepared for this. I dig through the medical bag to find some pills that would put a stop to this very quickly. It will also put him to sleep for a little while. Maybe we can get somewhere!
After a long drive, a few stops and driver changes, we finally make it home, safe and sound. I am showered and in bed before midnight. I am glad to be in my own bed with my own pillows and my kitty girls beside me. I drift off to sleep dreaming of my next cruise... without the family.

LOL!

My parents are 69 (70 in March) and 82. Mom had a stroke and Dad is just old with bad joints. They cannot walk long distances, but give them a set of wheels or a jet ski apparently, and they are off and running!:rotfl:
The jet ski's can be rented as a single or a double. My Mother can't drive and my Dad shouldn't, but I figured they would be safe enough on the jet ski, since my Dad had always rode motorcycles. I opted to ride with my husband because 1. I thought it would be romantic, 2. I usually drive everywhere and I thought I'd give him the opportunity to be the man and drive us around and 3. I thought I'd try giving up control for once. BIG MISTAKE!:scared1:

LOL! I do alot of the driving here too. DH takes his turns, but alot of times he says he is tired, and just has me drive.

sounds like the trip was fun though.

I have debated overd the years of asking family to go on a trip with us, but I am so independent, that I'm afraid of getting stuck with them the whole time and missing out on what I want. My parents sleep in and lounge alot, while I like to be on the go. Heck my Dh and DD are even to slow for me. LOL!

I knew this was going to be a working vacation. We were here solely as assistants for my parents. We knew we wouldn't be as busy or alone as much as we would have preferred, but that is something you must plan for.

I vacationed several years ago with two sisters and a nephew. I told them that although we were on this vacation together, we were on our own for the most part, except when we had dinner planned. I didn't want fights over getting to the parks too early (Kim likes to be there when the gates open) verses getting there too late (Tammy likes to sleep in). I did everything in my power to keep the peace and we still had a major blow up. This is why I swear never to travel with family again!

I guess it all depends on how your family dynamics are... does everyone get along, are people flexible with schedules, etc. If you are usually the peace keeper, I wouldn't advise it. If everyone is happy-go-lucky, then go for it and have a blast... the more the merrier!

ArmandXG- your TR is a hoot. I have LOL so many times my coworkers are wondering whats going on in my office...oops, need to be quiet and hit the buttons on the calculator a few times so they think I am working! I have til the end of January to get the W-2's mailed!

I can relate to vacationing with family...and friends too! Every couple of years we book a grand villa at DisneyWorld using our DVC points and invite family and friends, first come first serve for free accomodations! In 2004 we took our daughter, my aunt and uncle and my friend and her husband. We all spent a few nights in the cottages at Vero Beach first and then got a 4 bedroom presidental suite at Bonnett Creek at Disney. (but not owned by Disney...its our other 'timeshare') DVC is soooo much better managed but thats another thread.
Anyways, from the moment we stepped into the cottage at Vero Beach my girlfriends husband bi#ched about everything. Since we drove from NC and they all flew in from MA we thought that we would cut down on costs and cook a meal or two. Again bi#ched. There's a few restaurants on site so he went to check it out...came back and bi#ched about the prices...Can't have it both ways!
Did I mention that they did not want to rent a car so we picked them up at MCO after we had just gotton off the Disney Wonder and drove back to Orlando and drove them around the entire time...and he bi#ched about being cramped in the back seat.
Ok so we survived the first few days, off to Disney World...for once they liked the resort until the next morning when we all gathered for breakfast...again bi#ched that the bed was a double and he is use to a queen. At this point my DH was getting really pissed and it caused some friction. By the end of the week he was not even talking to him. I was stressed because of the whole situation too...funny thing is they had done this trip with us in 2002 and we had a blast...not sure what happened but we have not invited them since...
As for my aunt and uncle, we had a blast with them.

Thanks for the laughs!

Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us! I have to go back and study it again, so I can make a little chart of what to expect on our 4 day in May; ie schedule of shows, meals, rotations. I can't wait and thanks again!
