What are you supposed to do? I called 911 and told them immediately that it was not a "human" emergency. A squirrel nest in our eaves broke and the babies fell onto a lower roof. No sign of momma anywhere. They referred me to an animal rescue and they told me what to do. Wait until 8:30 so that Mom has a chance to save her babies. If they are still there, pick them up, put them in a box, wrap them up and keep them until morning. They also gave me the telephone number of a refuge that takes baby squirrels. The thought of climbing out onto a roof and gently placing baby squirrels into a box is :scared1:

Please, if you are reading this, send me pixie dust. If you could also pray that the momma comes and saves the day, I would greatly appreciate it!

Wishing everyone, especially me, a "magical" evening!

I hope she does come back. If not is there someone you can send out on roof for you? If not good luck!!

I'm sure she will desperately try to get them. We had 3 baby squirrels fall from their nest onto our driveway last year. The momma came and got them, but I'm certain they were gone by then:( Even worse, the two adult squirrels fell about two months later and died.:( I loved those squirrels. Hopefully we'll get some smarter ones to move in the neighborhood soon.

Wear garden gloves to pick up the little guys and you'll be fine.
We've rescued a few of the little buggers and they're not hard to raise IF it comes down to that.

I'm hoping the mom comes to get them. They usually DO try, such devoted squirrel mamas they are! LOL

Good luck!

I wasnt supposed to peek, but I did and I snapped a photo, but I cannot figure out how to post it!

Garden gloves! Good idea but I hope that momma comes back!

Look in your yellow pages under headings for pest control. You may find what we have here in SC, which is the Wildlife Rehabilitation rescuers. We have called them out to retrieve a copperhead(DH will not kill ANYTHING!) and attempt to live capture a possibly diseased raccoon. They rescue, rehabilitate, and relocate. Wonderful people. From the raccoon incident, I have found that Animal Control is worthless. Here's the conversation from that, you may find it amusing or disturbing.

6:00 p.m.

Them: Animal Control.
Me: Yes, I live in a heavily wooded area, and have noticed a small raccoon walking around my driveway and backyard for about 3 hours. He is not afraid of my very LARGE Newfoundland who is barking at him from the end of a rope. He walks wobbly and doesn't seem to be afraid of anything. Did I mention he is out in the daylight?? Isn't that unusual for a raccoon?
Them: Yes, it is very unusual. He probably has distemper or rabies.
ME: When can I expect you to come out?
Them: Oh, we don't do anything about wild animals, just if a dog is biting someone or imposing an immediate danger.
Me: What am I supposed to do?
Them: The best thing you can do is get a gun and shoot it.
Me: Excuse me. Shoot it?
Them: Yes, we can't come out.
Me. Excuse me, are you a department of the Police?
Them: Yes.
Me: So as a police officer you are instructing me as a citizen to DISCHARGE A FIREARM IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD?
Them: You said you lived in the country.
Me: No, I said I live in a heavily wooded area.
Them: Oh.
Me: So you can't come out?
Them: No.
Me: Thanks a lot. "click"

Our tax dollars at work.....

So I called the wonderful people at the Wildlife Rehab and a woman came out and set a humane trap.

We had a sad and unsettling ending as after she left I called my neighbors to warn them, especially that their dogs might get the raccoon. They did, killed it, and then their owner-so upset about the dog's injuries-felt all over the dog's saliva covered body to see where the dog was hurt. (not too smart) At the vet's office, she told them about my conversation with Animal Control and they wanted to know who I spoke with, because they should have taken care of it. AND they told my neighbor to get a rabies shot, which she did not.(again, not too smart)

Sorry for the rant, but I want everyone to know about the fools running this so called "Animal Control" department. "To serve and protect" my *ss.

By the way, I think that Police officers are among the bravest and best people in the country. They offer up their lives every day to protect the rest of us. This rant was not meant to offend police officers in general, it is just unfortunate that I had to deal with some of the ones that wouldn't help me. :wave2:

I only called 911 for baby squirrels because it is a Sunday. The lady who answered was very sweet and did not say I should not have called. As a matter of fact she took the time to give me 4 telephone numbers. When she answered the phone I immediately told her that it was a "non" human emergency.

AND, an update, the momma came and rescued all 4 of her babies so I no longer need to climb out on the roof! Whew!

Wishing everyone a "magical" day!

You just made my day by letting us know the momma squirrel came back and rescues them:D (and I'm glad you don't have to climb up after them;) )

:D I'm glad momma squirrel came to get them. :D
