4/24/2010 Med cruise: Friends, Romans, Countrymen lend me your Ears

With so many of us booked with a guarantee status, I'm curious as to how soon we'll receive our cabin assignment. Last time we booked specific inside rooms and they upgraded us to the large porthole oceanview rooms about 30 days out.

Any recent experience as to how far out Disney assigns guarantee cabins?

We are taking the train. I get very very very car sick and the idea of sitting in someone else's car all that time is not for me. (That is the only thing that makes me worried about the Amafali coast :confused3) We also think the girls will like the train the best. I am looking forward to more room and being able to move around on the train.
:confused3

Just a note about the Amalfi coast: the coastal highway that wraps along the cliffs and tunnels overlooking the Med. is a spectacular ride (sometimes a little scary) but something you should not miss. The bus drivers are some of the best in Europe and you should see how they navigate roads that were built in Roman times.I would never try to drive myself just for the difficulty of the hairpin turns and blind tunnels. I would check the train route to see if it goes along the coast or inland not to miss the beautiful views.

It seems amazing...We will hire a driver for the day but I am not looking forward to this...

I will be GREEN the whole time. I am going to try to take the sea sick meds before leaving and HOPE it helps.

It is something that I don't want to miss.

Welcome Corinna and Graham and I'm sorry if I missed anyone else. It's getting crazy here.

We're planning on doing the Chagall Museum in Nice as well, plus the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and just walking around the promenade. That will definitely be one of our lighter days.

Not recent, but in 2008 we were a guarantee six and got our assignments about 45 days out. I was surprised it was so early.

We're also a gty 12 like so many others. Crossing fingers for upgrades for all here! pixiedust:

On the EB TA (which sails April 10), the higher category cabins are getting their upgrades and assignments today. We Cat 12 GTYs are anxiously checking our Castaway Club page to see how much pixie dust was sprinkled our way.

Lynne-

Hoping for LOTS of pixie dust coming your way.

(See, I'm really busy studying my Arabic. I have a presentation due on Wednesday and I haven't even started, plus meeting my tutor tomorrow. I have so given up on the language.)

to all of the new cruisers!! So happy you're all able to join the gang!

Best of luck everyone with your room assignments! Loading lots of pixie dust your way!

Lynne, I forgot to ask...Did anyone on the EBTA get calls for offers of upgrade? Or did most people just get "free" upgrades from their GTY status?

We did on the TA last time. I did call my cell phone carrier ahead of time to find out charges, etc. I think the biggest thing to remember is that you have to be a certain amount of miles away from land. Cell phones will pick up the land towers before the ships satelite will be used. Those can incur HUGE charges. I thought somewhere someone mentioned that internet through your phone is not the same rates as making a call. I am not sure though if you switch to the data. The other idea to consider is if DCL is not using a "European satalite" or one covered under your plan. So many what if's out there. :confused3

Thanks, DH looked at the cost and it's not really worth getting a bundle. We'll use the ships internet if we need to or find a cafe on land. We don't need to check anything urgently, luckily.

I'll keep my fingers crossed - let us know what you get :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay:

Hi everybody we are Emiel and Yvette and we are cruising the Mediterranean together with you!!!!

We are B2B cruisers because we are sailing the EBTA cruise and we decided to book this cruise also, or better we were persuade into this cruise....:cool1::cool1:

We are looking forward to cruise 11 nights with some good friends.

So far nearly all the upgrades have been for people moving to Cats 4 & 5. They started out with (mostly assigned) Cats 10 - 6.

Based on these, my best guess is the next batch will be those going to balconies (6 & 7) from the oceanviews (8 & 9), perhaps even Cat 10s.

Since the first round came out around 3pm ET on Mon, I'm not holding my breath - it could easily be Wed afternoon before they get to the Cat 12s.

I wonder if they don't wait until the next day to see if anybody raises a stink about being moved up from their "selected" cabin.

So, they are "free" upgrades from known-cabin-numbers.

There are some of us on the BTB that have booked day 1 and did not get any upgrade yet. Here is hoping we hear something today. At least this thread is a little slower than the TA one. If you miss one day there - you are lost.
