Exactly what my DD8 has for spelling homework is below. Was discussing this with another mom this afternoon, 1 of us didnt see anything wrong with it, the other thought it was too much. Your thoughts?

Skills: Ending sound /ch/ and ending sound /k/

generalizations for sound of /k/ learn these rules

1. at the end of a one-syllable work, /k/ can be spelled k or ck

2. Use ck at the end of a one-syllable word directly after a single short vowel (duck)

3. Use K after consonant (mark), after a long-vowel sound (smoke) and after two vowels (cheek).

words to learn
block, mark, sunk, cheek, check, brick, crack, speck, strike, spank, thick

generalizations for sounds of /ch/ learn these rules

1. /ch/ can be spelled ch or tch.

2. use tch at the end of a word directly after a single short vowel.

3. use ch at the beginning of a word (chin), after a consonant (lunch) and after two vowels (beach)

words to learn
pinch, bench, ditch, snatch, teach, hatch, blotch, witch, March, couch

words that are exceptions to the rule- to learn
such, much, rich, which, sandwich.

Is this for one week? If so, then I think it's too much. If it's for a period of two or more weeks, then I think it's okay because they're studying word families, which should make it easier.

Sounds like that is too much to absorb for an 8 year old. My son's class breaks it down... one week it's ch... then next week it's sh... then next it's ck... one wee it's i before e or e before i... then the next week it ies instead of y... Then one week it's with e or with e at the end... then next it's double letter or just one letter.... But even for me as a parent.. it's sound a lot.. and it will probably will confuse the child.

This is my 2nd graders spelling list from last week -- meat, seat, clean, please, each, swept, feed, seem, green, deep, sleep, scrubbed, pigsty, polished, scoured. 10 regular words and 5 bonus words. Most of the class does the bonus words.

So do they need to write them so many times for homework? Is this all they have for homework tonight?

Is it just know the rules? Thats not out of the ordinary for 8. My daughter has different style words and she's 8 as well. Her words were things like centennial, organize and such like that.

Do they have to write the rules? Or just know them? Or write the words with the rules?

I'm confused as to what Exactly the students need to do.

That does not sound too bad considering the standards like our schools have. I don't know about your schools but it sounds ok for 3rd grade.

My 2nd grader brought this list home for this week.:
into
today
without
something
become
upon
myself
everybody
everyone
maybe
outside
basketball
homework
skateboard
earthquake
bonus: spider, insect

My DS8's spelling is like this - he gets 9 or 10 words on Mon., then has to alphabetize them and turn in on Tues. Then Tues., Wed. and Thurs. we practice, practice and practice some more. On Friday, the teacher give them a sheet with a story. They read the story together as a class and have to fill in the blanks with the spelling words (The words can be from this week or weeks prior).

I think my DS would be so confused if he had to do your DD's homework.

I guess I don't understand - does she think the list is too long, or that the words are too hard?

My kid's school has jumped around alot on spelling programs the past couple of years. Last year they were using - I think it was the MacMillian program. This year it is different and tied into their literature. In the past, I think they used Saxon.

But regardless, it seems to me that around 20 to 25 words has always been the norm.

That doesn't sound bad. Those words to learn actually seem pretty standard for third grade. The homework does get more involved starting in third grade - consider it "boot camp" for the fourth grade!

Sounds just fine to me. My DD is in 2nd grade, and they have 30 words a week. Last year (1st grade), they had 20 a week.

This is her list for this week:
twice, twenty, betwwen, they, would, any, many, could, should, city, only, where, week, weak, first, sent, cent, mile, seem, see, hugged, hugging, nodded, nodding, skipped, since, those, crown, shout, skipping

My DS is in 3rd grade and that sounds like a bit much!
I don't think what the OP is saying is about the words themselves because just learning how to spell words can be quite easy for most kids. I think the concern was that they are trying to have the kids learn the "rules of spelling" for two totally different sounds at the same time.
OP correct me if I'm wrong...I've been wrong once before ;) :teeth:
I work in a 4th grade class and we take word spellings in groups which are similar in a sense and work on those for a couple of days possibly a week---we would learn the -ch sound spelled -ch and -tch....could be confusing for kids when you try to "cram" in too much....IMHO!!

My son did that in 2nd grade, and the words are too easy for third grade IMO.

Sounds easy to me !

My 3rd grader has 25 spelling words
3 vocabulary words each week.
This week is

Sl in sleep
str in stream
sw in swim

slight
sleeve
sloppy
sliver
slumber
slippery
slender
strain
straight
strike stray
strange
strawberry
instrument
Swiss
sweet
swallow
switch
sweater
swamp
your
you're
very
everybody
won't
inquire : to ask
prompt: on time
transform: to change

We have a hard time each week, she studies for spelling the most. It is her hardest subject !

Okay lemme try to answer the questions in order.

I said- its not too much homework- they work on the rules in class each day, and have until Friday to learn the spelling.

The most important part is learning the rules, if they learn the rules, they can spell the words correctly. This is why their words "go together" each week.

They havent really had spelling before, it's always been done in reading blocks, not in homeroom classes.....DD is way beyond these words, however she doesnt know the rules, so to me, its a good thing to learn the rule not just how to memorize the words.

One thing I hate is memorization.....memorizing how to spell something is great, heck i learned how to spell that way, but at the same time, you have to be able to know the WHY your spelling it a certain way, not just that you are...

No, I don't think it is too much. DD would have loved to have had lists like that when she was in 3rd grade. She had a minimum of 25 words per week.

I think these words are very easy. I would think that most 3rd graders would know how to spell these words without even studying.

When DS's were in 3rd grade they had very similar type lists with at least 25 words and sometimes 30 (usually the extra 5 were bonus words). They frequently had 2 sounds to learn at the same time too, to learn how to differentiate between them.

its not about the words- its about the rules............

I think thats the part that most of the parents who complained after school today forgot....they're trying to teach the kids WHY you spell it a certain way, not to memorize it

It is good for them to learn the rules however I think that most kids may just memorize the rules for the test then forget them. I'm not sure how many 3rd graders will actually remember all those rules, I'm not sure I can remember all the rules of spelling??!!!
