3rd and Final Star Wars Trailer

What was your problem with Clone Wars? It got off to a weak start, but it got much better as it went along.

Got about 90 minutes available?

While the list of technical and logical problems are numerous, I personally take issue with the fact that this entire Army has been commissioned and yet Palpatine still goes through these ridiculous hoops to try and manipulate the senate into using this army to attack the FIRST army he commissioned to attack/embargo Naboo while simultaneously lying to Dooku, the trade Federation, and even Grievous (as we find out in the next movie). Palpatine's actions continually change course and show absolutely zero continuity across the three movies. Every movie they introduce a new bad guy that, in the end, is operating as a satellite with no knowledge of the end game.

When the TLDR of why a movie is so core to the main story that it takes nearly a paragraph just to sort out the basic contradictions.... that's pretty damn bad.

Forget the fact that Lucas can't stage a scene, write dialog, or direct an actor to save his life.

The only way Episode II "gets better" is when your brain shuts down and stops trying to make sense of anything and goes into mindless action mode. I'm guilty of doing it myself, and then wondering why (as I walked out of the theater) I had this nagging feeling that everything was wrong.

The irony is most people will argue the prequels got better as they went along, but the simple truth is each one is forced to build on the fallacies established before it, meaning by the time we get to Episode 3 the reasons and logic for the universe are so friggin convoluted that I would have to make a web chart showing how every single dumb decision and ignored piece of information that Obi Wan, Anakin, Padme, and Yoda/Mace/Jedi Council led to the end game scenario.

Even worse? You can ignore 2.5 movies of illogical decisions and fast forward straight to Anakin's time with Palpatine and the conversations he was with Obi Wan and Mace to see Jedi's at their most ridiculous.

Lucas knew the end game but he didn't know how to build a story arc to get there. So he told a very linear story padded with tons of convenient shenanigans and meaningless dialog. When you have a trilogy that can essentially exist perfectly fine by dropping the first or even second episode... then that is pretty sad. Episode II adds nothing to the Star Wars mythos. A montage of scenes at the beginning of Episode II showing what great friends Anakin and obi Wan have been, and how virtuous Anakin has been would have done more and established more than the entirety of the first two movies.

Now excuse me while I drink a draino cocktail and try to forget all this again.

It seems that Lucas wrote absolutely every word of the script, and he didn't put much thought into anything but just kind of cranked it out. There's a scene in one of those Plinkett reviews where Lucas shows up on Monday morning and says something like, whew, I had to work all weekend to get this scene written, ok let's shoot it. Needless to say, the haste and lack of collaboration shows in the final result.

The guy just became incredibly sloppy. Before the prequels were made it already showed in the re-do of episode IV when Han runs through the dialog with Jabba in the hanger, then meets Greedo and runs through the same dialog again. Or maybe it was Greedo first and then Jabba ... I don't know and I don't care. The point is, sloppy. Not just sloppy, but he's an idiot who vandalized his own immortal, classic movie.

Not that it matters for the upcoming movie. When it comes to the finer plot points and continuity hardly anybody will notice or care ... any more than most people care about the story arc and continuity of James Bond movies. It'll be discussed in millions of words on message boards, but for most people it'll be a "Top Ten Goofs in The Force Awakens" video on youtube.

Honestly...it was 3 of the worst movies ever written.

The entire first movie was to introduce an ineffective army of droids and to have Liam neeson say "anakin skywalker...meet Obiwan kenobi"

That's it...and the worst "love story" story ever told in the second. If he's a kid and erratic, why does Yoda and snakes on a plane put him in charge of security for a doe eyed 22 year old who weighs 110 lbs? Yeah...can't use the crystal ball to "foresee" any trouble there...

But really...since you got me going...

The BIGGEST of the stupids...and just inexcusable...is that obi wan finds a fully armed to the teeth army...made from a guy who shoots people for pay...that was built for a dead, assumed corrupted guy from the elks lodge that is NEVER EXPLAINED!!!!!

Arrrrrgggghhhhh!! (Pirate yell appropriate)

And would a pack of all knowing, extra sensory wizards start asking questions?
Hell no...lets start slapping backs and using them...they must be good, right?

They won't shoot us in the back 10 years later, right?

Jeez...I'm angry like 2002 all over again.

I can remember standing outside at 2 am in the rain in 1999 thinking I wasn't actually awake during the movie...

And outside amc at pleasure island in 2002 just thoroughly angry/disgusted.

George went from pop culture God to the directorial equivalent of a Kardashian...he shoulda stayed on the ranch.

Rumors are flying about where Luke is in these trailers. One of them has Luke being Kylo Ren.

I don't think Luke is Kylo Ren. Is Luke his master? Maybe. I'm of the opinion that Rey and Kylo Ren are brother and sister and are either Han's kids or Luke's kids.

Yes it would...

I think that a certain character is key to this movie while barely appearing in it...

I think the hints are the title and the lightsaber scene in the trailer...

I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a fast one on us and certain characters who appear to be bad guys end up actually fighting on the good side against a greater, unrevealed, threat. (edit: actually, I forgot there has been a name dropped... the guy played by Andy Serkis....) At this point both Phasma and Ren are pretty shrouded in mystery. We don't know their motivations. We assume they are bad guys, but that doesn't mean that Ren is the arch nemesis everyone assumes he is. Just as Vadar had his strings pulled by a higher power, I sincerely doubt we have been exposed to the "real threat" in the current galaxy.

Also, I believe I read that all footage shown so far is from the first 20 min- 1/4 of the film. So it's not surprising that certain characters are currently MIA.

Luke was specifically shown in the second trailer. Hell, he narrated it. So the fact people are pissing their pants over him missing from the third trailer seems silly to me.

Luke SHOULD be reserved in this movie. He was essentially the only Jedi left in the Universe at the end of Ep 6. When you have a movie focusing on this new order rising, a scavenging kid, a rogue storm trooper, and an x-wing pilot... WHY would he be around? Luke would be out dealing with planetary leaders, or possibly training new Jedi, or even in hiding if the New Order has any designs on destroying him. He's not going to be casually hanging out with Solo or dumpster diving with Rey.

Jedi should be rare. It should be a big deal when one shows up. Ergo: it will be a big deal when Luke shows up, and Abrams/Disney KNOWS that is the money shot. Why pepper him into the trailers? A trailer is designed to get people to see the movie. Is there someone out there who isn't currently going to go see it but would if they explicitly showed Luke?

As far as that big rumor goes, I would bet money against it. This isn't Lucas we are dealing with and his incessant need to "rhyme" with the older movies. It is way too predictable to have Luke follow the exact same path as his father. Besides, pretend for a moment that Luke has turned, or is dead, or any of that. Who would train a new Jedi? Unless they introduce yet another Jedi hermit that everyone conveniently forgot about during Ep 1-6, then Luke HAS to be around (as a Jedi) in order to 'pass the torch' if you will. If Lucas was writing it then Rey or Finn or someone could just stumble across Yoda's Big Book of Jedi Powers and a vial of midichlorians and BAM, instant spinning laser sword fights would be had by all. But it's not George. And rather then getting "dense" scenes with 200 Jedi flipping around like lunatics and using lightsabers to do everything from popping open soda cans to giving haircuts, these new movies are going to be much more reserved and actually portray Jedi/lightsabers as the rare treat they actually were before.

If there is any major criticism about Force Awakens, I predict it will be this:
We didn't see Luke \ Light saber \ a Jedi of any kind until the final moments. They have 2 more movies in this main trilogy and who knows how many spin off movies. I'd bet major money that they don't play many chips in this film and instead hold their hand for round 2/3. You can quote me on all this in December ;)

edit:
Much has been made of Ren holding Vadar's mask in the trailer and saying he is going to finish what Vadar started. That begs the question, what exactly did Vadar start? Vadar took orders for 3 movies and then got sick of watching the Emperor be a prick and tossed him into the recycling bin. Nothing he did in those movies seemed to be his own plan. And in the first three episodes he just whines about crap all the time and is easily manipulated by a Joseph Lieberman look alike.

The ONE thing Vadar reveals that seems to be his own thought is when he reveals who he is to Luke and asks him to join him in ruling the universe. It's going to take some flashbacks or creative editing to convince me that Vadar had some master plan that was never revealed to anyone.

Basically there's a freaky Dark Side Cult that essentially worships Vader. That's why they revere the mask. They're looking for the source of the dark side somewhere on the outer fringes of the galaxy so they can wield that power and take over everything once and for all.

Ren is a disciple of that belief system supposedly, and they may or may not have found the source.

I know about the whole Knights of Ren thing. I just don't feel that the Vadar worship adequately describes/motivates their intentions based solely on Vadar's actions/words from episodes 4-6. I was pointing out that he was a pawn much more than a driving antagonist.

I see where you'd say that he's not the top dog, that's almost a given. There's always two at the very least. I'm not certain there's much more to them besides total domination, enslavement of the masses, and wielding dark side power to the extremes. They're certainly not the racists they were in IV-VI.

EU is completely rejected...thank god

Only the September released book "aftermath" has been given Disney/lucasfilm backing

Actually, every book published starting with "A New Dawn" is new canon. Aftermath is just the first new post ROTJ book. Well, that and the Shattered Empire comic miniseries.

Also word of Vader's ruthless nature traveled building him up as the main guy. While we know he was a puppet, characters in the movies/comics/books thought he was the mastermind. So with that, it would make some sense for Kylo Ren to look up to him. As far as they are concerned, Vader was the face of the Empire. Not necessarily the emperor.

To clarify, the following things are now considered canon:

The movies.
The Clone Wars tv show. (including some stories that weren't finished in season 6 but were released as-is)
Star Wars: Rebels
Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic miniseries
Any book, short story, or comic published since September 2014.

Honestly...I really don't care. That's where everything went off the rails...all the crazy "slap a Star Wars label on it" in the 90's.

I'm just thinking the movies count and go from there. I consider rebels to stand alone...etc...etc...etc.

I loved the Thrawne trilogy and the Dark Empire comic miniseries, but then things got out of hand, like you said.
