So, yesterday, I bought a 3D TV - something I really didn't think I would do. I don't really get excited by 3D movies. But this one was $600 off at Costco - a clearance model, I was told, tho they don't mark them as clearance at Costco.
I was just really impressed by the 2D picture, and it had all the HDMI / other ins and outs I wanted.

It's a 46" Sony Bravia. And it has built in wireless. I was really shocked at how many of these big TVs did not have internet built in. Even some of the $2000 55" TVs didn't have it. Internet stuff was a MIST HAVE for me as I love Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Pandora, to a lesser degree.

Anyway, what's your take on 3D TV?

BTW, the forum switched the thread title to lower case, not me... LOL

I don't have a 3d television yet but was wondering how people liked them so far.
How do you like yours? Does everything come in 3d as long as you have the 3d goggles to wear? Or is it only movies that are specified as 3d?

We don't have it set up. It is to be installed in our new home when we move in. Verizon told us to have the TVs we want with FIOS on site and ready for installation, so we bought it 2 weeks before it will be needed.

The box says it can "Upconvert" some 2D content.... I doubt that this will really work.

We have that same TV and we love it. The clarity is beautiful and we love it on the 2D mode. Right now there isn't a lot of 3D programming now but what they do have is spectacular. I feel like I am in the picture.

I bought it for my DBF for Christmas he is a gadget guy and loves all the newest technology. He said it was worth it for the clarity on the regular TV.

Enjoy!!!

We love ours! Alice in Wonderland is breathtaking!

One minor bug... the glasses cost a fortune here and Avatar 3D is only available either to Panasonic customers or via eBay, where it fetches upwards of £100!

Still, awesome buy.

I find 3D TVs to be utterly ridiculous. I don't understand the need for it. I have a perfectly good LCD TV that has wonderful picture. I don't like the idea of needing to wear goggles to watch TV in my own living room. Kind of silly.. and ridiculous. No need to spend all that money on something, especially when it's still in the early stages of development. Think about the first iPods that came out not even that long ago.. they are dinosaurs. The new iPods out now are 100% better. Just seems like a giant waste of money to me.

But you CAN watch in 2D or 3D if available... and if you go to 3D movies and enjoy them, it is probably cool... I guess you don't enjoy 3D even at the movies?

You don't HAVE to watch stuff in 3D. It is just an option.

And EVERYTHING technology has early versions. I know that and will probably get another 3D TV in 5 - 6 years when they are even better.

Don't have one and don't intend on buying one. My son gets horrible headaches from watching 3D so we'd never be able to use it even if we wanted to.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the 3D at the movies. When we saw Avatar, I had the worst headache!!

Are any channels offering 3D options yet? I feel so behind..

Over in the UK Sky are offering a 3D channel as part of their Sky + HD package.

3DTV is mixed for me. Mostly I enjoy it thoroughly but sometimes it's to much. I remember watching Tron at the cinema with 3D glasses and feeling light headed. Conversely, I watched Bolt in 3D and adored it!

I one giant step behind you. I haven't been able to justify a flat screen TV of any sort. My good old 27" RCA tube TVs are doing just fine.
Of course, the fact that my wife and I work in TV and know how much programming really isn't even HD may be a factor.
I certainly will upgrade when when of my TV's dies, but even the 30 year old one is going strong.

I have no desire to buy a 3D TV. I don't like 3D. I avoid it at theaters and would even if they didn't try to get extra money out of you. I think in many cases the plot and story of the movie is an after thought because they have 3D. Effects (3D, explosions, car chases, whatever) should enhance a story, not replace it.

I saw both Alice in Wonderland and Avatar in 2D and Alice was still good. Avatar, not so much. It was the epitome of sacrificing a good story because they have good effects IMO and I'm not interested.

3D is simply a feature. If you're purchasing a new tv, 3D capability is something to consider, but it's not a reason to go out and buy a new tv. I always thought it'd be cool to have a tv with "picture-in-picture". I bought a new tv about 5 years ago that I "think" has the feature, but have never used it. I suspect that's how the 3D feature will play out for some. You can bet that if 3D tv does succeed, it will be when the glasses are no longer required.
Of course the current 3D tvs aren't likely to be compatible with that.:happytv:

That last thing I saw in 3 D was Jaws 3 in 3 D. no desire for it.

3D is kind of limited by the content available right now. From what I have heard that is Sports, Kids Movies, and of coarse...porn...lol. This will slowly expand to more general content too.
imo things like the nintendo 3ds are cool for starters, maybe in the near future you will get a glasses free 3d cell phone/ipod touch type device. Right now people that have a 3d tv might have 3-4 pairs of glasses on average. What happens when you have 5-10 friends over to watch the superbowl/stanley cup? You would need 1-2k in glasses for all your friends and that does not make sense to me.

To be clear, I didn't go buy a TV just to have 3D. We plan to leave our TV that is wall mounted in our bedroom behind when we move. So that left us one TV short. I'll put our family room TV in our bedroom after we move, and the new 3D TV in the family room. The differences between this TV and the other one I considered were

1. The one I bought is 3D, the other was not
2. This TV is 4" smaller than the other
3. This TV was $100 more
4. The other TV did not have wireless built in
5. And this TV looked better in 2D than the other.

#5 is the clincher. It isn't that 3D televisions cost more than 2D televisions - rather the better (and consequently higher-priced) televisions simply have 3D as one of many additional features. Buy the television for what it is; enjoy the 3D, to the extent you care to, as a bonus.

We are buying a new 3D TV from Costco too. I don't remember which one (my husband is the TV guy), but we aren't getting it because of the 3D either. It just happened to be the one with the best picture.

If it's a 46" Sony, then it will be... I told my wife before I left to get a TV that I had no intentions of getting a 3D TV. But this TV's 2D picture blew me away.

BTW, to those who buy at Costco, they double the manufacturer's warranty for free, up to a total of two years.
