Seriously? I guess stuff where you live is waaaaaaay more expensive than here. I could have bought an entire weeks worth of groceries for $50 w/o using coupons including several cuts of meat. My budget for the next 2 weeks of food is $120. He spent over half of that on "party supplies" (minus the detergent and cat food). BTW, I didn't "send him out", he offered to go so he could get out of cleaning the house for HIS family that is coming to visit. I guess we are eating ramen noodles and PB until I get paid again. Hope his family enjoys the party.
Yes, I'm serious. I spend twice that on a week's worth of groceries for two people. $50 for "party supplies" would be nothing in my book. I don't go for cheap food when I'm entertaining.

Who made the grocery list and why are you upset with him when he stuck to the list? If you wanted very specific items and sizes, then you should have specified them. If you didn't want him to exceed a certain dollar amount for any item, then you should have included that in your list. I can never understand women who complain that their husbands don't help out when they're expecting guests but then rip into them when they do help out and it's not up to the wife's standards. The poor guys just can't win.

Sounds to me like you resent having to entertain his family.

OK. Here goes.

My total would have been $46 plus tax. And, yes, those are regular not on super sale prices for our area.

You should have been more specific in what you wanted. You need to tell him the brand and quantity you want and the price you are willing to pay if you are going to be upset when he doesn't get the right thing. If he does not normally do the shopping he has no way to know.
You would really have skipped the soda and pie for your party because it cost $3.76 more than you think it should? You didn't say how many people will be there but is one pack of cocktail wieners enough for several people? If so save the other two packs and eat them this week. And I would send him back to the store to exchange the cat food if your cat really wont eat it. (Might as well return the extra turkey pan and bleach at the same time.)
Sorry OP. I hope it works out for you and your not stuck eating Ramen!

I'd take the cat food back since switching food for pets can cause tummy issues, but the rest you can incorporate into your grocery/household budget for the next week. The little weiners will freeze.

When I saw your list it, he probably spent what I would have spent on the exact same stuff, and yes things are more expensive here. I spend $18 on just laundry detergent. When he bought the more expensive detergent did he get the bigger size? Because if you go by the unit price, the larger package is actually cheaper per unit than the smaller package.

Typically when DH goes to the store he's a bargain hunter but I shop brand specific on certain things. Like now, I just sent him to the store and I specifically asked for Stop and Shop brand raisin oatmeal, Poland Springs water bottle, and Welch's grape jam.

Last week he honestly told me that the store had run out of yoghurt (which I'm pretty sure has never happened in the history of grocery stores).

It happens here all the time. When Chobani is on sale 10 for $10 they can't keep it in stock. I have to buy it at the little local IGA and they always have a limit of 5 per customer per day when it's on sale.

I am confused like the rest...

If specific brands or prices were required, then that should have been clearly spelled out on a provided list.

We can't get mad at people for doing what we asked, but not exactly how we asked, when clear parameters weren't spelled out in regards to completing that grocery list.

Sorry OP is under budget, but if she now needs to eat ramen noodles and peanut butter, than I'm not sure why she is spending money on empty calorie, expensive foods such as wieners and chips in the first place? And I'm honestly not trying to be sarcastic at all, but maybe she could have tweaked the list a bit even. It just seems like a very specific price point was needed to complete this list, yet OP didn't provide those instructions at all.

Me thinks there may be more at play here, as there seems to be a bit of resentment in having to entertain the hubby's family in the first place, since this party cost way more than the OP has planned for.

Hopefully OP has a successful party! Tiger

Okay, did your DH know that if the price was over X not to buy it?
You said cherry & apple pie. Now, in my world, no life-loving DH would come home with no pies for a holiday meal when it was clearly on the list. Yeah, that wouldn't happen. Would you rather have had NO pies??? I think your DH did an ok job. Ya gotta expect a guy to get a little extra of the munchie stuff, and maybe he bought the bleach 'cause his whites aren't white enough?

With a food budget like that, I simply do not understand why you weren't exacting on your shopping list. Unless he shops all the time with you, he probably doesn't know what you buy.

You needed name brands and prices on that list.

And, yes, those are regular not on super sale prices for our area.

But they are specific types and sizes. It seems that you do the shopping in your house, as do I. You and I know the typical prices. DH and your DH do not. If we need them to get specific things, we need to write it down for them.

:) And they are constantly running out of "my" raspberry yogurt at Trader Joes. Yogurt is tricky for us, because if you're not careful it has HFCS and/or gelatin in it, and we can't/don't eat those things. So our yogurt choices are small! And raspberry organic lowfat Trader Joes brand yogurt is in high demand at our local TJ. (and I don't like their peach yogurt, so I go home without yogurt on those days) I mix it in with my Fage 0%. :)

My DH's family is coming tomorrow for a Christmas get together.

Next to the pies you wrote "$5 or I walk away". YOu really would NOT buy pies when you're having a family gathering? I guess if you have other desserts that would be fine, but there's no way to know that. I mean, if you're getting two, that sounds like those are the desserts. But over $2 you would, possibly, not have dessert for a family gathering?

:rotfl2:.
I thought something similar. I would have been waaaayyy more upset if dh went to the store to get the supplies for a family party and came back with nothing for dessert. :rotfl:

I can hear the conversation. And it would start with a very tense "So what exactly am I supposed to feed these people?" lol.

I can understand your frustration, but I can also see where the confusion could occur. My husband would have done a similar job with a similar list. For him, I need to tell him exact quantities. Otherwise, he'll come home with way more than we need. It took a long time to convince him that at our store, just because the sale is 10 for $10, doesn't mean he has to buy 10 of everything! If I told him to buy cheese, he'd come home with a 5 lb. bag of cheese "because in the long run it's cheaper per pound" - except that it ends up wasted when it goes bad before it's all used. If we were having a party and I put "soda" on the list without specifying a number of bottles, we'd have enough soda to last a year. For a party, he'd buy even more. Years ago, when he moved in with me, he brought with him a refrigerator box full of Ramen noodles and a 50 lb. bag of rice - like I said, he's a big believer in buying in bulk. With a little trial and error (frustrating at the time), he now does the majority of the shopping and does a better job than me at sticking to the list (I'm the one now who impulse buys, he sticks to the list).

I RARELY send DH to the grocery store. His problem is that if I need a box of rice, he gets the gigantic size when I am needing a regular box. He always buys huge amounts of things. He also adds way too much junk food to the shopping cart...so I have just decided its not worth it to send him...and I do it myself (even for one or two items).
DD22 just got married in July. She sent her DH out for some meds and he came back with syrups instead of pills. She told him she was an adult and didnt need liqued meds like kids take...and told me she didnt know she needed to be SO specific when telling her DH what to pick up at the store. I told her welcome to the wives club:rotfl2:

For the record, I did not fuss at him or anything. I just said "Um, how did that cost so much?" He looked at the receipt and couldn't believe himself how much he paid for stuff. "What? Bleach was $4?!" "I thought the pies were $4." So, see, he wasn't paying attention when he put the stuff in the cart, and he wasn't paying attention when it was rung up. They could have charged him $50 for a pie and he wouldn't have noticed.

Oh, and also, HE wanted the pies. I couldn't care less. There will be other dessert there.

I know one thing... If I went to the store with a list from my wife and came home perfectly with everything on that list and later sat down at the computer and found a post like this, I would promptly stand up, walk out to the kitchen, open all packages I purchased, and dump them in the garbage. There you go, you go do the shopping!

And I don't believe a word of anyone who constantly claims they spend $50/week on groceries unless they don't count the 5 days of eating out that they do. I couldn't feed my family Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 7 days for $50. $50 for a family of 4 would be $0.60 per person per meal. I've seen enough folks post the $50/week with even more than 4 people in the family. You're not getting a meal for 60 cents.

We spend about $70.00/week on groceries but hardly eat out. (if we do it's on Groupon) We have a Soda Stream for beverages. Some weeks I don't even go grocery shopping. My pantry is full of things like grains, beans, and rice. My freezer is stocked with soups, meats, etc.., I don't buy processed foods for the most part and make a at home meal most days of the week. My bill is higher if I have to buy meat of course. So my point is, it's possible :rolleyes1 I could see why it would be upsetting to see a high bill when you work so hard to keep things within a reasonable budget. My hubby and I get into the same argument. I say "If you want things done right, do them yourself."

Wow, bit of a temper? That is quite an over the top reaction to a few simple words of surprise from a spouse. She didn't call him any names, she never said she wished he hadn't gone, she never said he was incapable. She simply shared that she thought that was more than the total should have been for what she requested. If that's all it takes to set you off, then yeah, I hope your wife never does post anything about you. :(

For the record, OP ~ I could have gotten every single thing on your list for less than $35 easily, so I see your point.
And my husband doesn't look at prices at all when he shops...it drives me crazy, but I try to keep it to myself. He surprised the kids with a new Xbox this year, and I knew I could have gotten a deal that would have been 40% less than what he paid, but he was so proud of himself. :headache:

little wieners (for appetizers in the crock pot) ~ $3 here
1 bag of tortilla chips ~ $1 bag (for the restaurant style Kroger ones, and they are good!)
juice $2 name brand
soda $4 at the most for a 12 pack or 4 2L (always some pop for $1/2L here)
laundry detergent $3-5 name brand, depending on the week
cat food $3 name brand
pan for the turkey to cook in $1.50
apple pie $5 name brand
cherry pie $5 name brand
couple cans of soup $1.50
toothpaste $2 name brand

$3 for laundry detergent? Wow, that's inexpensive!

Take the bleach, extra turkey pan, Hawaiian punch and the cat food back to the store. Freeze any leftover wienies and put the extra soup in your pantry.

You would have preferred to have no pies and no sodas for your guests? My husband would have bought the pies if they were on the list and he wouldn't have known not to pay $6 instead of $5. Nor would he have thought the sodas were excessively priced and, if he did, he still would have bought them because guests were coming. Would you have offered them only plain water to drink? I think I am kind of siding with your husband here. Sure, he could have paid more attention to the proper brand of cat food and he probably should have foregone the extra turkey pan and the bleach but he bought everything you put on the list.

The holidays are expensive. I wouldn't host family if my food budget was tight. I like to feed my guests better food for the holiday meal than our standard everyday fare. To each their own I guess.
