this evening while playing at a city playground. No, they were not those pesky cocker spaniels. Believe it or not it was by pit bulls.

Wow, I hope he is okay, do you know his status? Will the owners be charged with dogs at large?

It was a quick new release in the Pittsburgh on line news. Taken to the hospital, condition unknown. It hurts me to see children suffer.

This is probably the 3rd pitbull attack in Pittsburgh in as many months. I didn't see the details of this one but remember hearing about at least a couple others recently.

I'm certainly not condoning these dogs behavior or the owners inability to be a responsible dog owner, but it seems to me, if it was a pesky cocker spaniel , the whole story probably wouldn't have even been on the news.

Haven't heard a status, hope the boy is OK. I hate to hear about anything that hurts a child.

Groups of cocker spaniels usually don't go around hunting humans, it seems pit bulls do on occasion.

We probably would never know because the Cocker Spaniels wouldn't make the news. :rolleyes1

But like I said there seems to be an unusual amount of dog attacks lately in this area. No matter what the breed , its sad to hear about.

I bet the owners are going to say they are wonderful dogs, play with kids and never nipped at anyone before.:sad2: Plus we'll get all the pit bull defenders on this thread soon saying not the dogs but the owners.

The second the owners start chewing victims to death and mauling innocent passersby, I'll buy that argument. :rolleyes1

My aunt was attacked by a client's pit a few months ago. They said the same. 158 stitiches. And she will need skin grafts.

And, believe it or not, it didn't make the news. The owners agreed to put the dog down.

I am not a defender of pitbulls- I never allowed my kids to be near them.

I have to say however, I have met PLENTY of nasty cockers. My friends mil had 2 and if they were licking the dishes in the dishwasher, you couldn't even WALK by them. They are not a breed I would recommend for someone with small kids- I find them quick to be "nippy". And I also want to say, ALL dogs are "pack animals" meaning if left to their own devices, they will pack up- it's just the way they are wired.

I have one of those! I didn't talk to the vet before I got it but when I broughtit in for his first shots etc the vet told me that they are unpredictable and not good dogs to have if you have kids---great....and he was right! I would never ever recommend pit bulls or cocker spaniels as pets!

I would never own a dog that could kill me if it decided to...thats why I have a 16 pound Jack Russell Terrier... even if he were to decide to attack me (he never has--and he's nine)...He physically couldn't do it.

I actually was told I could not adopt a 9 week old cocker spaniel from the pound because the person interviewing me asked if I planned on having babies and I said yes. She said that though it doesn't get publicized like "large" breeds, cocker spaniels are one of the leading dogs bite numbers, especially to children.

I thought it was a stupid rule until I moved into my townhouse shortly after, and I met the demon cocker next door. Holy moly was that thing unpredictable! One second its loving on you, the next biting you. It sent the owners' 20 year old to the hospital for an overnight stay.

I was attacked by a poodle when I was little. The thing chomped down on my leg and wouldn't let go. Poor training for any dog will cause attacks to happen.

Not all pit bull owners are drug dealers but it seems most drug dealers own pit bulls.

More details:

Police said two pit-bulls attacked 4-year-old Kiante Clark, leaving him seriously injured.
"Kiante's whole underam is gone...he has a hole right here in the side, the back of his leg are bit up to his private part, on the side of his head is bit up," said Tawana Clark, Kiante's mother.
Some good samaritans helped save Clark from the attack.

Sadly, it sounds pretty serious. Another report:

A 4-year-old boy was mauled by two pit bulls at a playground in the Marshall-Shadeland section of Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The boy was attacked at a playground at Marshall and California avenues around 6:20 p.m. Two women who were driving by saw the attack and pulled over to help the boy. One woman shielded the boy while the other ran the dogs off.

Police said the boy was taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for treatment of bites to his legs and arms. Police said the dogs' owner came to the playground shortly after the boy was attacked, put the dogs on leashes and attempted to take them home. She was stopped and officials with Animal Control took the dogs into custody.

Questions:

1) Where was the mom of this 3/4 year old boy when the attack occurred?

2) Did the owner actually try to evade responsibility by trying to take the dogs home?

3) While any dogs can attack, would other breeds have caused this much injury?

Poor little boy...poor dogs...poor situation.

I am an absolute defender of pitbull...and it is a shame that they get such a bad rep, however I DO understand why people feel negatively about them. So I won't be on here all going crazy defending them, but it is just sad for all parties involved. EXCEPT the owners of the dogs

Thank goodness there aren't any coconut palms in Pittsburgh

Not all pit bull owners are drug dealers but it seems most drug dealers own pit bulls.

Because they are strong dogs that can be trained to attack. Based on the fact that the owner thought putting them on the leash and walking them home was going to fix the problem, you can see that it is an owner problem.

There are many things that will cause a pit bull to bite/attack. A lot of these same things will make any dog bite/attack.

But, there are thousands and thousands of pit bulls in this country that have never bit and will never bite.

Anyone that purchases a pit bull should be responsible enough to train the dog or have it trained. Keep it in a fence, inside or however but not allow it to roam. And the dog should be fixed. I am sure there are other things but I don't own one so I don't know.

A lot of (not all) the attacks that make the news are in fact done by dogs taught to attack either because of their owners illegal activity or they are used for fighting or just becaue the owner wants a mean dog. Whichever it still goes back to the owner.

If pit bulls are ever outlawed, there will be another dog that is used in this same manner and makes the news. Rotweiler, Doberman, Chow are all dogs that can do the same damage.

My prayers are with this child and his family. The dogs should be put down and the owner should be charged.
