...not necessarily at a young age!

Here's mine...

1. Requiem for a Dream
2. Silence of the Lambs
3. South Park

Quite a mix, but there ya go. Be forewarned: Requiem for a Dream is VERY disturbing. Silence of the Lambs is harrowing. South Park is... well, South Park :upsidedow

  1. Star Wars
  2. Casablanca
  3. The Shawshank Redemption
Technically, The Empire Strikes Back is a better film compared to Star Wars, but you need to see one to see the other.

Ocean's Eleven
Paul Blart - Mall Cop
Saving Private Ryan

I know, Mall Cop is mindless, but daggone is it funny!

Apollo 13
It's a Wonderful Life
Rear Window

And for the less serious...
My Life in Ruins
Animal House
Bring in the Boom

The Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring if I have to pick just one)

Well, you're a little freaky, aren't ya? ;) J/k--I've seen them, too. But quite a nightmare-inducing set of movies.

I like 2 of Flightless Duck's: Casablanca and Shawshank. If limited to only 1 more, I'd probably pick Singin' In The Rain. It covers 3 great genres (comedy, romance, musical) and is one of the great movies of all time.

Steel Magnolias
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Rocky Horror Picture Show

IMO, it depends a bit on criteria. I think there are two categories of "must see" -- one is because the film is a cultural touchstone, and the other is because it is a work of art. (Also, picking just 3 is REALLY hard for me; I'm a film buff.)

So, in the cultural touchstone category, my top 3 for Americans would be :
1. Star Wars (although I agree that Empire Strikes Back is by far the best of the set.)
2. The Princess Bride
3. The Godfather

In the work of art category:
1. Raging Bull
2. Citizen Kane
3. The Manchurian Candidate

And because I can't stop at just 3, honorable mentions to the following somewhat older films that folks may not have seen: Baby Face, A Face in the Crowd, Night of the Hunter (the original version), Ace in the Hole, and, though it is not meant to be a comedy, The Best of Everything, because to modern eyes, its portrayal of women in the workplace is endlessly funny.

Schindler's List
The Godfather (1 and 2 probably should count as one movie, since they're one book)
Lord of the Rings (Fellowship if you have to choose just one of the three)
