3/9-3/14 trip.... help with hotel choice?

We just found out the dates of our Disney trip and YIKES not much time to plan. We're WDW vets but have never been to DL until now...can't wait!

We have 2 specific needs concerning a hotel choice. A party totaling 6 which will include my 62 yr old parents. My dad may need to walk back to the hotel for a mid day nap (we don't leave until we're done!) but I don't want to make him walk all that far. Since I haven't been to DL before I have no idea of the exact scale of distance involved w/ the hotels/maps I've seen.

I need a moderate (or even a nice economy?) place to stay that will accommodate the 6 of us that my parents can easily get back to if necessary.

One more (maybe) useful detail is that DH is military. We have thought about taking advantage of the 30% off of DLR hotels that is going on through June 12 but they seem much farther away than some of the good neighbor hotels?

I'd look at hotwire.com It's actually pretty easy to "know" what hotel you are booking. Between betterbidding.com and tripadvisor, it's usually foolproof. We got the Hyatt Regency for $80 in late March. Pluggin in your dates I see one 3.5* in their zone "Anaheim North" (this is the Anabella Hotel), and one 3.5* in "Anaheim South" is definitely the Crowne Plaza. I'd go for the Crown Plaza at $69 a night per room (get 2 rooms). If you need anymore help, PM me. Why pay $100+ a night for a Hojo or Days Inn? I'm pretty sure the Crowne Plaza shares a shuttle with the Hyatt, so you're father could take that to rest.

Our trip is for the exact same dates! We wanted a bigger room because we have two young children that we wanted to nap/sleep well in a separate room. We wanted something close so we could easily walk. A couple of people suggested the Anaheim Camelot Inn & Suites. The suites aren't available with the good neighbor package, but booked it anyway. I haven't stayed there before so I can't tell you much about it, but I liked what I saw when I compared to other hotels.

I really like this hotel and it is quite close to the parks.

Other options would be Carousel Inn and Desert Inn. They both have pretty roomy suites. I believe Tropicana also has suites but I have never seen one.

If you do want to stay onsite, the DL hotel would have about the same walk as Camelot, but it may be slightly farther. You can't get any closer to the parks than the Grand California. But all the hotels I mentioned would be closer than the Paradise Pier. Plus, even with the military discount, getting a suite or a couple of rooms to accomodate 6 people would still be pricey.

As an analogy to those used to WDW, I describe the walk between DL and California Adventure as the walk between Epcot Future World and World Showcase.

The Tropicana does have suites, and even some with kitchens. It is right across the street. The Candy cane Inn has it's own free shuttle, so that is a nice option

HoJo has the Entertainment book rate for the first 3 nights of your 5 night stay; that could give you 2 rooms at the standard room rate of $59 a night, if they still have rooms available. They're a very nice moderate hotel. For the remaining two nights you can still get 15% off Disboards rate. You have to call the hotel directly and talk to in house reservations, though.
