2nd UY Question

Thinking about doing something kind of ridiculous...

All our points are at VGF... now that we are "2 bedroom people" (thanks recent stay at BLT), we need to upgrade our membership...

Envisioning buying a 2nd UY of VGF Points. Does it work like this?

If I bought a second UY for say 80 points at VGF, if I am understanding correctly:
1. I could purchase 24 OTUP each year for each use year - so I could buy 48 points - up from the 24 points I presently can purchase with only my one UY
2. One time annually, I could transfer my points between the memberships - say the 80 points I purchase plus the 24 OTUP or 104 Points annually total I could deposit into my "other membership".

This does mean I would not be able to purchase transfer points from other members.
It sounds mildly inconvenient, but really not too bad - especially if everything stays with the same home resort. One or two extra calls to MS each year, for the benefit of purchasing up to an additional 24 OTUP and potentially getting a better deal on a resale contract.

Not sure 80 points is what I would actually purchase, just using the number 80 for the example.

I'd have to keep track of the banking/borrowing deadlines and the UY, but I'm envisioning getting the 2nd UY close to the first to make sure our annual trip stays ahead of the banking deadline.

Am I missing something?

You have a lot going on here! I'm not familiar with much of it, but I'd recommend you verify you can transfer OTUP. I'm not sure that's allowed. You might be able to purchase 48, but they might not work as you're laying out here.

OTUP are pretty close to break-even vs. the first-year cost of owned points at full price (amortized), and there is no guarantee that the Beyond deal that makes them attractive will continue.

If I consistently needed ~105 points per year, I would buy them and keep them in the same UY.

Unless you have a reason for the 2nd UY (i.e. travel time of year), IMO it is not worth the hassle of transferring and tracking a different expiration just so you can purchase more OTUPs.

This is speaking from someone who used to have a small contract in a second UY. I bought it only because it was super cheap on resale. In the end, I sold it off, and just added on more points in my current UY for convenience.

Sometimes the transfer points are quirky. Like one time I had to call MS to make a reservation with them because they were there, but they weren't visible to me on the website to make a reservation by myself.

I'd recommend you verify you can transfer OTUP

I'm not sure about this either. I think so, but that might only be under the recently-relaxed transfer rules, and it almost certainly is not contractually guaranteed.

It will let you buy a second set of OTUP yes, but you cannot transfer them. So you will end up managing trips in the 2 different use years/memberships if you buy OTUP on both regularly. You will have to decide if that is worth it for the extra hassle.

Why not just buy the amount of points you need and stay in the same UY? Seems like you’re over complicating things for no reason.

Id would not buy a 2nd UY with intention of needing to transfer. OTUP are only good at 7 months. Money saved up front is not worth all the hassle of OTUP and transfers.

If you transfer between your own memberships, you can not accept a transfer from anyone else.

As already mentioned, you can’t transfer OTU points, nor can then be banked or borrowed.

Having two memberships can work…I have three..but not as well when you are relying on using together for the same reservation.

We don’t…even if it’s the same trip, we book some on one and some on the other, and just link. So far, never had to move rooms.

IMO, unless you have a reason to have a different UY, and want to book different trips, I’d stick with the same UY.

I would strongly advise against a second use year just for the sake of buying OTU points and even more strongly advise against it if you're trying to buy more VGF points. I was nearly tempted to buy resale RIV in a different UY than my direct points and thankfully I listened to the advice here and kept contracts with the same home resort in the same UY. I do own 2 use years but they both have 300+ points in each and easily function on their own without needing any transfers. One of my memberships is entirely resale and the other is entirely direct. AIso, the majority of the points in the resale one are Aulani so they are not generally used for booking WDW. I would hate owning 2 if I had to regularly transfer points between them so for that reason I'm going to recommend you just stick to 1.

And for all the same reasons others posted, also this!!

You will most certainly regret doing it, you can’t see the points so you lose track of transferred points, you can only get them at 7 months, and you can only send or receive 1 transfer per year so you WILL get stuck with points.

If you plan to travel at a completely different time of year is the ONLY reason to consider a different UY. (or possibly another location, DLR, VB, HHI, AUL)

From someone who has multiple use years and wishes we had less with the now transfer restrictions. Don’t buy the same resort in 2 use years, just don’t.

Even with MMB, OTUP aren't *that* incredible of a deal. They cost (99+240) / 24 = $14.13 per point. Most resale contracts at VGF would work out to less than that per point over the life of the contract. ALSO, most resale contracts are cheaper the larger they are. So a 110 point contract at VGF might cost $160 per point or something, while an 80 point contract could cost $170 per point. OTUPs are restricted to the 7 month booking window. They can't be banked, borrowed, or transferred. So by getting a smaller contract + OTUPs instead of just buying the right number of points, you are paying more, adding significant complexity, and getting... not much. I would even just recommend getting the same UY and then getting some more points via rental/transfer if you really don't want to commit to a higher number of points long term.

I have 2 use years, and I have purchased OTUP on both of them. But part of that is driven by the fact that I have annual passes this year, so the marginal cost of another day or another trip is very low right now. If I thought I would buy 48 OTUPs every year, I would be in the market for a small add-on contract very soon.

+1 (emphatic +1!) to all of this. If you only have 2 memberships and transfer between them regularly, it’s just a matter of time until you are stuck with orphaned points.

Yes! There are legit reasons for second UYs, but if the plan requires regular point transfers, I think you will live to regret it!

Each UY should be able to stand alone (enough points for a whole trip, though it’s ok if you travel every other year, assuming you have a predictable life and are unlikely to cancel), and I actually think having different resorts in different UY can make sense if you want more waitlists or if you travel during two periods and want to avoid traveling after the banking window.

Yes, same. I own VGF in 2UY (saved me about $20 per point) and it’s the only major mistake I’d say I’ve made as a DVC owner (conversely, the 3UY I have for AUL/VGF-VGC/BCV all work ok—but 4 with two VGF was dumb).
