OK - any of two-time mama's (or more) - did you ever have a second birth go slower than the first??

I'm a bit freaked about it because with number one - my water broke at 11:45am and DD was born at 1:29pm - so with a 50min drive to the hospital (without traffic), maybe I'll park a camper in the hospitals parking lot the last month :D.

So I know every pregnancy and birth is different but I'd like to know my odds.

I had to be induced the 2nd time, so my labor was a little bit more than the 1st time (about 5 hours more). But, I've heard if the baby comes on it's own, the 2nd time around-the baby comes faster. I was my mom's 3rd born and she was in labor with me the longest.

Maybe the baby's daddy and all those around you can learn to deliver a baby before it's time for you to have the baby.;) Good luck.:) Sounds like your dd was in a hurry to meet you.:)

The first was 2 1/2 days. Second was 6 hours.

Water broke at 9 pm, labor started about 11:30 pm and first DS was born at 7:33 am.

Second time labor started at around 8:30 pm, the Dr had to break my water. DS was born at 12:26 am. I had only been at the hospital 55 mins.

The third and last, my DH was nervous!! He was afraid he might have to deliver the baby. LOL! My water broke about 5:30 am, labor started about an hour later. After 1 1/2 hrs it stopped!!! Nothing was happening! I was in the hospital, they had me walk around etc. At 11:00 am labor started again, DS was born at 11:59 am.

I don't think you can tell what's going to happen. I wouldn't waste any time gettting to the hospital though.
:) Good luck!:)

Have you considered a home birth ;)? I'm actually somewhat serious. I would have a home birth if I were to have a second child. But ... we're stopping at one. I can't stand sibling rivalry.

No guarantee subsequent births will be faster. My third delivery was by far the slowest. Second was fastest -- doctor almost missed it!

Yes, DS #2 broke all the rules. ;)

DS#1 was 10 days early and DS#2 was only 9. Supposedly you go earlier with your 2nd.

With DS#1 my water broke at 2:30 am and he was born at 8:41 am...about 6 hours. DS#2 my water broke at 9:15. I thought "Great! Ill have this kid by noon!". No such luck! By 5:00pm the nurses were trying to convince me to go on pitocin(I didnt want an iv, they gross me out). I did by 6:30, pain started at 7:00 and he was born at 8:12...11 hours!

Good luck!

My doctor let me schedule an induction with my second because my first came so quickly. I am so thankful that he agreed it wouldn't be a good idea to have her in the car on the way there!

Oh, and even though I was induced, second DD was born in only two hours.

Oh man my daughter was born so fast. My DS was 12 hours from beginning to end. My water broke with her at 9am. Nothing happened so they induced ay 1pm. She came at 4:29pm 4 pushes 3 1/2 minutes. Fabulous!!

1st- 8 hours
2nd- 8 hours
3rd- 4 hours
4th (9 yrs later) 18 hours!

Moral of the story? When you wait that long between births it's like the first time all over and sometimes worse!:(

I'd just make sure to have everything packed and ready to go so you can scoot. You'll be fine!!

Let's see

DD#1 21days early (7.7lbs)...water broke 5am, real labor 6pm, delivery 10pm

DS #2 14 days early (9.5lbs)...water broke 6pm, real labor 3am, delivery 6am

DS #3 7 days early (8.2lbs)...midwife broke my water 5pm, delivery 5:30pm

DD #4 on time (8.15lbs)...water broke 6pm, delivery 6:45pm

All of mine got faster east time....

1st: Crampy labor started 8pm, continued through night, checked into the hospital at 10am, Dr broke water, I decided "Oh MAN!! Let's do that epidural after all!!", Slept through contractions until time to push about 3pm, DD born at 3:45pm

2nd: Water broke 12 midnight -- no cramping, sent to hospital, walked etc to get labor going, no luck, 5am on pitocin, labor got going, epidural ended up as a reverse saddle block (everything was numb EXCEPT the "saddle" area), wasn't dilating very quickly, 8:30am (just checked - 5cm) talking to secretary on phone to tell her we were at the hospital, 8:40am asked DH to look as I embarassedly told him I had the sensation of a (how to say this nicely?) #2 log that hadn't come all the way out (I was sooo embarrassed that that may have happened without me being able to control it). Most EXCELLENT DH reassured me it was ok, but took a peek to reassure me. He almost fell on the floor when he yelled, "The head!" Sure enough, I had gone from 5cm to 10cm AND was crowning in 10 MINUTES!! The Dr. got in just in time to catch her!! (I asked for a discount since he really didn't DO anything! Ha Ha!) She was born at 9am sharp.

My advice would be head for the hospital as soon as water breaks or cramping starts. Good Luck!!

First one contractions began at 4:30AM delivery 11:00AM so 6 1/2 hours

Second one I was induced. They broke my water at 3:30PM began mild contration at 5:00PM, given petocin (not sure why) at 6:00PM delivery at 8:50 so in total 5 1/2 hours, 4 hours of "real" labor.

I was induced too, then ended up having an emergency c-section. Definitely not like the first.

The first was very normal. :)

My first was 12 hours, my second was 9 1/2 hours. It was a little bit shorter but he didn't just slide on out in a jiffy that's for sure. We didn't have a 50 minute drive to the hospital but we did have to drop my daughter off at my mom's first so we had 20 minutes to her house and 30 minutes to the hospital from her house for a total of 50 minutes. I was very nervous about that. My water broke at 6:50 - we attempted to contact the doctor multiple times before finally leaving for my mom's at 9:00am before ever contacting him. We arrived to the hospital at 10am and I was 5 cms.

It's funny, I dilated 5 cms in just over 3 hours until I got to the hospital. From that point it took another 6 hours to get from 5 to 10.

Both were excrutiatngly long and painful.

And both ended in C-sections. I love my boys, wouldn't trade them for the world, but after the 36 hour labor for the second time with the second child, I told DH to get fixed or I might have to do it for him. :teeth:

WOW - zurg's wife after that last one

DD #4 on time (8.15lbs)...water broke 6pm, delivery 6:45pm

I'd be shaking in my boots

I was born within 20 minutes of my mom's arrival at the hospital. My younger sister was born so fast that she just came out one night while my parents were watching Letterman in bed, LOL! My youngest sister was induced so it took longer.

I have heard of stories where the second birth does take longer but it didn't happen in my mom's case.

Well lets see DD #1 was induced and 24 hrs of labor 17 days late weighing in at 6lbs 2 oz, 2nd DD was 10 days late weighed in at 6lbs 8 oz a had labor all day at home but was ok and able to still do normal things just stopped for labor pains DH insisted I go to the hospital at 8:30 pm we arrived checked in and got upstairs about 9:05 pm was 2 centimeters dialated told to go walk around the hospital at 9:20, didn't feel right so I got to labor room at 9:30 and guess what daughter was born at 9:33 with the nurse there and Dr just catching at last moment I still had all my clothes and sneakers were still on.

SilverLily, did you write that post for me?

My first DD came so fast I also had my second induced. DD was born about 40 minutes after they broke my water. I didn't even know I was in labor! I had back labor and I just thought I was having really bad back pains. My mom freaked out and convinced me to go to the ER. Thank goodness she did. My dr was already there delivering babies and of the other 5 girls that got there before me I had mine first...I think I made them all mad

So I scheduled to have DS induced one week before due date. They broke my water around 8:30 and DS was born at 10:05 so it was about 2 hours. I was only in pain for about 30 minutes though. I remember my mom and MIL got to the hospital with my DD around 10am with some doughnuts for DH to eat for breakfast. I told him to go out of the room to eat them because I couldn't eat anything and I didn't want to watch him eat. I felt fine then, but suddenly he had to stop eating his doughnuts to come be with me because DS was ready to come out!

I'm so glad I wasn't in too much pain with either of them. I can't stand the thought of having an epidural.
