Most of the ones I've looked at cost around $75, give or take $10 or so. I need to get one soon. The baby obviously isn't going to be going up and down the stairs right away, but I want to be able to make our dog stay either upstairs or downstairs when I can't devote all of my attention to the baby.

We have several in our home which are the ones that attach to the wall. I love them. I'm a home daycare provider and use these when I need to limit the kids space. The ones I have are Safety 1st and very durable plastic. I've found the kids hanging on them at times and they've stood up to the weight. I know I didn't pay that much for them -- maybe $20 each or so. Definately worth the cost!

We had the BEST baby gates!!! they were expensive... But boy to me, they were worth it! I do not remember the maker, I think they were made in Europe, maybe Sweden. We got them at the Baby Superstore, now BabiesRus. they are white powdercoat painted metal, and look like porch or verandah railings. ( Very NON babyish, they work so well with any decor.) One side is hinged, and screwed firmly to the doorjamb, while the other side latches-unlatches, with one hand, to swing open.

The biggie for me is to get one that does actually attach to the doorjamb..... The Tension Spring types are such a pain!! Having to be totally removed and reset EVERY time you go thru!

These were GREAT, I highly recommend them, and I would buy them again!
