I was nine years old when I first visited WDW in 1975. Vacations don't get much better, as I can still vividly recall the two-week stay at the Polynesian Village. As a family, we were hooked from the first day, and our Spring Break holidays became exclusively WDW from that point onward. At first, as a practical matter, my parents told us (my sister and I) that we could only make the trip every two years, but I can remember several exceptions to that rule, where we unexpectedly went in an "off year". I even remember one year when we decided to make the trip (24-hour drive) at the last minute, and without any reservations (everything was booked), and we seemed to spend every night in a different hotel (first night Golf Resort, second night Fort Wilderness trailer etc., etc.). Of course, that trip was every bit as enjoyable as the others.

By the time I graduated from university, I had made at least a dozen trips to WDW, always staying on site. I believe that it was in the late 70's when we discovered the villas at Lake Buena Vista, and we just loved the "on site", "home away from home" combination. It was not until I introduced my wife to the Polynesian Village on our honeymoon that I stayed again in a standard hotel room.

We now have children of our own (4 year-old daughter, 2 year-old son, second son expected in two weeks), and we have (naturally) spent our last two holidays in WDW, spending a week in a two-bedroom unit at VWL (renting). As I was making arrangements for another "rental" holiday at BCV next year (third March in a row at WDW), I finally was able to see the light, and break through all of my misgivings about "time shares" (I know, I know ... DVC is not a typical time share!!!).

Earlier this week, I took the plunge on 350 BCV points. As I finalized the purchase, I had absolutely no reservations, as I truly felt like this purchase was 28 years in the making. Unbeknownst to my DW, I have now been able to make next year's reservations as a true member (she still thinks we're renting). If I can keep the secret, I hope to surprise her with this at Christmas.

I have very much appreciated the input that I have received from this site, and from all of your comments. Thank you all!

What a great story! My parents took me to Disney World the summer of 1972, the first summer it opened! Now my husband and I enjoy taking our four kids! We are new to DVC also. Welcome and congratulations!!! Lacee

That is a wonderful story. I grew up in a family without much money so we never went on vacations. My first vacation to WDW was as an adult and have gone back every year (or twice a year) since. I do really hope that my childern can tell the story you just told 20 some years from now though!

Congratulations and welcome home neighbor!

Congratulations and Welcome Home! Sounds like you made a wonderful choice for your family. I don't know how you'll manage to "keep the secret" but it sure would be a magical announcement for Christmas! More power to you.

Thanx for sharing the story!

WELCOME HOME!!

I hope that I didn't say it too loud and spoil the secret.;)

How wonderful! Welcome home. You are one good hubby!

My family also vacationed regularly at WDW, and I feel like loving Mickey is "in my blood." Many of my best childhood memories were made at WDW. One of our best trips included a stay at the Polynesian. I will always have a special place in my heart for that resort, and if they built Villas there I'd be in heaven! I hope my children will inherit my love of Disney.

Congratulations!!!! Welcome Home!!!!

Hope you can keep it a secret till Christmas!! I don't think I could!! But I hope you can b/c that would be a wonderful present!!

Welcome Home!! :teeth: Thanks for the Awesome post. :teeth:

Welcome Home!!

It makes me warm inside to read your childhood memories of WDW. As a kid, we did go to the beach most summers but never made it to WDW. My father owned his own business( which Im a partner in now) so it was hard for him to leave it for long.

I respect his dedication to his work and the business he has built, but our family has experinced a lot of lost loved ones, some who died at a young age and I realized early enough that life is short so I dont want those few yrs with our kids to pass by and I wake up one morning and say I wish I had done this or that.

My folks got to go with us to WDW a couple yrs ago and I cant wait for them to make the trip again with us.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's what family & Disney memories are made of.

Enjoy each and everyone of your Disney Days!!

And congrat on the new bundle of joy joining you soon.

Congratulations and Welcome Home!!

With our love for all things Disney, buying into DVC seemed like a no-brainer (once we could bring ourselves to make the financial commitment). We both grew up in families that did not take vacations. Now we and our DD(almost 15) and DS (almost 10) will take my parents and my DH's parents!!! While the logistics of getting everyone there and the feeling of responsibility for everyone's great time may be overwhelming at times, we are all very very excited about the trip! The rack room rate for the accomodations would have been nearly $6,000 which we absolutely could not have done. DVC has made it possible to make dreams come true!:D
