You are the DIL and blood is thicker than water. They will "side" with their own daughter before they will side with you.
Your ILs are adults, not stupid and know what your SIL is doing...if they choose to allow it, that is their choice.

First off I agree you can't win in that situation.

Just like I can't win in mine.
My MIL for years lived in Florida- it was nice no pressure. Then she got sick and decided to move back(it's her and my FIL) Well my SIL took it upon herself to buy them a one bedroom condo(with their money) and then proceed to call us and ask if we could help with a kitchen renovation for them. Well I was upset since I too had found them a place near us 2 bedrooms and across from a hospital and cheaper than the one SIL found oh and it was BRAND NEW!
But I wasn't pushy enough to buy it and tell her she had to pay for it.
Well Saturday is moving day, she's been at my SIL's for the past 2 weeks. They just called to ask DH to come help her move. We live in another state- 2.5 hours away.
SIL told us that she is living by SIL because that's where "everyone" lives. Well great so get everyone to help her move. So much for Memorial day weekend. woohoo. We did have a party to go to. I guess I'm going alone with the kids.

I'm pissed. But can't say anything. It's dh's mom and if she needs his help he'll help. But all I keep thinking is.. and so it begins.

I recently had someone come to me for advice about their sister - who they love dearly.. I won't go into all of the details, but the sister is really, really messed up (psychologically; drinking too much; and going through husbands like water).. The person seeking the advice wanted to know what she could do - because she loves her sister and knows that eventually she will "self-destruct".. I asked her if her sister acknowledges that she has "problems" - the answer was "No it's everyone else that has the problems.." I asked her if she was willing to get any sort of help - the answer was "No - she says she doesn't need help.."

So - I told her the only thing she can do is sit back and wait for her sister to self-destruct - and then be there to try to help her pick up the pieces..

You can't help someone who won't help themselves - and especially if they don't even acknowledge they have a problem..

Sadly, I think you just have to sit back and see how this whole thing pans out..

I know you're just venting but be prepared to be able to say NO when SIL comes looking to you for a handout
