21 day trip report LIVE from Amtrak, Disneyland & EB Repo through the Panama Canal!

We have tried to stuff each other in the small closet, I am pretty sure it is 6” deep, 5 foot tall and 18” wide. We were laughing so hard, I was crying. We got everybody in except Andrew and me. Andrew is too tall and I am well… bustier than the others! ;)

So, I had just run up the stairs to the Golden Zephyr when Andrew came running behind me…”Mom, something is wrong with Casey…I mean really wrong”. So I ran back down the stairs to see Casey holding his mouth and walking in circles. When I went up to him, he held out his hand to give me something…it was a LARGE PIECE OF HIS TOOTH!

I made him open his mouth and show me and he had chipped out a large triangular piece of his top FRONT tooth. He was quite calm and very brave, but you could tell he was in a lot of pain. So we decided to head back to the hotel and call it a day, since there wasn’t much we could do tonight to get to a dentist. We got back to the room with him and Sarah being quite quiet. We decided that Sarah must have felt guilty because she and he were goofing around when it happened. So I decided to try to make Casey feel better and called him and Sarah over. I showed him Sarah’s 2 bottom front teeth and said “don’t worry, these aren’t real and they look just fine! (She knocked them out when she was 13 months old and even the adult teeth were damaged so they were ground down and nicely rebuilt when she was about 12.) Well, she then freaked out and said “What, why didn’t you tell me they weren’t real?” I was like…What??!?! You don’t remember that? So we were laughing because her reaction was just NOT what I was expecting. It was pretty funny! When we got to the room, Sarah and Casey went to bed. They were both pretty worn out!

Andrew, Emily and I went to the 11th floor concierge lounge to see if we could watch the fireworks from up there. We have been to Disneyland 3 times over the past few years and I have NEVER seen the fireworks. They are either not showing when we are there, or the weather hasn’t cooperated. So I am determined to see them this trip! We got settled and the concierge staff who helped me with some dentist phone numbers were very kind and got me a glass of wine even though they had officially stopped serving wine for the evening. We have a GREAT concierge staff this trip! What they do for the fireworks is to open all the sliding doors to the outside, turn off the lights and pipe the music in for the show. It is a great way to watch the fireworks!!!!

We waited and they kept announcing that the winds were too high and the fireworks were on hold and likely to be cancelled. UGH! Am I never going to see them? But we waited and the concierge server, Robert, told me that they set off balloons in the park to see how the winds in the higher elevation are, they do this right at show time and wait for the results to see if it is safe. About 10 minutes later, the fireworks did end up starting. Yippee!!! We really enjoyed the show and came back to the room and headed off to bed for the night. We all slept well!

I am an early riser and being 2 hours difference, I was up bright and early. I was able to catch up on some emails etc. I called the dentist at home and they said that if Casey isn’t in pain, we could leave the tooth until we got home, but if it hurt, we would need to call a dentist locally. When Casey woke up, he was in a lot of pain. He can’t eat or drink or breathe through his mouth without pain. So we called 1-800-DENTIST and they found a dentist about 15 miles away that would take our insurance and they could see Casey at 2:00! So we decided to head to California Adventure for a few hours and then we would go to the dentist while the other kids stay here and swim or read. We got to the park about 30 minutes before it opened and got in line for the brand new “Toy Story Midway Mania” ride. We hung out and walked to the ride when the park opened. We waited about 5 minutes and were on the ride! It was a really fun ride, everyone enjoyed it. Andrew got the highest score and Casey was in 2nd. Sarah and I were almost tied (I beat her by a mere 1100 points) and Emily was a little behind us. It was a fun ride/game!

Then we did California Screaming with about a 5 minute wait and then Tower of Terror with a 3 minute wait. The park is so empty and very enjoyable. The girls did TOT again and Andrew, Casey and I went to do the Monsters Inc. ride. It is a cute ride!

We met up with the girls and watched a fun singing group for a few minutes. Then a Little Green Army man (character from Toy Story) decided to join with the singing group and danced with some of the park visitors, we really had fun with that! That was a nice surprise!

Casey was in a lot of pain and wanted to go back to the hotel and Andrew agreed to go with him, so Emily, Sarah and I went to ride Soaring over California and Grizzly River Rapids. Then we went to the hotel and ate a little and off to the dentist we went!

The dentist was in Anaheim Hills (apparently a very affluent area) and a $45 cab ride! The office was very clean and modern. They had a soothing fountain in the waiting area and flat screen tvs on the ceilings of the exam rooms. Casey was able to watch a movie while they worked on him! The dentist said the he would put a “bandaid” on the tooth…he couldn’t repair it because the nerves needed to heal. So Casey is stuck with a silly smile, but no more pain. Not too bad compared with a broken nose or something else I suppose. Finally the story came out about what happened…Casey had snapped Sarah’s straps and she went to silly slap him and he ducked. When he ducked, he had a “face” off with a pole and the pole won! Oh my…but what can you do.

As luck would have it, the cab driver said he was going to take his lunch break after he dropped us off and said he would wait for us. So I called him and he picked us up right as we were done with the appointment. That was very nice and very easy! I don’t usually carry a lot of cash on me when I am on vacation, so we had to count our change to pay him for the trip home…but we had enough and were able to give him a tip still. Whew!

Then we got back to the room and everyone was happy to chill until our dinner reservations. So, I finished unpacking and the kids showered and read books.

I am all caught up now. We are headed to dinner at Naples in Downtown Disney and then I think we are going to go to Disneyland Park for the evening!

Night all!

What an eventful trip - and you're just getting started!!

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Looking forward to more installments!!!

i am so glad that Casey is okay and able to enhoy the trip.. can't wait to meet you on sunday and share the TOAL

Nicole, please read your regular email for important info for Andrew about school. We watched the opening ceremony to keep the pets company. Back home and the plane hasn't yet. Hope they get there quickly. Have fun.

So, group two is dad and Jessie... took flight from Milw to LA Thurs afternoon. Nana was a great help getting Jessie ready (while I finished up some work and packing) and then driving us to the airport... Built in lots of extra time because that southbound traffic can be a bear (PoohMom has a puzzled look on her face... "extra time? what's that?").

So, it's me, Jessie, my carry on, SLR carry on, digital vid camera carry on, Jessie's carry on (too heavy for her to carry, btw!), and THREE big suitcases... one big enough they even marked it "special handling"! How am I going to do this?!?!

The first part in Milw was the toughest... that 300 ft from the car to the ticket counter to the bag drop! It was so packed by the checkin kiosk, poor Jessie was all smooshed in. The bags were tippy and one bumped her on the elbow and she started to cry... all while I was trying to go back past all the people in line with all the bags! But, once I dropped them with the TSA it was smooth sailing... and that was the last she cried the entire trip!

The plane was packed and I winced as a mom and 9 mo. baby sat down next to us. BUT, it ended up being great... the baby was well behaved and loved Jessie so they played a lot. And they were German so we had stuff to chat about. Jessie basically talked the entire plane ride! No naps!

On the LA end, I was able to get a cart right away which made it pretty manageable. We had about a 30 min wait for the bus, then the 40 min or so to Disneyland and then we were reunited with the rest of the gang!

We headed to the opening of Disneyland to get on the Nemo ride right away... then I headed back here to the hotel to work for a few hours. Just a few more things to catch up on before I can "cut loose"! ;)

Ok, so I've been with the family now a whole night and morning... and I just found out about the whole Casey tooth thing BY READING THIS THREAD!!!

So... maybe now I tell MY secret here first...

Nana was cleaning the hermit crab cage so we could take it to the crab babysitter (neighbor friend, Ben). She pulled out the green one (does it even have a name? i dont know, im just a Dad) and said "uh-oh" as a claw dropped off. "Oh boy, It's dead..."

So, I grabbed the shell and took it over to the garbage and shook out the rest of the dead crab gunk... but I could see something deep in the shell... gunk that won't come out. So, I started banging it against the garbage wall. No luck. Bang harder. Nothing. Hmmmm... grabbed a straw and tried to dig it out. Nope.

Took it the the sink... Put water on full and tried to blast it out like a shell waterpick. Shake it. More spray, now from the hose. Nope. Bang it against the bottom of the sink. Can't get that gunk out! Oh well... give up and just put the shell back down on the counter so Nana can put it back in the cage when its clean. (Hermit crabs are weird, they move from shell to shell occasionally so there are always multiple empties in the cage. And they are apparently unfazed by the fact that many of them were once coffins for other crabs that have passed on...).

So, then a few minutes later as Nana was putting it back in the cage she says "um, it just moved". "What?!?" It hadn't died - it had just shed its skin! And then had crawled back in the deep recess of the shell!

So then I replay the whole thing I did to it in my mind... thinking about that scene in Monsters, Inc. where Sully is watching the garbage machine, crush, shred, and chop what he thought was Boo... And I also vagely recall at some time PoohMom warning me that regular tap water is deadly to the crabs...

So, he didnt move after that... was it a last twitch of life? I decided to not take it to the neighbor yet ("here, babysit these, oh, btw, one is probably dead" - LOL!)... I checked off and on all night... No movement...

But the next day I looked and I thought he was in a new position. Hope! I moved him to a specific place so I could verify. And later he again was in a new position! And then later he was actually moving his little claws and peaking out!...

So, time will tell, but all signs are positive. If that little guy can survive all that, I think he'll be with us for quite awhile!... Whatever his name is. ;)

I can't even believe it! You knucklehead!!!!

When a crab dies, it just falls out of its shell, it doesn't hold on for dear life! I am proud of "Billy" (Thats his name by the way) for literally hanging in there.

OMG, I just read this again, a STRAW!!! Poor little guy! Have fun explaining that to Emily when we get home. (It is her crab and we have had them for 4 YEARS!)

I hope you feel better getting that off your chest...I wish I had something else to "disclose" to you via the DIS, but I can't think of anything offhand. I am too boring.

To all you tag alongers, I will update again this evening...along with letting you guys know how Emily takes the news...

I am loving this report! I can't wait to hear more. :thumbsup2

This is an excellent trip report! I'm loving all the details, and the way you're describing it makes it seem like an ideal vacation (aside from the dental emergancies and the hermit crab murder ;) ). I hope you continue to update so regularly while on board, because I can't wait to live vicariously on the repo through you and your family!

By the way, you have me seriously considering a train trip in the future. You've made it sound like so much fun. The only thing of the sort that I've ever been on was NY to FL when I was a kid, and I was too young to remember it or appreciate it. Thanks for the idea! :goodvibes

Poohmomof5 wow I love your trip report and look forward to watching and reading the rest of your great 21 day trip
Stacie

I am so loving this trip report!

Just read about the hermit crab...I'm laughing so hard, I'm crying!!! We had a hermit crab so that to us a long time ago. The Monsters Inc. is what really got me!

Have a wonderful trip, I'm glad everyone is safe and I can't wait to follow the rest of your journey bringing the Magic back home! :)

I am really enjoying this trip report and the interaction of Mom and Dad has me laughin SO hard.

I took a particular interest in this cruise because i have a friend who is on it with his sister and her kids (they aren't DISsers - but I sent them the link to the meet thread)......Can't wait to see if I can find them in the background of someones picture :lmao:

Have a wonderful trip and looking forward to the updates!!!

I'm enjoying your report. We leave in 7 days and will be taking the auto train down to Sanford!
