Anniversary Screening will Feature Cast and Crew Reunion Hosted by Noted Film Director and Producer Kevin Smith; Event Features Iconic “Rocketeer” Props and Costumes from the Walt Disney Archives

From Disney's D23: April 28, 2011

For Disney fans and movie buffs alike it’s time to grab the helmets and prepare to take flight once again! On June 21, 2011, come relive the action and fun of Disney’s 1991 adventure-fantasy The Rocketeer at the legendary El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood as D23: The Official Disney Fan Club celebrates the 20th anniversary of this Disney film favorite.

Film director and writer Kevin Smith will host a panel discussion and reunion of original cast and crew from the film. Fans will then delight in the viewing of this out-of-this-world adventure on the big screen. Following the movie, guests are invited to tour the Hollywood Museum — located in the nearby historic Max Factor building — and explore the museum’s four floors of exhibits as well as a special exhibition of props and costumes from The Rocketeer, curated exclusively for this event by the Walt Disney Archives.

On June 19, 1991, Hollywood’s landmark art deco El Capitan Theatre, restored to its original grandeur, re-opened its gilded doors for the premiere of The Rocketeer, transporting audiences to a golden age of thrills, glamour and, of course, sleek jet packs.

The Rocketeer follows the adventures of stunt pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) who discovers a stolen rocket pack and sets off on a series of heroic (and sometimes hilarious) adventures that attract the attention of Howard Hughes, the FBI, gangsters, a band of Nazis and one aspiring actress, namely Cliff’s girlfriend Jenny (Oscar® winner Jennifer Connolly). Directed by Joe Johnston, the film also stars Terry O’ Quinn, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton and Paul Sorvino.

I love this movie:love:. I am so sorry that it bombed at the box office:confused3. I had hopes of a Rocketeer TV series. That would be soooooo cool:banana:.

Did anyone go to this screening? (Dave?)
I'm dying to read a review - this was one of the few D23 events I was genuinely interested in, but couldn't make it work with my schedule/travel budget.

No, I wish I could have gone, but I live in Rochester, NY and wasn't able to get out to Hollywood for this. I am looking forward to going out to California in August for the D23 Expo. I'm curious to hear what people thought too.

I'm dying to read a review - this was one of the few D23 events I was genuinely interested in, but couldn't make it work with my schedule/travel budget.

Hi, I actually did attend the event on Tuesday night. I flew down from Seattle on Monday night and left on Wednesday. The event was supposed to start at 7:30 and they said they would begin check in at 6:45. They had us wait in line outside. It looked like they were waiting for a 4:30 screening of Pirates to be done. Couldn't someone have checked the movie schedule before scheduling the event? Because of that, we weren't even let in until 7:30 and the event started late at 8 pm. I didn't enjoy standing outside in the heat for 45 minutes for an event that I supposedly had a reserved seat for. At least they went down the line prior to entering and gave us programs and wristbands for the museum after the movie.

I think the general consensus was that seeing the movie on the big screen again was great. The movie was beautiful, and the audience ate it up. The panel discussion afterwards with Kevin Smith was kind of awkward. He made a lot of self referential jokes (and not in always kid friendly language), but at least it was short. He was claiming that they wanted to keep it short because we started late.

Next we were told to meet at the Hollywood Museum which is just down the street. This is were things got out of control. At events I've been to before, you decide what merchandise you will be purchasing ahead of time, and pick it up before the event. With this event, you had to stand in line. And boy were there lines. I think every person in that theater was crammed onto the 4th floor of the museum. It quickly became hot and stuffy and crowded. When I first got to the 4th floor, everyone was standing in one line for the merchandise. But after standing in that line for awhile, there was some talk of there being more than one line for merchandise. Turns out there was a line for Creature Features items, and one for the D23 stuff. Since I wanted mostly D23 stuff, I got out of that line and had to find the D23 one. It was just a mess. Unorganized and chaotic and no one taking charge to give out information. I ended up going back to the Creature Features line again after purchasing some of the D23 items. Eventually, I did get what I wanted, but spent over an hour in line. I wasn't able to enjoy the museum or exhibits that were advertised. It was nearing midnight by the time I got out there.

I don't regret going, but it just seemed like there were so many things that weren't well planned out. And they seemed surprised and overwhelmed by the number up people wanting to buy merchandise! I probably waited in lines over 2 hours the course of the evening. Very stressful!

ChasRN - thanks so much for sharing your report on the event. Sorry to hear you didn't have a better experience and had to wait in so many lines. Uugh, I would not want to be standing in line.

Thanks, ChasRN - I'm sorry it was such a mixed bag. I'm on the East Coast so it probably wouldn't have been worth it for me and a bigger frustration.

A few questions:
Did they explain Kevin Smith's relation to the movie? He seemed like an odd choice to me since his core audience is more the college crowd.
Did they have a list/sheet of the merch? I'm just curious what additional Rocketeer things they had - that video was too short.

The only relationship seemed to be that he was a big fan of the movie, and felt that the director Joe Johnston was a huge influence on his childhood since he worked on the original Star Wars movies.

The link had all the new merchandise available. Some was at the D23 table, some at the Creature Features table. D23 also had some other miscellaneous items left over from other events. Creature Features also had some Rocketeer prints that I don't think were from Disney.

D23 members received a Rocketeer 20th patch along with the program for the event.
