Please share your stories - and what motel/hotel you were staying in...

We have been going to Florida for 20+ years and beleive me when I say that there were times that some of the places we stayed in made dumps look good, and we've never seen a roach. We've seen smaller bugs, i.e. beetles, ants, etc. but never anything even remotely resembling a roach. I guess we've been very fortunate (knock on wood) as we've never even had a problem with bed bugs, which I understand can be a real problem in some hotel/motel rooms.

"Palmetto Bugs". Sounds much nicer, don't you think? They do look like roaches, but are generally much larger (Ugh!) Personally, I can't stand them, but they do periodically come inside. I have seen them in hotels, on beaches and on boardwalks, in grocery stores, etc. Mostly just outside, and mostly at night.

I go way around them if they're outside. If they are inside, I screech and make DH put them outside where they belong.

People keep telling me they're no big deal, but........... Maybe I see them, because I'm so freaky about them!!

So far, though, I must admit, none have tried to approach me. Usually they see me & run. (It may be the screech that sends them running, tho!)

Really, I've only seen a handful, and have lived here for years, and visited frequently for many years before that.

about 5 years ago, in a fairly decent hotel! I freaked and insisted on switching rooms, the guy thought I was nuts, my hubby thought I was nuts, but too bad!! We had a baby in a playpen and the thoughts of that, ugh......But we have been back every year, and no problems, since.

Never seen a roach in all the times we have stayed in Florida....we have been 12 times and only stayed in Disney Village once. I stay at less expensive hotels off site too....and never been in one with bugs. I think that it is a common bull story that all off site places are bug infested, run down and seedy...started by those who do not stay there. I am not saying stay in dumps but most chain hotels and motels are just the same as anywhere else in the country, no dirtier or worst kept.

We have palmettos in GA, too, UGH! I've stayed in Orlando 12 times for a week apiece in Orlando in the past two years, never did the same place twice and NEVER saw one. Believe me, YOU would've heard me if I did! :earseek:

We saw one in our room at CBR. Called they came and sprayed and that was it.

We also had an extremely bad experience one year. We were driving a motor home and were having problem so we decided to stop for the night about 45 before disney. We checked into a Days Inn (I couldn't even tell you exactly where we were). My brother and I got out of the camper to check the room and when we turned the lights on they scattered everywhere. We got in the camper got our money back and drove the rest of the way to FW. It took us about 2 more hours with our mechanical problems but we made it. I still get the creepy crawlys when I think about it.

I had heard many stories of palmetto bugs and seen some in southern Fla but have never seen one in a hotel. I asked a gardener at the Raddison in Port Canaveral why I have never seen one in a hotel. He told me most hotels have a very intensive pest elimination programs which inlcude weekly spraying of all the landscaped areas. I was told they like palm trees. I have also seen many trucks around Disney resorts which say Walt Disneyworld Pest control on them.

we have never experienced any bug problems in any of the Orlando hotels.:)

Hm. Maybe we have been the only ones to experience this??!?!?! We've had ants. beetles and a huge spider in several Disney resort rooms - Disney's OKW, PO-? (DxL) and FW Homes. I also found a cute lizard inside our room at the All Stars. For roaches, there was at least one small one DEAD in the foyer at Westgate Vacation Villas. No need to spray further! ;)

We've never had any bugs inside our upper floor rooms at anyplace in FL. :)

The worst place we've stayed, regarding bugs, was an otherwise decent HoJo south of Boston. Everything looked fine... until I was relaxing in the bathtub and saw a bunch of little roaches scurrying along the bathroom floor. Yikes! Awful!

We've also had bugs in our rooms at Disney's HHI and at some very nice places in Lake Lure NC and Manhattan. :( Other than the Boston experience, these have actually been minor. With live critters, we ask the resort/hotel to spray. We were pretty upset with the FW (too many and too big - in the kids' bedroom!) and Boston incidents though!
