2042 expiration - defaults?

One reason I am glad we are not 42 owners,,,can see how it all plays out and what we will have when ours expire.

You are assuming that everything goes so well in 2042, and that nothing major changes after that, so that whatever they do in 2042 is the same they do when your resort expires! 😆

What exactly happened with that? I keep hearing it referenced but no idea what made things chaotic… or bad… or whatever happened.
Basically, DVC decided to extend the life of OKW from 2042 to 2057 and charge the owners $25 per point for the extension. At first they tried to force the owners to either pay up or sign a deed quit claiming their right to the extension, and they even canceled reservations for some owners who refused to do either. After several attorneys pointed out to them that what they did was most likely against Florida timeshare law, they backed off. But they still now require owners of 2042 deeds to sign the quit claim before they can sell their points. Reportedly, only about 25-30% of owners extended back then, but since then DVC has sold all OKW direct points as 2057, so a larger percentage of owners have extended contracts. However, when 2042 arrives, OKW will be a patchwork, because some of each building will be owned by 2057 members and part will be what DVC got back in 2042.

What happens if in 2040, you borrow all your 2041 points? So then you will free up room for those who are racing to use their points before the January 31, 2042 end date? Will everyone likewise borrow their points? What about the resorts that have a 2054/2057/2060 expiration date? They can, presumably, trade in before January 31, 2042.

This will be interesting given that we are essentially only 15 years away (16 years + a few months).

I'm already looking up 3bdrm grand villas and dreaming of our last DVC stay on our contract that ends in 2042. I would want to book a villa in one of the resorts that ends in 2042, since there will be time enough to book one of the 2060/2057/2054 resorts after 2042....

Is BWV the only 2042 resort with a villa (excepting OKW but there are the contracts that end in 2057).

Is everyone with BWV points going to the do the same, borrowing from 2041 into 2040 for the villa to go out with a bang, making the villa at BWV probably impossible to book in 2040/2041?

I don't think we know for sure what the borrowing (and banking) rules will be those last few years. I don't plan to borrow into our 2040 UY, assuming I can use up our September 2041 points on our last hurrah at BWV. But who knows what everyone else will want to do!

Technically speaking, all DVC rooms are "villas" - Disney calls them Deluxe Studio Villas, 1BR Villas, 2BR Villas, and Grand Villas. I assume you're talking about GV, and I believe OKW, VB, HHI, and BWV are the only 2042 resorts with GV.

Who knows! We may want a GV for the nights leading up to and including January 31, 2042!

It's never too early to start walking your 2041 grand villa reservation. Gotta lock in that ressie soon! :rolleyes1

I expect DVC will modify the banking, borrowing and possibly the non-owner booking rules the last few years in order to allow owners the maximum amount of time to use their points. I’m sure they recognize that December UY owners, for instance, are likely to want to borrow their 2041 points. OTOH I’m hoping I’ll still be alive so that I can use all my September 2041 points for a BW view villa in January 2042, with the last night being January 31, 2042!
I just got done counting how many points I would need for the grand villa for the last week and I got 587. I don't have enough BWV points for that. Plus, I have a decision to make if I stay alive that long. I own at 4 of the 2042 resorts, so I'll have lots of goodbyes to say!

If you pay 1/12th of the maintenance fees, then would you get 1/12th of your allotment of points?
No, you'll get your last full points allotment in 2041.
I'm hoping they throw in free scooter rentals on request for 2041 bookings!
I'll just need to get to my balcony. My birthday is in January and I'll be 89 that year. Hopefully I'll make it but I doubt I'll actually drive to Disney on that trip. My youngest DD will be 50 and maybe she will humor me. Or my oldest who is on the deed - she's hoping I'll keep managing the points (and paying the dues) until the end. I will.

My count is that I have 18 full allotments of points to come. Use year is October so 2024 to 2041. It's still coming and time is flying! Make the most of it!

My birthday is in January too, but I’m a few years older than you. So a seat on the balcony overlooking the Boardwalk will be fine with me too. And it would be nice to have our family with us, which is why I want the GV!

I expect that the last night we can stay on points will be January 31. When we wake up we should be just as much a guest as the guests waking up to check out of VGF on February 1. The difference will be that we won’t own any part of BWV that morning; it will have new owners (Disney, or who knows).
Umh? Gives me an idea. I might start a Crowd Source page and become the new owner. As long as we’re speculating….Anyone wanna join?

I don't forsee Disney handling this any other way but to protect their brand. Accommodations will be made allowing everyone to use their final year of allotted points. DVC holds back a percentage of all resorts don't they do, when I booked my "Welcome Home Stay' it was BLT standard view well past the 7 month window. I bet we see some magic made to exhaust all of those points for one final vacation for everyone.

Maybe we'll see "Final Stay" magic?
