With the new year just around the corner, I thought I would go ahead and get 2026's destashing thread started for anyone who wants to either set a goal or just create a placeholder for next year. Here is to everyone who wants to lighten their load a bit an dmake things more enjoyable at home!

I've already started a pile for donation in 2026. Due to tax changes, it appears in 2026 people who don't itemize could deduct up to $1,000 in charitable donations so I figured I'd wait and a take in after the 1st of the year.

I don't know if I have a specific goal yet for decluttering... all I know is we have got to get rid of things. Our house is probably my biggest source of stress.

Mine is too. I got my mom moved into a retirement apartment type place this year after my dad passed and a lot of stuff I need to sort thru from their house ended up at mine and it's driving me crazy.

I can’t wait to declutter my closet. I’m redoing my bedroom closet sometime soon. Once the Xmas gifts are out of my office closet My plan is to pull everything out of the bedroom closet and move it to the office while declutterring.

We moved in 2021 and we had SO much crap to declutter- it took about 300 boxes/bags between garbage and donations, PLUS I made a few thousand on marketplace selling some of the better stuff. I vowed to stay clutter free, and while we are mostly clutter free, some of the closets have started to creep up again. I'd like to work on that this year... I don't have a ton to get rid of, but I bet I can declutter 100-200 items between clothes, board games, etc. Possibly even more.

If anyone needs motivation, I LOVE Natalie Bennett on YouTube- she has a "Messy to Minimal" series- watch the older content first to see when she had a lot more clutter, now it's more maintenance.

When we moved 3-1/2 years ago, we stuffed everything into boxes. And they stayed in box until this past spring. We started going through, threw away a ton, donated some and kept some in boxes. We later moved those boxes into a storage unit we secured. However, we decided the $90/month for the storage unit could be spent in better ways. So we canceled it. We have to get it cleaned out this week. So we may be going through more stuff to get rid of more. A lot of it is keepsake type stuff (toys from when DW and I were younger, stuff our grandparents/parents passed on, etc). So it's stuff we don't want to get rid of. But I'm sure there's some stuff. I guess my eBay listings will go up (I don't like to sell on Marketplace because I'm afraid to meet strangers in public when money's involved).

Ok I'm setting a goal: 365 items in 2026... One item per day. We have Greendrop in our area that picks up on Fridays... I'm going to schedule a pick up each month so that it keeps the stuff moving out. I'm going to use this post to keep me accountable.

I'm going with @Bellex917's rationale of one item a day and will set mine to 365. I already have a good start for donation, which I was planning on waiting for the deduction next year, but see that is only for cash. I'll still wait and donate in 2026 so it counts towards my items :) On another note, I also need to organize better. I have a drawer of photos that you buy at various attractions. I scrapbook (digitally) and usually include in my albums for that trip. But I just ordered a traditional photo album and want to get all the pictures in there. We also just have the same random stuff all over the house. I don't know why we have various earbud type devices in 5 locations throughout the house (and we each use only one pair) so it's stuff like that to get them all in one spot and get rid of the ones we don't need.

so it's stuff like that to get them all in one spot and get rid of the ones we don't need.

and this is what I've found is the best method to use to purge. go room to room, space to space with one category in mind and gather it into one box/container/area-then go through it. so much stuff is hung on to b/c you're unsure if you have one/a backup/a second backup :teeth: so if you go through all of them you can identify which ones you actually need/want. we did this with cords and cables and other electronics of the like. ended up realizing how many were for long gone devices (proprietary), some were dangerously frayed. some we realized would serve us best with one household/backup/one in each vehicle-the rest (usable) went into a bag to goodwill (people search high and low for some outdated cords). when I would come across a random remote it went into an 'electronics junk drawer'-which we went through one day to eliminate a whole lot. I got rid of LOTS of stuff when we redid our primary closet-when everything came out and it smacked me in the face at how much was squirreled away it was easier to purge (same when we had to empty all our bathroom cabinets to replace the counters-ooooooh the stuff I did'nt realize was in there::yes::).

we did pretty well clearing some stuff out last year-i think this summer i'm going to get dh to help me organize the 2 sheds a bit better. we purged everything last year but stuff still looks kerfuffled and I know if we just straightened out stuff a bit better I would recognize it's all used and useful.

Alright my official decluttering goal is get rid of another 500 items this year!

I feel like the more I do this the easier and harder it becomes. Easier because we want less stuff, harder because we get down to items that have some sort of preceived meaning or preceived usefulness even on items that are not. You know the "just in case we need them" items.

0 / 500 Items
0% of Goal

I could probably do 365 items on books alone! Luckily, my doctor's office sells donated, used books (charity that benefits changes month to month), so I have a place to take them. Salvation Army would work, too--maybe I'll alternate, so I look less like a hoarder.

DH and I just moved Mom and Dad to AL. We have been working nonstop to help them for almost two years and finally got them moved about 10 days ago. Since, we have been cleaning out their house. I had no idea of the amount of stuff my Mom has saved in the past decade since we moved them from their "big" house! Their 1600+ sf new home has a ton of cabinets in the kitchen and one of the baths along with four closets and one large storage room the size of a bedroom. Many trips to the dump and Goodwill along with all the things we gave away, we still have two closets to empty and we move on to repairs.. Do not do this to your kids!

We are not spring chickens and have to deal with two cars, getting the house emptied, cleaned and a few repairs done which will take us about two months over Christmas and New Years with our son and DIL (they were so sweet!) visiting from far away. I had to manage which furniture went with them and direct the movers on moving day. Exhausting!

We have a large home but it is carefully decorated and we donate anything that doesn't match our vibe. We are not afraid to let go! We plan to sell the home fully furnished in the future with only our clothes, personal stuff and a few pieces of furniture to go with us. I can't emphasize how much "stuff" can affect relationships. If you don't need it or use it or wear it LET IT GO!

:crazy2:

Great plan, I'm going to try that. I love organizing and cleaning. DH not as much, you should see his face when we talk about what we'll do on a weekend day and I tell him we're organizing, but I need his help to go through stuff. But I know he has no desire to do it for hours like I would so I make it realistic like an hour we work. The other thing with the cords is, I have realized I am ordering extra when I don't need to. Can't find a particular cable, it's cheap on Amazon and will be here tomorrow. There's no reason to just do that because I don't know where something is.

I'm just tagging along. DH and I are in our 70s, and we've lived in our house for almost 25 years. When we had work done recently, and had to move a lot of stuff out of the way, we vowed that decluttering is a major goal for this year.

I could not agree more. I helped a friend go through his mom's stuff then we had a family member's. it was AWFUL (gets worse if you find out they have storage lockers :crazy2: ). after that I made a point of going through all our paperwork-figured out what we needed to keep/had the rest shredded. categorized into what needed to be kept for our lifetime/what might be needed to settle things/what could be shredded. now boxes in the safe are labeled. boxes in a storage area of our house that I might need but can go when we are gone that no one will need have large stickers within the shape of flames-sign to the kids to 'burn, burn, burn-don't even bother going through it'.

We have 11 tubs of Christmas decor. Not to mention the tree, yard decor, etc. We used stuff from 2 tubs this year lol. We’ve got 3 large tubs of original hallmark ornaments from the 70s-90s still in original boxes. They were handed down by DWs grandmother who worked for Hallmark during the time. Obviously we can’t get rid of those. But we’re going to try and purge some of the other stuff. Like I have a whole village I didn’t use that I want to get rid of. Might put it on eBay now that the season is over.

What do you mean by obviously we can’t get rid of them? If they are in a tub and not on display what purpose are they serving?
They were handed down from her grandmother. Her grandmother used to display them every Christmas. I'd be divorced if I tried to sell/give away even a single one. Same thing with other heirlooms that were handed down to us by grandparents and parents. That's just stuff you can't get rid of.

For example, I have a framed US flag that flew over the US Capitol that was presented to my grandfather. It's in a box right now because we don't have anywhere to display it. But we're never getting rid of it, just like we're never getting rid of the framed piece with all of his service medals.
