I've always stalked the sites to book as soon as they open up. It's usually about a year out, but I start checking every morning from like 370 days out just in case!Thank you so muchThat's some great advice to get me started! I'll definitely look into seats.aero.
Do you have any issues booking far in advance? And do your connecting flights link to your long haul? Having separate bookings has always worried me.
Doing it that way, you can't book connecting flights. I just make sure to leave HEAPS of time between each leg - usually we make it into a stopover so we've got at least a night or two before the next flight. The only time we had same day flights on this last trip was MCO - LAX - SIN, but we were on the first flight out of MCO arriving at LAX at about 10am, with our departing flight not until 10:30pm. So even if our flight had been cancelled, we would have heaps of time to get ourselves to LAX on a different flight/airline. The afternoon flight actually would have been perfect timing, getting into LAX at about 7:30pm, but we weren't willing to risk it in case there were any issues.
