2025 Destash Time to Heave or Leave it

Remodel is just about done and we bought new furniture. My hairdresser just turned her basement into a man cave for her husband and she is coming this morning to pick up our old furniture. It’s in great shape just not the right size/color for our new space. Couch, loveseat, chair, ottoman, and two side tables gone to a new home!

the only thing better than decluttering is when someone comes over and happily takes it away for you!

not major decluttering but the back to school thread inspired me to go through the wealth of pencils and pens and erasers I inherited from my kids at the end of each school year back the day-tossed out allot of unused but totally unusable stuff (dried out pens, non functioning erasers). pulled out some stuff from both of our sheds and finally labeled the drawers on one so we stop repurchasing the same odds and ends of small hardware items (told my husband to check there before defaulting to the hardware store). I've got 2 containers of old electronic cords and such-dh will go through it with me tomorrow and whatever can go will go/what can stay can take up less room.

July was a pretty decent month to get rid of some stuff. I was able to get my outside storage shed cleaned and organized, so a bunch of stuff left from there and then some odds and ends from the house as well!. Overall, not as much as I wanted to get rid of this month but still not too bad. looking forward to getting rid of at least the same amount in Aug before returning back to school and regular work days.

it took about a week and multiple runs of the dishwasher but............what started out with me going through 3 kitchen cabinets that held glasses and coffee cups and travel mugs and water bottles evolved to going through an additional 2 tall 4 shelf barrister bookcases that were full of barware and a few vases. I held on to one single vase and tossed the rest (cheap-no value to anyone, likely would have broken if I tried to transport to charity shop). I pared the stuff in the kitchen down to what reasonably fits into 2 cabinets (I could probably toss some more but it's hard letting go of the stuff the kids made or have their photos on from decades ago ). most of the rest was tossed.

THE BARWARE-sorry to any of you with college kids but....it is my goal to contribute to their inevitable delinquencyi have sets of glassware and the mixing/shaking/stirring stuff for margaritas and martinis and hiballs, a couple of dozen of what I thought were strictly red wine glasses (the really large goblet type) until we were watching a reality show the other night and saw that younger people seem to use them to drink all forms of alcohol, a few dozen shot glasses to suit anyone's taste. prefer beer? pint glasses, a growler, octoberfest style steins. want to do a foo-foo brunch? we got your champagne glasses (or a double complete set/brand new/unused of Shrek glasses-holds more champs). we got flasks, we got shakers, we got pitchers....

I live very near a college town and see the college kids rummaging through stores looking for drinkware and bar stuff so I washed all mine and the oldest kid is going to list everything on facebook marketplace. those students can outfit their apartments for next to nothing and I gained 9 shelves worth of open space.

I managed to throw out 59 items from the kitchen.. woot!!!! September is going to be a huge project for me. I am taking on the master closet. I told hubby that we are taking everything out of the closet, painting the closet, and decluttering before putting anything back.

good for you!!! it's amazing how much stuff a kitchen aquires over the years. when my oldest moved out I was able to outfit allot of their kitchen and what was unwanted went to goodwill where hopefully some other student in their first apartment was able to use it. you might find that you actually enjoy your master closet project-when we had ours redone a handful of years ago we had to empty it and I was amazed at the stuff I found (check every pocket and shake every wallet/purse before it gets donated or tossed). we cleared so much stuff out and even ended up with an entirely new category of clothes-'thrash and trash'-its an open plastic container of stuff that's kept in the laundry room adjacent to the garage for dh and I to pull from if we are doing a project likely to end up damaging clothes (painting, dh working with oil or solvents, working under sappy trees). we pull from those clothes to wear for the projects and feel no remorse in tossing them.

August was a mish/mash of random things/areas of the house. Mostly it was random/small project decluttering. All in all more stuff left the house than came in so that is a major win

After 6 months the remodel is finished and things are mostly put away. This means I can start declutter again. I had things everywhere during the remodel.

I spent yesterday in the basement and went through 1 room (my basement is divided in two rooms. I didn’t count but my guess is I’m tag sale/donating/tossed 300 items.

I had a half day today to I organized my canning jars. I didn’t get rid of anything but it looks much better.

Hoping to go through all my gift wrap supplies before recycling day (lots of old shirt boxes I can recycle). DH was shocked how much progress I made.

Basement cleaning weekend 2! Spent some time over the weekend cleaning the basement. I would say between garbage and tag sale we are removing 500 items. Whatever doesn’t sell on Saturday we will donate.

I still need to organize my bakeware, go through my holiday decorations, and clean out 4 drawers to get rid of 2 end tables. This feels fantastic!

Today was tag sale day! About 500 items are gone! Unfortunately an antique table and chairs didn’t sell so that went back in the basement (it was the only thing we kept) until I can figure out a plan. Several people at the tag sale suggested I take pictures and check with a furniture consignment shop in the next town. If they like it they will pick it up which solves my lack of truck issue.

September has been a huge win in our house! I took sections of clothing from the walk in closet and sat on the bed. It really forced us to decide - keep, donate, or garbage. I am about 1/2 way through the closet and have gotten rid of 118 items of clothing. Hubby and I made a promise to each other - when we purchase something new - something must be donated or thrown out! The sections of the closet that are finished is my motivation to finish it!

I went through all of my tshirts today and I am getting rid of 30. I was hoping to go through my sweaters and sweatshirts but it is to warm to try them all on. Some progress is better than none.

in prepping for winter we rid ourselves of a decent amount of old planters that were too brittle to reuse, some odds and ends of old garden equipment, an old broken wheel barrel, and a pile of old nails/nuts and bolts/odds and ends when we cleared out some holders/containers/'organizers' in the sheds.

I went through holiday decorations today. I got rid of 3 bins of Christmas decorations and 1 bin of fall/halloween decor.
