Today is the first time I’ve clicked into this thread and it’s such a funny coincidence. With both of my college-aged children home for the holiday, I devised a plan to start turning their bedrooms from high school bedrooms to adult bedrooms. I placed a cardboard box in each room and instructed them that the cardboard box needed to be filled before they left. It could be items to donate or to take to their college apartments with them.
My son fought this project bitterly, complaining there was no reason to remove anything from his room - Including the clothes I pointed out were now two sizes too small for him. My daughter, on the other hand, excitedly invited me into her room as she sorted through drawer after drawer, sharing memories of every little thing - including her socks, as she decided which pairs would be donated, and which ones would be going back to college with her. She couldn’t wait to have some other little girl get her hand-me-downs.
This is exactly how they acted as young children when they were tasked with choosing which toybox toys to donate.
Isn’t it crazy how personalities differ when it comes to letting go of “things”.
