Not having done the RnR even though they have one in San Antonio, do they really pick up people who are unable to run any more and take them a couple of miles or so up the course and let them cross the finish line ?![]()
It's right there in the FAQs.
I personally have absolutely ZERO problem with people doing that, and I don't have a problem with how rundisney does it. I've never had to use the options and hope to never use them, but I don't mind that the options are there.
Part of the fee for events pays for medals and shirts. If one doesn't get a medal, then one is paying relatively more for the experience than another person is. And that irritates me. I have no need to make events into some elite nonsense; if I wanted to be part of that I would have tried to be an Olympics contender. I'm just a person, and the events I participate in are for normal people. Yes there will be winners; those winners are elite and I'll likely never meet them. I was just reading about an event in St Thomas called 8tuffmiles. Shirt and medal are after the finish; you must finish to get them. I always plan to finish, even when I'm not as trained as I wanted to be, but I doubt I'd sign up for that. It's just too snobby for me to be interested in.
Someone had a sign at RnR yesterday that said "run your own race". I think that applies to this issue. If someone gets a medal when they didn't finish, or finish the whole distance on their feet, that's their race. It's not my race. It's theirs. THEY know what happened. Who cares what we think of it? Who cares if someone has a medal but they skipped a mile or so of? I have a feeling (though I do not know) that it would be marked in some way on the finish times list.
The other thing RnR Vancouver last year (maybe every year, not sure!) did that I loved (and did take advantage of) was that for those of us with certain (long) time expectations and who were in the last corral, we could choose to start our race half an hour before official start time. So OUR corral was actually in front of the elites. It was lovely for two reasons; it gave us a chance at finishing a bit earlier in the day than we otherwise would (which helps out the organizers and city as well) AND it allowed us to see the elites. OH gracious that was so exciting, to see those young men and women just flying by. Very very inspiring. Those people are on a plane going home by the time I finish, so I never see them.
The elites had to have known the situation since they could see us, and we knew the situation, but you could tell that a bunch of middle of the pack people had not read all of their race info b/c they were being quite rude as they finally caught up to us and were wondering why walkers and walk/run and just slower runners were in front of them. Lots of passing on the right (when there was almost no room on the right) going on at a certain point...
Always read ALL the race info, even if you think it doesn't apply to you!
