2016 Destash - The more things you own, the more they own you

Count me In!!!! I love this idea and though I might be a little late to the thread I already got a jump start on the decluttering. My landlord did not pay his taxes so now I have to find a place to live which is a little hard with 4 kids on my budget. Right now things are going into storage and I am only storing what we need. I am donating a lot, giving away things on Facebook, and also selling a few things on Facebook. I just got rid of 3 huge bags of cloths that was all my 8 years old. Who really needs 50 t-shirts. I was able to sell them for $30 that went to my Disney Fund jar. I got rid of a few movies but that is really hard for me especially since a lot of them came from my brother who passed away in 2013. Another hard thing for me to get rid of is books but I am trying my best to get rid of at least 1/3.

Good luck!

I feel ya on the books. It's so hard! I wish there was a way to download the ones I own to my kindle. I love books and there are some id never part with but some I would be more apt to get rid of the physical copy if I could have the digital copy without having to repay for it.

Today has been productive! 3 garbage bags, two boxes, plus some large items are all ready for donation! I also went through some totes and condensed 3 totes down to just 1! Threw away lots of junk..

I ordered new bunks for tqo of my kiddos. Gave away my sons crib/toddler bed to a needy mom with an infant. He and his sister share a room for now and she had a bed. Got the bunks and one mattress for under $300. Their bedroom was also a sort of storage room but it is now cleaned out and organized and ready for the new beds to arrive.

Whenever we can afford to move to a bigger house, the bunks can be split to individual beds. Both kids are excited about the changes and newly organized room! :)

I helped my mom unpack from her move so I lost my entire Saturday afternoon and evening. My room still looks fantastic tho!

I did get DS organized for track which starts on the 7th. He pulled out two shirts that are too small so I guess there is that.

I got the kitchen cleaned up and then I messed it up again baking fruit desserts. I'm hoping to get these into my diet daily instead of ice cream.

I'm hoping I get more done next weekend because my living room is a wreck.

Home from work today! Trying to get a lot done, but not making much progress away from the computer (but at least that is paid work for my second job!). Anyhow, decided I will ask for ANOTHER offer from Replacements.com for the china I need to get rid of. I passed on their previous offer and realize now that I was STUPID to do that! Hoping that the next offer is for at least the same amount. I have reduced the asking price of this china multiple times on the local FB yard sale and now I realize that if I had sold some of the pieces to Replacments when I had the chance, I would have made MUCH MORE than I am currently asking for the whole set! Dumb, dumb, dumb! At this point I am willing to take nearly any offer they give me just to get it out the door! I've spent FAR too much time trying to sell these on FB and on Ebay and despite the fact that they seem to command a fairly high price on Ebay and on Replacements, I cannot seem to sell mine! Time for them to be GONE!

Also plan to hit the kids bathroom closet in the next 30 minutes.... was planning to do it over the weekend, but time got away from me. Not a lot to purge (since DD would kill me since most of it is hers), but it desperately needs to be straightened and organized!

BBL to report on any progress!...............P

So.... kids bathroom closet, DONE! Only trashed a few really ewwy lotions and leaky things. Also consolidated some stuff and just generally ORGANIZED it! I essentially have half of a large shelf EMPTY now! And DS can actually get to the little bit of stuff that is HIS without having to dig past his sister's stuff! :rolleyes1

Also got a QUICK reply from Replacements.com. The offer on the dinner plates is higher, but unfortunately they aren't buy many of the other pieces I have. When all is said and done, if they take it and give me the offered prices I should NET (after what I'm sure will be a VERY HIGH shipping price) about $100 (maybe a bit more..... not sure if I have salad plates or bread and butter plates until I measure them). But since the entire set is currently getting NO INTEREST on FB for $50 (reduced from my original $250), I'll take it! The only drawback is if I sell parts and pieces to Replacements, I end up with just parts and pieces myself here, rather than a full set. oh well.

Off to be a bit more productive before dinner!.................P

Went through DS's playroom yesterday and ended up with 5 bags/boxes to donate to Purple Heart and 2 bags of trash. He probably won't even notice all of the stuff that I got rid of since he has way too much! Now if I could just get him to get rid of some of stuffed animal collections- Smurfs, Pokémon, Minions, etc...You can barely find his floor! And I cleaned up the garage on Sun while it was warmer here. Still have so much to do though!

I've been keeping up with the 40 bags in 40 days challenge. Lots of shredding of old papers. We acquired my dad's shredder when he moved from assisted living to the nursing home, so now we have 2. One is on the main floor where the mail comes in, and one is in the basement near the filing cabinet. I seem to get lots more shedding done (and done more quickly) when I don't have to carry a pile of papers from 1 floor to another!

Took two loads of stuff to Goodwill. I still have so much more to go through and purge, but I feel like I am making a little progress. Also went through and cleaned off the pile of junk on my desk! It looks way more organized now!!

Even though we are NOT moving any time soon.. I am trying to pretend like we are. When I go through stuff, I ask myself, "Would I pack this in a box and pay to move it across the country?" Most of the time, the answer is no. I have moved across several states before and we got rid of a TON of stuff when we did. Something about that mindset make purging your belongings a little easier! :)

I feel like this will be an ongoing process. It is actually a little intimidating when I look at the big picture! I am trying not to get overwhelmed by it and just go through it one box/bag at a time..

Last weekend we pulled the Mini out of the building to get it ready for photos and the guy is coming the 12th to get it!! YAY! DH has been boxing up parts a little bit every day to go with the car. While he took pics the boys and I cut down so huge cardboard boxes and got those in recycling. We also did a quick sort of the bikes out there and 99% of those are probably going to go to rummage sale, the kids have outgrown all but one.
Today, Dh is going in to look at new glasses, and when we get back I'm going to sort more scrap supplies. I'm just tired of all the stuff in my room. I think I'm going to turn it back into an actual dining room. I'm also going to sort one bin in the basement. I need to keep moving forward on that.

We are moving in a couple of years and I am going through the house like a fiend listing things on CL. The other day we went through our teapot collection - everyone got to vote on keep, save or neutral- we revoted on the neutral ones and have cut the collection down to 1/3 - so we have 8 pots left not too bad.

Purging is put on hold because I have to go out of town for a funeral this weekend. I did load up a box of stuff as I was cleaning yesterday though. Just not tackling any new, big projects yet! I think I will focus on the kitchen next. I think I am going to get rid of some of the cookbooks that aren't my favorite. I have a lot of extra "stuff" in the cabinets that I should probably get rid of.. It has been awhile since I have gone through and cleaned/organized them! We also have some Rubbermaid drawers in the kitchen that holds the kids' craft stuff.. it really needs to be cleaned out and organized as well.

Love this thread! :thumbsup2

I finally started de-cluttering this week. The plan is to focus on one room per week. This week, I'm working on the master bedroom. I de-cluttered my dresser and most of my DH's dresser so far. I still have a hope chest, the closet, and 1 dresser drawer to go through. I should have all of that done by tomorrow afternoon.

I got rid of 2 smalls bags of garbage, and we have 1 large bag of clothes ready for a Goodwill drop off. Yay! :goodvibes

Took a huge bin of outgrown kids clothes and a bag with some puzzles, books and toys to Once Upon a Child this morning. Hopefully they will take a fair amount of it! I'll find out when I go back in a couple hours. Already thinking about having a garage sale this summer. We had one last year and didn't do as well as I would have hoped, but I'm willing to try it again!

Me too!! We moved into a new house a little over a year ago and we really decluttered before that move. But I really want to do this yearly so that we don't end up with a lot of crap. Spring seems like a good time to do this. Also, for the PP who worked with Replacements, I wonder how that process works? I have a pretty nice set of Gorham good china that we never use. Actually, it was from my first marriage. I am struggling with whether or not to keep the stuff. I'm torn because it was given to me from my family (ex's family didn't do this sort of thing) so I don't really feel like it's very tied to the previous marriage but we really don't ever use "good china" so I'm afraid that it's just taking up space. What to do ...

I signed up and have been steadily working on it. Are you on the Facebook page? Wow, it has literally taken over my newsfeed. I am at the point, that I am not reading them, it is too much. I think I am going to delete myself from the page. But then again, it is suppose to be only till the end of Lent.

It did totally blow up my FB page at first, but it did settle down after a while. The page does stay up after Lent, but the moderator doesn't post the daily check ins. I will see how it goes. It has inspired me to stay off FB and declutter, so that is good.

It doesn't hurt to get a quote! Just go over to the Replacements.com page and click on the "Sell to Us" link. You tell them what you have for china (brand/pattern) and they will send you a PDF file with their "offer" (i.e. how much they are paying for each piece and what they will buy/won't buy and the FAQs about condition, etc.). WARNING.... DO NOT look at the SELLING price for your china because the BUYING price will just depress you!! I totally understand that they have costs involved in owning/running their business.... but it kind of irks me when I sell them a dinner plate for $14 PLUS I pay for packing and shipping.... and they sell it for $70! But since I couldn't even get a NIBBLE on these pieces on Ebay or the FB yard sale, even at a fraction of what they sell for on Replacements, I figure I'll take the money for now. Debating about packing up the pieces they aren't buying right now and putting the in the attic and trying again in a year or two.... but that kind of goes against the "decluttering" I'm trying to do!

Best of luck..................P

Home with a day to myself today..... so I plan to PURGE and SELL! I updated a few "for sale" posts and just sold $23 worth of scrapbooking supplies! Off to see if any of my books can get me trade-in credit on Amazon!.........P

Wow, lucky! I love a day home alone!

I love the idea of pretending to move. Dab and I are planning to move sometime after the kids are in college. So we're about 3 years out from the youngest leaving then we'll see how things are going after that. Anyway, I want to stay on top of stuff so we aren't dumping 15 years of junk when we go.

I am off for spring break this week and getting a new kitchen floor finally. I am so excited!! There is a list of projects I want to do and will be posting progress to keep me accountable.
