2014 Grand Floridian Resort & Villas FAQ: Vacationing in Grand Style!

Hi everyone. Thanks for this thread, I've read it cover to cover!

My boyfriend and I will be heading to the GF for the first time in late Sept. The resort was originally going to be a surprise, but I ended up having to spill the beans for work reasons. BUT, he still doesn't know that we are booked CL (SL), and I'm definitely keeping that as a surprise!! pixiedust: So, all that said, I have a few questions:

- How does check in work? We've stayed CL at WL in the past and someone met us downstairs to take us to the room. But since SL is a separate building, do we just check in at the main lobby and head over there ourselves? We'll be coming in on DME, and I'm wondering when it will dawn on him that we are CL! I don't think he even knows that SL is CL only, so we could theoretically get all the way to the pastries before he realized!!!

- Going through the thread, I've read some not great reviews about SL. They mostly seem to pertain to overcrowding in the lounge, which I wasn't worried about since our dates (28Sep - 04Oct) are typically the "slow" season. But now I've been reading about the WL and Poly refugees and am getting a bit more concerned with a full GF. Is it really bad enough that I should consider upgrading to the main building?

Thanks!!

Welcome!:goodvibes LOL about your BF not knowing until you get to the pastries.

As trish posted, you will be met at the DME curb, no worries there. In the off chance you are not (and it has happened, it is possible there will be a lot of people checking into CL at the same time and not enough CMs), just walk up to the CL podium that is usually stationed near the doors, ask a valet or go to the front desk and say you are checking into club level. They will call someone to come meet you.:flower3:

Do not worry about SL, it is wonderful. I was unaware there were a lot of bad reviews of SL on this thread - I normally post about our great experiences there, as do others, and I don't recall any major issues being reported. Mornings can get a bit rushed, but I have never felt it was any more so than the CL rooms at any of the other resorts. I have found it less so than either WL or YC, for instance, as those lounges have their food service in a rather small room - SL's is at one end of the building lobby, so it feels more airy, to me.

Good luck, I have a terrible time keeping a vacation secret.;)

Hi everyone! I stayed up til 1:30am last night reading all about the GF.

I booked yesterday with the RO discount for a GV room 11/30-12/8. We have had many wdw trips, but this is our 1st GF trip. Loved the BC and easy access to Epcot last year. Looking forward to easy MK access and all the gorgeous Christmas decor at GF this year!

What is your favorite date night restaurant at GF, or on the monorail line? I don't think V&A is of interest to us, but any others? Also, anyone know if the never land club is open or closed for remodel? Does CR have a kids club?

We love Citricos and I would suggest it over Narcoossee's for a date night, though both are wonderful. Citricos has a less busy atmosphere, fewer small children, it seems to me. (not that kids are a bad thing or unwelcome there, just that it makes for a quieter restaurant in general) Don't dismiss V&A, it is incredible!!:teeth:

I would have suggested Cali Grill, but just read the new menu the other day and wow! The prices have really gone up. If you have the DDP, it's not a big deal, but paying out of pocket - ouch.

Don't know about the CR and a kids club, but I thought the Neverland Club was reopened as of this past spring? I'll have to check that out over on the Poly FAQ.

That cute pool with the Alice in Wonderland play structure and slides, what ages can play there? Is it only for toddlers or for children under 10 or so? I think my kids would love it, but I want to find out if they are too big for it before I show it to them. :cutie: They are not the best swimmers yet, and they may need kick boards for anything too deep, if those are allowed in the big pool.

Thanks,
Anne

The Alice Splash Zone seems to be fun for all ages, I have not heard or read of any specific restrictions. Here is a link to photos of the splash area, and there are kids who look to be 8-10 or so playing. I know I've seen kids of all sizes in the area.

Let me tell you how grateful I am to you ladies this morning! I was on the phone with the TA until 10 last night, and there was *nothing* nothing! she could do. No discounts no FD. I was bummed and debating canceling the whole trip over how it went down... then this morning I read this board and decided to try on my own. I GOT it! Saved $750. Of course I wasn't allowed to change the TA reservation, so I made a new one. I'll cancel her reservation and use the one I just made. :) Thank you all so much! pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:

:cheer2:

We also used a TA and when the free dining and RO discounts were released in May it was as if she didn't want to apply it for us. First she told us it would not apply because we are going during Food and Wine Festival. I don't think we will ever use a TA again for Disney. I realize they work on commission and when our package price goes down so does their pay...but still it is their job. I am curious to see what your TA says when you cancel. ;)

....

I think if you use a Disney specialized TA that is Ear Marked (recognized by Disney) you wouldn't have that problem. This is what they do, and often they will contact you about upcoming discounts. Sometimes they know when one is coming out a couple of days before release. They will automatically apply discount without even asking you. I'm surprised that you had this experience. It's not typical of Disney Authorized Vacation Planners. Which is why I'm thinking the one you used wasn't.
I've used some super TAs for Disney travel.

THIS. We don't use a TA often, but if we need or want to, we always use a Disney Specialist - regular TAs do not have enough knowledge of the very complicated WDW vacation planning!

Thanks for posting this :flower3:. I thought I read somewhere on these boards about a maximum height restriction, but maybe it was for something else at another resort :confused3 (or I maybe I'm confusing it with something totally different :rotfl::rotfl:).

That TA wasn't doing her job or didn't have much Disney knowledge! Our Disney authorized vacation planners agency always automatically applies discounts. If a client can save hundreds by changing resorts we let them know that too. It's part of the job.

I found this on the DVC board -- I remembered my niece being told she was too big at 4'6".

This is available for 'pool hopping' as of now right? If it available in October, I think it would be worth a hop over from BLT for my kids :)

Note that in november when we were staying at vgf they were strictly enforcing the height requirement for the splash area. My dd had just turned 8 and is on the taller side for her age. The lifeguards would not let her play in the alice and wonderland play area. I think the height cut-off is 48 inches so you may want to double check that and make sure it wont be an issue before hopping there if the splash area is important to you.

I'm sure you did read it, thanks for posting about it!:goodvibes Unfortunately, I was skimming when I posted this morning, didn't notice you had said you read there was a height requirement.

I wonder if the lifeguards are simply enforcing a policy, or if there is a "rules board" near the Alice play area, similar to those for the pools?:scratchin I've never noticed - but then, we don't use the splash areas, no little chillin's!

Thanks, Tom!!:thumbsup2 Good to see you. Sorry about your niece, that stinks.

I read in the Resort boards from various posters that during their Poly stay while the Volcano pool is closed they will be provided a shuttle to the GF to use the pools. I haven't been to the GF since the villas, but I would imagine the introduction of another 120+ rooms adversely impact the crowd level in the pools. If it is true the GF now has to absorb guests from the Poly...it sounds like the pools may be packed. Doesn't really feel "deluxe" if they are cramming in too many guests to the pool areas.

So 2 questions:
1. Does anyone have any experiences with the crowd levels (at pools and in general throughout the resort) with the increased guests from the villas?

2. I know it hasn't happened yet, but has there been any communication regarding Poly guests granted access to the GF pool during their outage?

:beach:

Thanks

No worries, I wasn't even sure what I read about a height requirement was even for the GF . It's hard to keep up with all the changes and requirements for certain things as so many of them are happening at the same time :rolleyes2.

That's a good question about the life guards and/or a "rules board". A lot of people post pics of the boards for the pools, but I've never seen one for the splash area :confused3. We haven't been since the splash area opened, but I probably wouldn't notice anyway since like you, we don't have any little ones either ;).

Hi everyone! We are back from a 8 night/9 day stay at GF SL! :cool1: I thought that I’d break down the resort in the “Pros/Cons” format for those that might be interested. This is quite lengthy but I thought it might be helpful to those interested in the GF SL!

Before I do so, let me set the background. For this trip, it was myself, DH and DD3. :dance3: This is the 5th time DD3 has to been to WDW – once via DCL, 3 times at Poly (2 of those were CL) and 1 time AKL CL. Some of my experiences may be swayed by our previous experiences with DD at the other resorts so forgive me if I do some comparisons throughout.

Let’s start with the check-in experience::surfweb:
PROS: We had a fabulous CM walk us from our DME bus to the SL building. He greeted us as we got off the bus and shocked DD with greeting her by name immediately! Got to love the MB’s for this! He gave us an animated and lively tour as we walked through to the SL building and really got us so excited and pumped up – mind you, it was 10am and we had been up since 2:30am for our early flight – so his enthusasim was really refreshing! I only wish I could remember his name! When we arrived in the SL building, he gave us a golden KTTW card just to use to get in and out of the SL building because our room wasn’t quite ready yet and therefore our MB wouldn’t open to the door yet.

CONS: The check-in desk is in the middle of the lounge – literally. Smack-dab in the middle of the lounge. I felt uncomfortable giving credit card information there and felt weird checking in amidst everyone eating breakfast. At this point it was after 10am (breakfast going until 10:30am) and we felt like we couldn’t get up from the desk to get food during this time. The CM wasn’t very warm and welcoming – much more business-like than we are used to – and the process took almost a half hour – even with checking in online and our room NOT being ready! We quickly ran over to the breakfast offerings to eat before they were cleared away. I think we had 5 minutes to spare! DD3 was tired of waiting and was hungry and it was very hard to keep her happy through the check-in experience. We didn’t ask to get food while he was doing the work but we really didn’t feel like it was an option either. I’ve never had the check-in take so long and I have no idea why it was so long. At the end, he said our room wouldn’t be ready until between 1 – 3pm – so that was kinda disappointing as were exhausted – but we were prepared for that so we had our bathing suits and things in our carry-on bags. We hit the pool and waited for our room – once a storm came in around 1pm we headed back to the lounge to wait further. At 2pm we still had no room and DD3 was desperately needing a nap – we inquired just to be certain – said it would be another 30 minutes or so – miraculously we got a text 2 minutes later with our room number – so we went right on up.

THE ROOM
Let me start with saying that I requested Marina view and open balcony. So I was hoping to get one of those requests. Let’s start with the cons just to get it over with…
CONS: We didn’t get either request – we were on the 3rd floor with a dormer balcony and looking over the pool. DD3 was unable for the 8 nights to view anything from our balcony without being picked up or sitting on the tall chairs (that she couldn’t climb into or out of). Pool noise was tough during naptime as she constantly wanted to join “her friends”. We were disappointed with the lack of drawer space – there were 8 drawers under the TV which sounds like a lot but the were tiny! I had to fold my shirts half long ways in order to get them in there! We had to utilize the 2 drawers in the bedstand for clothes as well as the top of the safe in the closet!

PROS: We did enjoy the décor – it was very much in a style that we enjoy. :thumbsup2 We had excellent Mousekeepers who did fun things with DD’s toys and books – left us towel animals frequently and lots of chococlates! We did receive the evening turn-down cards which we thought was a nice tough. The room did feel bigger with the high ceilings and we really liked having a ceiling fan up there. We found the room spacey for us and really felt at home in it. It was far enough from the lounge that we didn’t hear the noise and close enough that we could get there very quickly!

THE POOLS
PROS: EVERYTHING! WE LOVED THEM! No complaints! DD3 played and swam and jumped to her hearts content! She loved everything about all of them! We rented a half-day cabana and had an amazing experience with that! :woohoo:

THE LOUNGE
PROS: So many different choices of offerings throughout the day! We had evening apps most of the nights, dessert a few times, breakfast most mornings and afternoon snacks and tea most days – we really enjoyed all of the food and drink choices! We liked the ease of getting disposable cups to use at the pool and for DD3 to use. The coffee was always fresh and delicious! I truly loved all of the pastries and breads that they had out – so good!!! :cheer2:

CONS: Silly thing but I wish that they would’ve left juice out after the evening apps – sometimes DD3 really wanted a little juice (and so did I!) but there was only milk or water as an option – probably a lot healthier but still… would’ve liked juice at night too! I didn’t like the concierge desk in the middle of the lounge – felt uncomfortable when people were checking in or getting help – we could hear most things going on and even could see the computer screen if we wanted to – would like that to be more private. It did get crowded in their on some days – I know that there were many guests granted access to the lounge that weren’t staying in SL due to the RPC refurb. so that may have contributed to the congestion at times – we were always able to find a seat but DD wasn’t always able to sit in the kids area which upset her when that happened. We explained that “it is what it is” to her but she didn’t quite understand that.

FOOD AROUND THE RESORT:
PROS: EVERYTHING! We ate at the Beach Bar, Narccoossee’s, 1900 Park Fare and Grand Floridian Café – Loved everything at every meal! Narccoosse’s was our “date night” while DD went to the new Club Disney at Poly – we were very happy with our time there! We visited GF Café twice and really enjoyed the Cobb salad, the shrimp and grits and the grand burger! They were great and even got DD chicken nuggets even though they weren’t on the menu! 1900 Park Fare breakfast offered different options and all was yummy! Great character interaction!

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
We rank GF SL second place to the Poly CL – mainly for the lounge experience – we do love watching Wishes from the lounge and we love the arrangement of the lounge at Poly better. But we really enjoyed our first stay at the GF SL! We were quite sad to leave! But we are doing a split stay at YC and GF (GV) in the fall so we don’t have to wait long to be back!

Any questions – please let me know!

I just booked CL SF and loved reading Ferrentinos review. Thanks!!! My DD will be just shy of three when we arrive so it was good to hear about her experience too. Its going to be her third trip to WDW.

Quick question - does anyone know where I can find the list of daily pool activities that they usually give you at check-in? I tried searching all over the place and can find it for many other resorts but not GF.:confused3

I emailed the IPO and they sent it to me.

I thought your review was pretty accurate compared to my visits.

I will remind people to ASK. I have asked for milk when not out. I also have asked for cereal at night too. If they have access to usual CL food /drinks they will be happy to oblige.

Glad you had a good trip.:goodvibes

You guys are making me wish I had booked club level. The convenience of lounge access sounds wonderful! Sadly, it wasn't avail for our dates with the discount. I am going to keep checking, though, in case it opens up.

:beach:

Thanks

No, this is not true. Initially Poly guests were told they could use GF pool (I was booked at Poly) then they changed and said no, Poly isn't allowed to use GF pool. Instead, they are being given a 1 day ticket to BB water park.
I changed my res to GF :goodvibes

Ferrentinos, thanks for your thoughtful and detailed SL review! :thumbsup2 I agree with you re: the placement of the desk in the lounge! There is no privacy for conducting whatever business you have.
But lucky you to be going back to the GF so soon!! :)

As Sue M posted, Poly guests are not allowed to use the GF pools. As she mentioned, Poly guests were originally given access to the GF pools, but that has been changed to a 1 day water park ticket.

Are there laundry facilities in the Villas for those staying in a Studio?

Here is a link from the first page of this thread with VGF information. Looks like laundry facilities are located on the 4th floor near the elevators:

Scroll down past the pics and you will see information about each room category.

Do keep checking as availability does sometimes change. I will say, though, that the GF is an amazing resort even without CL, so you will have a great time regardless :goodvibes.

:)Hi. Does anyone know when the RPC refurb will be completed? I am booked in SL for 8/17-8/23 and I keep checking to see if I can upgrade but NO rooms are showing up in RPC. I am thinking this is due to the refurb....
Anyone have details? Thanks!!! :thumbsup2
