2014 DL Avengers Half Marathon Weekend 11/14-11/16!!!

The Christmas decorations will already be up in mid-November? I have never been for the holidays so just wanted to double-check this.

They usually are up by mid November. They start putting them up in late October (snow on the castle) I know Thanksgiving is a little later than normal this year. You might want to pop in on the Disneyland at Christmas time thread. They might have the official Holiday dates posted over there. I'm guessing they will all be up even if the holiday entertainment hasn't started yet.

Heres a c&p from the Holiday superthread:

Q: When does the holiday season begin and end at the Disneyland Resort?
A: Typically, the season will "officially" begin within a day or two after Veterans Day - so around early/mid-November. The season sometimes begins on Fridays and sometimes on Mondays. Many things in the parks (such as It's a Small World Holiday) will open a few days before the official season start date, but not everything. The 3 hotels will not be decorated until right around Thanksgiving.

The season will generally end on the first Sunday after New Year's Day. If New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the last day of the season will likely be one week from that day. Decorations and overlays begin to come down even before the season ends. Of course, there can be adjustments and alterations in the schedule depending on which dates fall on which days of the week.

This year, the holiday season will begin on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, and extend through Monday, January 6, 2014.

WOw this really sounds amazing.. I never even knew they did this! Geez.. where have I been living in the clouds?? :cloud9::cloud9:

Anyways, I'd love to participate in these though maybe start out with just the 5k's since I've done those before.. but it is expected to run the races? I'm a very beginner runner and due to cancer treatment that just ended even that was put on hold for a while so have been pretty much out of the game and just starting from scratch again. My main concern is if I wanted to particpate in the "5k race" would I look goofy :goofy: walking it rather than running?

Thanks everyone!!

You should totally do the 5K at least! Its mostly in the Parks (usually) so I dont think they worry about the 16 min mile time limit like they do with the longer races. There will be tons of people just walking it. And if you wanted to start training for the half, there are lots of people who run/walk the entire thing. Myself included! But for that one definitely train to do a 15 min mile pace the whole time so you dont get swept.

ARGH!!! My DW and I have been planning a trip out there that weekend (thinking it wouldn't be that crowded).

Why that weekend?!

:)

I hear you! I'm bummed too and we were planning for that Monday the 17th through Wednesday in the parks. I'm afraid there will be to much crowds from the race spilling into the week :( May have to move to the first week of December.

Can anyone tell us what its like the week after a race!?

AAAH! I just read about this on FB and came here to see about details. My girls currently LOVE Marvel, and DD15 is into running. DD12 will be out for track this year too. 5K is doable for the girls.

Does anybody have any idea how much Marvel stuff there would be for you to see/do? Sounds like several Marvel characters will be at the 1/2 maarathon but only Hulk would be cheering on the 5K, so would there be any chance to see the others if you're not doing the half marathon?

It would be totally impractical to do this- we're going to WDW in June AND this is during school and harvest- so it will probably not happen, but just once it would be so fun to fly out for a quick impulsive trip.

I'm sure there will be some runners who hang out a few days after the race but I believe the majority will head home on Monday and Tuesday. Personally, we'll be in the park Monday morning for breakfast but we head home after that.

I think you'll definitely see more Marvel characters at the 5K than just Hulk. I think Hulk will be like the mascot of the race. I'm guessing he'll be featured on the medallion you get and possibly the shirt too. But you should definitely see more Marvel characters on the 5K course than just Hulk.

Perhaps others can chime in here with their opinions as well.

I say go for it :) We're going to be in DL in June for our vacation and theres no way I'd miss this even if it is just a few months later! I'll be taking DD out of school for 2 days so she can participate. I think its a good experience for her. Teaches her that being healthy and active is fun and its just part of our lifestyle!

I'm excited to see another DLR event for runDisney, but I'm kind of meh about the theme. I know tons of people who are stoked for it though, so I'm still excited. I just can't decide right now if I'll be running. The good news is, it saves me from wanting to go for legacy for another west coast event. But I think I'd still like to run the inaugural year.

Decisions, decisions!

On the other hand I've wanted to work the runDisney events before, so maybe this time I will be able to.

I will decide before registration opens up.

I walked the Tink Neverland 5k with my mom and sister last month. My mom has some health issues so her fast walk was more a saunter for most folk. I kid you not, I have a photo of the Finish Line and the clock next to it reads 1:28:53, so it took us 90 minutes to complete the 3.1 miles. And there were plenty of folks behind us.

I know RunDisney doesn't encourage this slow of a pace, but they certainly weren't herding us or rushing us out of the park. They were extremely gracious knowing that not everyone is physically capable of hitting the recommended 16 minute pace. Mom got a lot of shout outs too; she was dressed as a chimney sweep and lots of folks started singing Step In Time when we passed them by. She was tickled. :lovestruc

I have to admit, even though I said 13.1 was not my distance, the idea of running an Inaugural Event and possibly obtaining Legacy status has me considering registering, even if I don't love the theme.

I texted my DH yesterday when the announcement broke. He didn't respond. So last night I brought it up and asked why he didn't answer. He said he didn't know what I wanted him to say. I guess that means he's conflicted about me registering (he is very much not interested in running a half-marathon).

I'll be honest, I'm not a giant Avengers/super heroes fan but now that I have a son I'm getting more exposure to it. But I do think it will be a super fun theme. Tons of costume options! And like you I'm mainly just excited to have another west coast Disney race! The date move for Tink didn't work out for me and we cant go to Disney on labor day weekend. So this is now my official race. I'm super excited to get to run an inaugural half!

Keep us posted on what you decide to do!

DH and I did the PHM in 2010 with another couple, and I was satisfied with not doing another one ever again, though it was a great time! :goodvibes

Then, the daughter of those friends signed her mom up for this year's PHM and told me to do it with my daughter. So, we just returned from our trip to WDW. It was a great long weekend with the girls and, even though we all finished, 3 of us had not trained as well as we should have. My daughter came in about an hour or sooner than the rest of us!:cool1:

My daughter just texted me yesterday about this Avenger's race because she had so much fun! I have to admit that I would love to get the CtC medal!! This WILL be my last chance to do that!

I'm afraid it will be so popular that we won't have a chance to register. Coming from the east coast, we will have to make it a longer trip and I hope I can get some decent prices on a hotel...I guess the park tickets just went up :sad2:

I'm sort of glad we still have a month to think about it before they open up registration. It's going to be more money than I wanted to spend this year..:rolleyes1

Park tickets at DL didn't go up yet so you're in luck there! Im sure they will soon so keep an eye on them. And I think as long as you register in the morning when registration opens that you should be fine. I wouldn't put it off until lunch time or anything like that though.

W/ registration, it opens at 9am PST/12pm EST so just make sure you're on the site as soon as it opens and you should be fine. Fingers crossed.

For park tix, Get Travel does discounted park tix for the races. You just order beforehand and pick them up at the expo. It's really easy and you'll save money.

If you start looking now for hotels, you should fine some really good prices, especially if you have an AAA card. I booked my room at the Best Western Stovall's for that weekend and got 2 double beds for $87 a night.

Thanks! :goodvibes I'm hoping to look into the planning (just in case ) this weekend.

Cool! Thanks for the great tips! :thumbsup2 Discounted tickets would be great, especially because the PHM didn't offer any discounts on tickets or rooms like they did in 2010. I have to admit, that was part of the fun :)

i am considering this, since its all new for me and i just learned about it a few days ago and started reading about it today. I am still going with pros and cons of going this weekend.
any one know what course the 5 k would be following? Any one know about family who want to be at the finish line?

Yay!!!! Me and my dad are going to run the 5k. It will be my first 5k. A

No clue on the courses yet. They have 2 different ones for both the DL in Sept and the Tink in Jan/May. DL starts at the underpass of DTD, but until last year, it had started at the tram pick-up for Mickey and Friends. It also used to end in DCA, but changed last year as well, to over by the finish of the 1/2 (backside of DTD by ESPN). Tink; however, starts right at the castle and ends in DCA; it's entirely in the parks. The downside to the 5k's, at least w/ the DL races, the course hasn't started to come out until we see it in the program a little less than a month before the race. That being said, you'll be running in both parks and backstage at the very least. There are floats and characters along the courses for pics, and they are an absolute blast to do. So much fun! :goodvibes And families are able to be at/near the finish line.

Congrats on your 1st 5k! You'll have a ton of fun and good luck w/ training.
