2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

Wow Bernard, you were busy!

Nice try Ohmari

Not a lot going on here, had OT at work last week.

Well I am hopping on the destash train.

We have a huge garage to clean out. Its a work in progress. We had a garage sale this week and after that we threw out 9 bags and people were taking them from the street.

Now hopefully today or by sat. at the latest we are taking 15 boxes to goodwill.
That was the good or better stuff that did not sell at the garage sale. It was not worth our time, so no more sales, its just getting donated.

I think I will aim for 1 or 2 bags or boxes a day to sort through.

LOL anger makes you want to purge! I tripped over that stupid class night box a million times and said enough is enough!

Now to find more motivation.

That's my motto, too. Either it's worth more then $20, and then I sell it on eBay, or it goes into donation pile. When we come back from Siberia, I will start another round of clothing purge.

My dd came home this weekend and she took an exercise roller and all the Play Station 2 video games. She said her bf turns them in for cash at some video store. He is saving up for Play Station 4.

I have a stack of record albums, that I was going to put in storage or just toss, but my dh had a fit and the albums went back in his closet on the shelf. For the record, we don't even own a record player.

If you want to deal with it, try ebay.

I've tried the yard/garage sale route before too and it's not worth the time.
Right now I'm giving stuff to our kids school for their annual rummage sale.

They make good money and I get rid of stuff, it's a win win.

Checking in... sounds like everyone is making great progress this year!

I pretty much went through every nook and cranny in this house in the month of January, all but our finished basement. In mid February we booked a trip to Disney for May and de-cluttering the basement took a back seat for a while. I did work in the basement a little before we left because the week that we got back our contractor started in our basement. We added 2 closets. One is huge, approx 18 feet wide by 3 feet deep. The other one is basically just a coat closet (our house is old and we have no closets or no storage except in the bedrooms) but I put a bunch of other seasonal stuff in there and gift wrap, my organized gift bags, tissue paper, etc. Oh and a ton of old prom & bridesmaid dresses and my wedding dress that I need to do something with... the huge closet stores everything else that needed storing! Holiday decorations, all the baby stuff that my son no longer needs. The one side we had the contractor build in some shelves so I have a makeshift pantry that I LOVE!
It's been about 6 months and I feel like all of our drawers and cabinets could use another de-stash already!

I started working in the basement again yesterday. Our washing machine isn't working and we have someone coming to look at it tomorrow. Am I the only one that hates complete strangers seeing my messy basement? LOL. Now that we have the closets that takes care of most of the mess, but I have a corner that has all the boxes and shelves of stuff that I need to sell, donate or otherwise find other homes for. I organized all that today and it looks so much better. Now I just need to get on getting rid of the stuff... I took pictures of the big things and I'm in the process of listing those on CL. I have stuff listed on ebay but the sales have been slow for me right now but I've gotten rid of about one thing a week at least. We got new cookware today so I'm cleaning and boxing up our old cookware to donate. I also have a bag of stuff in the pantry that I need to donate somewhere. My goal is to have the entire basement (and rest of the house for that matter) completely done done done by the end of the year. We're putting our house on the market next year so I want everything to be done so we can enjoy it! In the past 2 months we've replaced our kitchen floor and done a lot of painting, still have a few things to paint and pretty up this summer but we've come a long way this year already!

Oh and does anyone know of any sites to check the value of collectables? I have a class of (year that I graduated high school) barbie in the box but the box is a little beat up, that I wanted to sell but I have no idea if it's worth anything. I was going to try to sell it on CL, they are only going for about $5-$10 on ebay.

It sounds like our house. We are building and we want to get our house on the market soon. We own 2 extra lots with our house. We made the mistake of putting the garage on the other lot, not thinking we could sell off that lot for someone to build on. Our land and garage is going to be the selling point hopefully. My house just makes me shake my head. There is a project in each room, but we are getting there.

Yay. Got rid of a large rocking horse toy that has been taking up space for way too long. Every time I sell something on a swap site it encourages me to get rid of more stuff! ::woohoo:: hopefully I will be able to get through a few piles this afternoon.

I'm in the middle of it, I only started last month and already have enough to do the car boot to end all car boot sales. Everything is being stashed in my daughter's old room and I'm loving the space I'm beginning to create, still having problems getting the courage up to sort out my craft room

Well sat. my dh and one of the ds loaded up the van with the left over garage sale stuff and went to Goodwill.

Even the Goodwill lady was surprised by how much stuff we donated they said.

I am taking a little time off because I am teaching vbs at my church this week and we are getting a new roof this week too and my dh is leaving on a 2 week business trip, so starting saturday I will get back to work.

I think I might work on some of the clothes in my closet because its nice and air conditioned in the house for sorting and decluttering etc.

Due to a massive thunderstorm, we have a new TV

So, I decided to take a look at our other electronics.

I found we had 2 DVD Players plugged into 1 TV. 1 DVD/Radio destashed AND lots of dust :scared1:

I have a terrible habit of keeping cables, half a dozen HDMI, a gazillion AV cables on top of far too many adaptors, plugs and leads, all going to the car boot, people will surely pay a quid or two for them.

That stinks, did insurance cover it?

OhMari, we havnt claimed it. Not sure if we will. It was an old one and due to this and that we only got a 24 inch, so JUST over $200., not sure if it is worth it or not.

Your and others opinions on claiming it?

Seems like when we have claimed things on car insurance we made out worse than if we had just sucked it up...

It depends what your deductible is and percentage of replacement cost. If your tv got hit, did you look around your house to see if other sockets got hit?

For a $200 tv I would not in fact one time we had a new cheap tv get hit that did not get claimed. Friends had one that was about $700 and they felt that they would be hurt by claiming it.

My parents did claim one years ago but they had some other damage as well.

We did check other sockets and no, nothing else got hit as it came in through the cable.

A little odd but will take it if that is it. Some people in our neighborhood lost multiple TV's and computers. We feel as though we got lucky :littleangel:

Are you my husband?!?! He has boxes and boxes of cables, plugs, connectors etc. I want to toss all of it!!! :rotfl2:
