2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

Glad to see others are plugging away this weekend.
With DH at work I can destash more...
Only a few things but they free up space...

Several travel brochures and books and 2 food storage containers are G O N E

Also, some "school" folders and more smellys that DH brought home.

Tomorrow is another day...

Folks! Not to be a Scrooge McDuck, but have some yardsales before you dontate. It doesnt have to be an 'all that' sale, but just sell your stuff. Cash spends at Disney, tax deductions (if you get them..) do not.

That's OK. I detest holding yard sales, so no thanks. It is worth it to me NOT to do them, but I don't hold it against anyone who does.

I can spend a bigger tax refund at Disney, so that works for me. :thumbsup2

The items I didn't get time to destash yesterday I managed to today :thumbsup2

Have you been able to destash today?

Watched Hoarders Buried Alive this morning.

Out went a bunch of magazines! :thumbsup2

We moved last year and got rid of a lot then. But, we have too many kids clothes, toys, etc. I have sold a decent amount recently and made about $100 so far just within the past month. I also donated a garbage bag full of clothes, plus three smaller bags--people are picky with what they want to buy, so sometimes I donate just to get it out of the house.

Our attics are just about empty, our garage is sooo organized and clean. Kid clothes are almost under control. Finished basement is looking good. I can't explain it--I just don't want stuff we aren't using anymore around.

The biggest change I've made is to stop buying stuff. This month, I'm trying to buy nothing that doesn't get used up. I bought 3 items so far that I wasn't planning on--2 pairs of pjs and a tiny stuffie for Christmas, but I've destashed over 100 items, so it's still good.

Wow, QVCshopper, sounds like you have done a super job.
Sounds like you feel you aren't quite done yet...keep up the good work!

Thanks! I'm not sure if I'll ever feel done. A family of five means a lot of stuff, especially kid stuff. I'm just trying to find a simpler lifestyle I guess.

We bought my in-law's house, and they left a lot here while their new house was being built. They have since taken most of it back, but some they just don't want anymore--so I'm still dealing with that. Like my hubby's almost 40 year old baby clothes and old rocking chair. Stuff that doesn't mean much to me, but it does to my in-laws.

Our in-laws were sabotaging our basement cleaning. My father in law was actually pulling things out of the garbage bag and making a pile. He thought he would save things, just in case we changed our mind. I had to show him how water soaked a pair of leather moccasin slippers were. Baseball gloves, bats, balls-soaked. We haven't played baseball in 15 years-:sad2:

QVCshopper, if 40 year old stuff means that much to them, tell them they need to store it. I know, I know, easier said then done. Maybe you can swing it a little differently, I don't do so well with it...
Does it mean anything to hubby? I finally told my Mom that it was never going to fit again, my kids were too big for them and highly doubted her greatgrandchildren would wear them.
Maybe try taking pictures but destash the stuff.

good luck!!

I pulled out my summer stuff, and as I was going through it to put it away, I decided that there were several items I just don't wear enough to justify keeping. That spurred me to look at the winter things before packing them away, and I pulled out about 6 pair of pants that I just don't wear often, either. So those went in the donate bin, too. I got 1 full trash bag full just in time for the next charity pickup this week. Since the the old TV died, there is no need to keep the old TV cabinet. Hoping to have hubby haul that out to the front over the weekend so maybe someone will pick it up before trash day on Monday - it still has some life in it. It doesn't seem like I've made much progress when I look around the house, but I KNOW I've gotten a ton of stuff out of here!

Thanks everyone! I'll keep going... I've been just throwing some stuff out that my in-laws left like a decrepit paper mache Santa that they didn't even know they had anymore. They did leave some great stuff, like a couch, HDTV, outside furniture, too. It's been an interesting challenge trying to mix our stuff with theirs.

Yes it is tough. For years we had a bunch of stuff my parents were coming after. Little by little we got rid of most of it. DH still has an old heavy engine in the basement that my father still asks about but that is about the only thing he would miss.

So far this week DD cleaned out the fridge while DH and I were in Disneyland and I shreded a garbage bag full of papers. I need to crack down and get ready for our yard sale.

I am not finding anything I am willing to part with this weekend

Are you doing better destashing today than I am? :coffee:

I need to get back to destashing and I might need to give up the idea of a yard sale since I have no idea when DH would be able to secure a weekend off to help deal with it. But we could also really use the money from the stuff too. So I'm frozen with indecision and have a huge heap by the front door area that looks terrible.

Today I'm going to see about reclearing the space by my side of the bed. It is the dumping ground and is full of stuff that really has no other home plus a few things that actually belong on the walls. I think that is a good project for today.

Delmar, sounds like a great project for the day.
I am trying to get outside to enjoy the low humidity, just not a lot of get up and go LOL

Nearly destashed 2 belts that I have never worn (they came with dress slacks) but I may be needing to dress up more for my job thus just cant do it. As soon as I get rid of them I feel I will have to go buy new ones...

Story of my life...,I get rid of things right before I find out I need them. LOL

Belts don't take up any space so just hang them on a hanger and leave them in the front of the closet so you are reminded rouse them if you do need them.

We all have days or even weeks like that. Part of my problem is I have a few large pieces that need to go but I have no place to put them until the day of the sale.

I did not do anything today because my DS graduated from college. So he is back in the basement with a bunch of stuff.:rotfl2:

Ugg, Everyone of my kids moved back home after college (for a short period of time). Each one lived in apartments, and they all thought their things should of been part of my house. I am so glad I put my foot down, especially when everyone thought it would be a great idea to bring the big brown (Love Sac) in.

My sisters youngest came home from college, he was only a freshman-but her house looks like it exploded. :rotfl: Luckily she has a big dining room and all of my nephews belongs has circled her dining room table. Her wash machine has not stopped since Friday night. I remember those days, 3 weeks worth of laundry, because laundry wasn't on their to do list.

I am the QUEEN of setting random goals. I decided last week I wanted 500.00. Why I picked this amount I don't know.

In 10 days I did 483!

Had garage sale of honest JUNK - netted 100
Found 2 cookie sheets with tags still on never used - returned to Kohls for 60 and sold the gift card on line.

Returned an electric mini pie maker I got as gift to BBB for 105! Sold gift card for 84 online.

Put a few junky things on auction - have 76 and 5 days left

Returned unopened cosmetics I decided I didn't need.

And instead of taking Verizons trade in of 80 on my old iphone, I sold it for 160 on Craigs list so I count this as 80 as that is above and beyond...

And a few AMAZON buy back on books...

I have NOTHING left in this house to sell. I have ZERO clutter!! And it is wonderful. Everytime I find a small box of stuff to sell I act immediately on it so it never builds up. Soon as school is over, I will sell DDs texbooks on line and her old backpack and lunch bag. Always a market...
