2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

My daughter' school is having a Goodwill drive - the 5th grade class is collecting stuff for Goodwill. Goodwill will pay the class a finders fee. We got rid of three boxes of stuff, Goodwill gets donations, and the 5th grade class gets to fund raise!

Daughter came home today and we went to the storage shed and picked up 3 of her totes. She through out almost everything. She probably has a quarter of a tote full. She recycled all her college text books and papers and papers from high school and grade school. She said she hasn't looked at those things in 8 years and recycled it all. Ya!

Yay! :cool1: I need to do that, as it has been many more than 8 years for me…:p

I did drop off the toys for the rummage sale today. The coordinator was very glad to get them. Plus, DD 10 is now inspired, and she has gone through the toys and costumes in the basement. I probably have another car load. I just keep reminding her that she needs to store them off the floor tonight, as they are calling for thunderstorms, and our basement does tend to flood. :worried:

Yesterday, I cleaned one shelf in my closet that had pictures and photograph books, two shelves in my dh closet. He had 6 die cast 2002 Chevrolet Corvette cars, in their boxes. He told me they are worth a lot of money. I told him to sell one and show me the money.:rotfl:

I found another bag of Beany Babies and I do have the Princess Diana one. So is it a hoax? Or is it worth something.

We took the bins my dd emptied and we filled them back up and took them to the storage unit. I cannot believe how much stuff we have. We have a 4 car detached garage and the rafters are full. 2 sheds outside and they are full of stuff. It feels good decluttering. I tried to tell my husband if we haven't seen or used half of the items we have stored away again, why are we saving it.

Last Sunday we got 4 inches of rain and we ended up getting 3 ft of water in our basement.

We got our furnance running, but the repairman said it will probably last another month.
Our gas water heater is gone, but my husband was able to change out all the parts that were effected, because it broke down in the warranty year and the manufacturer sent us double parts of everything.

We lost our de-humidifier, a shredder I put in the basement, because I didn't want to look at it during Easter when everyone was coming over. We had to throw a lot away, because the moisture from the 3 feet over water, just saturated everything and it smelt like mold. 20 bags of garbage. My husband made me go through every box and tote.

It was sad loosing so much, but I finally destashed 20 years worth of paper.

We put an antique rocking chair out on our curb and someone picked it up. It was missing a spindle on each side of the arms. It had a leather inlay, but some rivets rusted.

SO sorry about all of this! What a mess.

Does "destashing" the yard count? I think there are 6-8 bags of trash & yard waste waiting for trash day. Tossed an old pool that I thought DH had done 2 years ago, tried to get our old non-working riding mower out front for a scrapper, but DH couldn't do it without help or getting hurt lol.
Anywho, hope everyone is having a good weekend!

I definitely think it counts because I pulled a bunch of pots and planters out from behind the shed a few weeks ago and they will go to the dump on the next trip!

Well, it seems like so many of you are doing really well with the destash! I have been cleaning and organizing, but the "get rid of " pile isn't terribly large. Mostly just reorganizing. But DS's robotics team is having a group yard sale in June (that I am chairing) and so I have some motivation to start some more cleaning out.

I made some "un-progress" this weekend by bringing home two large bags from my Mom's church rummage sale. Some of it was clothing for my men that they didn't like or it didn't fit, so it should go directly into the yard sale pile. Some of it was stuff for DD's summer apartment, so that is boxed together for now. And some of it was for a future craft project, so I've set that aside, but I need to give myself a "use by" date on that pile!

I definitely see some progress ahead though, with the yard sale looming. FB yard sale has been slow lately and it is time to repost some of my items. And my Disney online yard sale is SO CLOGGED with Frozen items that no one can see anything else!

Onward ho!!!!!..............P

Destashed a bit but most of it went to the car trailer in the yard. It's full of stuff for the rummage sale at school/church. I need to remember to ask Father when the church plans on getting the storage unit so I can get all this stuff off the property!

I've also started rearranging and destashing my craft room. My problem right now is justifying getting rid of stuff. I am like, oh I will use that in the future. But then I'm like when? I've had it for 6 months/a year/2 years and still haven't used it.
My biggest issue right now is trying to decide what to keep for the kids school albums. I'd really like to go digital with Disney trips and year in review albums but the kids want traditional for their school and sports albums. Really they want everything traditional, but frankly we just don't have the room for that. I'd even like to take the Disney albums I've already scrapped and scan them so the kids can each have one. 4 digital books would take up less room than 1 traditional, especially considering each Disney trip is 2 albums!

On the up side, the RV is at the campground and out of my yard!

The second car load of stuff for the rummage sale made it to church today. I cleared out around the organ, and DH and I will move it to the bottom of the basement stairs sometime soon. The rummage sale is next weekend, so that should be gone soon!

One of the elementary schools is organizing a flea market, so I was able to take 3 bags of clothes over this morning. I'm still going through more clothes and will sort, wash and fold them into bags for tomorrow morning.

Now I know to store these things until the flea market every year. It benefits the school.

I have finals next week, but I'm taking a small break to make sure I get this done before Saturday(flea market).

Our house is lighter!

WOOHOO for the clean out and getting the RV out of the way!

I hear you on cleaning out the crafts/scrapping stuff.... but honestly I could probably pull out a box full of scrapping supplies that is AT LEAST 6 years old and I'll probably NEVER use it!! :crazy2:

Love a good rummage sale.... both for the DESTASH and for a bargain!

WOOHOO for lightening the load!

DS's robotics team yard sale is going to be a HUGE motivator for me this month! I've already started a corner in the basement to start filling with stuff to sell! And while I would love to sell it and make the $ myself, at least I know that every penny the team makes on this is less cash I have to pony up next year or fewer fundraisers I have to worry about! No time to destash today, however, as I am working all day and then talking to the robotics parents tonight about the sale! Keep up the good work everyone!............P

I know, not a lot but 2 shirts have been destashed from here. :thumbsup2 My "Maine" clothing I am still finding. Tops I thought would be OK down here in the winter are still too warm. Havnt worn them in 2 winters, so out they go.

Also in the bag are a pair of shoes I bought for cruising but they HURT my feet so bad. I tried wearing them to a training class the other day thinking I wouldn't be walking much and would be ok :upsidedow
Nope, had to ask for bandaids at the first break, so out they go.

Have a few other things in mind to destash but DH is off for the next few days so will have to wait. He says "you keep getting rid of stuff, we wont have anything left" :confused3

Good work and good luck to you all for a successful destashing weekend coming up. :grouphug:

Well, got the "thumbs up" from DS's robotics team to go ahead with the yard sale fundraiser, so looks like my declutter motivation just jumped to high gear! Anyone want to drive their clutter to NH to donate to our cause???:lmao: How about just some prayers for nice weather on June 7th??
Hope everyone is doing well. I see a decent weather weekend on the horizon, so hopefully this will FINALLY be a spring garage clean-out weekend! I'm almost excited for it..... almost.:rotfl:.................P

I managed to get thru a small corner of the basement & was able to separate a bunch of toy pieces to sets they belong to and declutter 3 bags of pieces, junk, dust, flotsam & jetsam. I put aside a bunch of stuff for a gargantua sale, also weekend of June 7, but not in NH.
I have a train table with train set and 2 drawers that slide under for garage sale. I would think that would sell. I have a bunch of like new shoes and king size duvet, bed skirt and sham.......not sure if those would sell at a garage sale, or if I should just donate? Ah, dilemmas.

Tomorrow I am hoping to get a freezer inventory done and a re-arrange, because everything has shifted and is starting to landslide, KWIM? Not too mention, I have no idea what is in the back and one of the shelves needs to be re-attached. since DH is home another day, i am hoping to get a little further in the basement.

Later next week, we need to put stuff at curb for weekly town wide garbage pickup. Every little bit helps, right? Even if it looks worse for a bit? Please say yes!?!

I love putting sets, games, etc., back together. DD reassembled about 10 of those simple wooden puzzles, and I was thrilled! :thumbsup2

You have your eyes on the prize, so it's all good. :thumbsup2

Yes-It's the little things that add up over time to make a big difference. Maintaining a house can be overwhelming if you try to get things done all at once.

Yahoo! Hooray and a big thank you to the men from church who maneuvered the organ up the basement stairs and out of the house and to church for the rummage sale!

:worship::worship::cool1::cool1::cool1:

Of course, moving stuff around in the basement to create a path for DH and I to move the organ to the bottom of the stairs meant that DH couldn't find his workbench under all of the junk. Tackling that area is next, and while the rummage sale will be over, the thrift store around the corner takes donations 6 days a week.

Checking in, DH and I have been working so hard. Closet is clean and reorganized, and 3 bags went to Goodwill. Went through my DD closets and sold 2 boxes of clothes on ebay, money goes toward her summer clothes. Yesterday DD and I spent 2 hrs cleaning the "craft cabinet", now we can open the door without worrying about what will come flying out at us. Donated extra craft items to school art room! 30 days until kids are out for summer vacation and lots of destashing to do until then.

I'm finally on a roll. I'm donating 5 more bags to Goodwill tomorrow. I'm throwing out some broken, stained and stuff we just don't need or want. I'm trying to go minimalist.

A big THANK YOU for keeping me motivated!!!

I pulled out my son's summer stuff and realized that with all the hand-me-downs from his big brother, the clothes we've purchased for him, and the stuff from others, I had enough for at least 2 little boys, so I packed up half of it for a friend with a kid the same age who's been recently divorced and really struggling financially - even if she doesn't need to get her son quite as much, it might help. TBH, my son always picks the same shirts to wear over and over, anyway! Then I found that there were several things that are just too small for either of the boys, so those went in a bag for the charity pickup next week. Got 5 bags filled and ready to go by the end of the week. Woohoo!

This weekend is the annual town garbage pickup. So far I have decluttered 2 broken toys, 1 broom I broke sweeping out the garage, a Little Tykes basketball hoop & 2 climbing gyms, a plastic tricycle ride on, 3 old rugs, a BBQ grill, a few decorations, all big pieces. All except the 2 broken toys are on their way to new homes! I need to keep pitching stuff today. We also got the landscape mostly cleaned out and put to the curb for pickup and about 25% of the mulch spread. 2 more trips today & I should have all of the mulch, then we can, hopefully, complete next week. This is the furthest ahead we've ever been!!! So excited to keep this rolling along.

My husband took 2 loads of (different metals) to the recyling center and received $37.

We turned around and it was our towns bulk garbage day. They will take anything today, but you have to pay. Another 2 truck loads and we came out even.
