2013 Destash- this is the year!

You guys inspired me to continue my destash efforts as well! Yesterday, I went through my bathroom cabinets and threw out an entire garbage bag full of old makeup, free samples, medicines, random pieces of blow drying implements, etc. I also went through the kids' bathroom and even though it is still a bit gross, I managed to throw out all of the baby grooming stuff, some old medicine, and icky bath toys. Lastly, I went through our front hall closet and threw out some mismatched gloves, outgrown hats, and out of style or just ugly scarves.

Today, I had to do about 1 billion loads of laundry so less time for destashing. I did manage to go through our kitchen closet and throw out an entire garbage bag full of old shopping bags.

I think I will tackle my closet and drawers next. I have managed to drop a few sizes since the beginning of the summer. Those clothes I planned to wear once I lost weight all of a sudden are still not appealing! So I have some large size clothes and way out-of-date clothes to send out to Goodwill.

I also need to do something about my office. I work at home so it is a dumping ground for all sorts of nonsense. Hopefully I can do that as I sit on conference calls.

Thanks for the inspiration! Keep up the good work, everyone!

DH & I spent a good portion of the day decluttering. And I have to admit, I'm very pleased with the progress he made. He turned on the TV, watched football and cleaned out his side of the closet and his dresser. He actually got rid of a lot more than I thought he would so I'm happy with what he accomplished.

He made four large black donate bags and three bags of garbage. I put together one large donate bag and one large bag of garbage from my dresser. We also got through the coat closet. I put together one bag of garbage and have 9 jackets to donate. And lastly, I went through my containers in the kitchen and got rid of the containers missing lids and lids missing containers and my DS's bathroom cabinet and drawers. I managed to get out 2 more garage bags of garbage.

I'm actually getting a bit disgusted at how much garbage/junk we have hidden in every corner of the house. I knew we had some clutter, but I just didn't realize how much we really had. :(

Goals Accomplished So Far in 2013:
Decluttering All of the Christmas Decorations/ Got everything down to 1 large tote
DH and My Closet and Dressers: 5 bag of trashs; 7 large bags of clothing donated
Coat Closet: Got rid of old jackets and consolidated hats/gloves/scarves
DS's Bathroom Drawers and Cabinet: 1 bag of garbage removed
Kitchen: Organized container cupboard: 1 bag of garbage removed

At the point now, where I'm kicking myself for starting this. I know it has to get worse before it gets better.

4 of 10 contractor give away bags:

Closet I still have to empty that will be combined with one above:

Stuff on top of island dressers and on the floor that I have to clear out:

The 2 closets we're combining will hold evening clothes, coats, dressy shoes, dressy purses, and my makeup table.

Awesome. Keep going. Please show us pics when you are done. :thumbsup2

Thanks to this thread and you all we had a great 2012 destash in our home. There is more to go for 2013.

2012 Destash accomplishments:
1. Cleaned out and organized spare room. Made this into a bedroom for our Nephew.
2. Both Hallway closets cleaned out.
3. Master bedroom closet cleaned out and organized.
4. Laundry room cleaned out and organized.

I know that I need to a game plan for 2013. Instead of randomly picking which room to declutter I decided on the following purge, organize, clean schedule:

January
-Christmas decorations and put away what we keep (thanks to Bernard and Miss Bianca for your tips from Destash 2012 thread)
-Old receipts.
-Over the counter meds in bathrooms and hallway closet.

February
-Family room.
-Repurge Laundry room.
Seems like the clutter bug keeps putting stuff in here. :rotfl2:

March
-Office/Craft Room.

April
-Kitchen
-Dining Room

May
-Garage

June
-Living Room.

Its a lofty goal. Not sure on how I'm going to do. But here's to the start of the 2013 Destash. Good luck to all of you!!! :lovestruc

This weekend I made some good headway on the kitchen. Hot rid of expired spices, trashed useless stuff, and got the back of the oven sparkling. I now have more counter space!

Been sitting here reading this and finally got motivated! Went in the bathroom and cleaned out the medicine cabinet and cleaned the drawers in the vanity. I'll try to do the linen closet in the bathroom tomorrow.

It sounds like everyone is off to a good start!!!

I went though the top of the dreaded hall closet - I was able to get rid of a few pairs of gloves, one of my jackets and put a couple of spring jackets were out away with the warm weather clothes. DH needs to go through his coats...he has about 14. They don't even all fit in the closet. He doesn't see a problem with this. Unfortunately, I have a problem not being able to put my clothes away.

The desk is next. I'll get so far and then it turns into a disaster zone again. It's like my kryptonite.

Keep up the good work everyone!

I go back to work tomorrow (I work in education). typically, every year I have so much I want to get done and I go back not having accomplished not much if any of it. THIS BREAK WAS DIFFERENT!!!!! Of corse, I didn't get everything done but I did so much. I sent oldest ds to Salvation Army twice. I know have 8 bags in my hallway to go.

I made a list of all the different areas I wanted to declutter. For example, in the master bedroom I wanted to clean the cabinet under the sink, the hope chest, sort through 2 bookcases, some wire shelves and my nightstand. In our hallway was the coat closet, our cabinets that run the length of the hall and another closet that is a pantry/luggage holder/wine area. I think I had close to 50 places. I think I got though 30 of them!

Even better, I made really good choices at holiday clearance....Target's 70% and 90% sales are always a weakness for me, I picked up a few small items for gifts (really thinking hard-it's not just a cheap gift, but would I get it if it wasn't discounted?) I also got some stocking stuffers that are worth alot more, for dirt cheap ($15 ear buds with microphone for $1.50. Most of what I got will leave the house soon (I had to make some baskets for a raffle) with my cleaned off hall counter, I even had a place for my items as I assembled the baskets. The other items I got were consumables (like plastic ware fr New Years Day and Eve events)

I tend to focus on " public rooms" for obvious reasons but am especially happy with our much less cluttered master bedroom.

Lots of books are gone, DVD's and videos, misc kitchen items and so much else. As we packed up ornaments I even set out 8 or 10 ornaments .

I will admit, I didn't even attempt my curio cabinet. Not ready for that.....maybe not even this year at all.

My goal is to keep going. I may post my list, with the spaces I've worked on so it helps me continue to move forward.

Swing set is gone. WooHoo.

Now to get rid of this huge thing! You would think some one would buy it for $75?

Yes, I think someone would buy it, especially this time of year when people want to get in shape! Way to go on getting rid of the swing set.

I went through the junk and office supply drawers again. They look much better and I tossed a bunch of dried up pens & pencil scraps. The junk drawer has my folder of to-do items - got some done yesterday - and a few odds & ends.

As of now, today's goal is to remove a few piles that need to be donated or put away elsewhere. Once done, the bedroom (other than DD18's room) and main levels are fully decluttered and organized! :cool1: Thanks to these threads, I have made lots of progress. I think this is the 3rd year of these threads that I've joined.

There are a few projects I need to complete, such as hanging pics, and I will work on those once the basement is done.

Thanks for getting me motivated!

Organizes DD's and DS's rooms today. Now I have to sort out their old clothes :) maybe that'll be tomorrow's project.

lol We have that exact set up in our basement. Bought it years ago for $50. Good luck

Going to work on my bedroom closet today. I'm in the mood to donate a lot of things.:goodvibes

Ok, I just read through all the pages and didn't see this about Christmas decorations. Help please! Can anyone point me to it? TIA SO MUCH!

Ahh....productive weekend. Christmas is officially put away, and all of the boxes that we left out in our bedroom are stored as well. I know you "can't organize clutter," but that particular clutter is sorted and stored.

I promised DH that I'd put away the clothes I still have in a suitcase from a business trip that's still out (from ... November .... :scared1:) and that I'd work on our bedroom.

Then the official decluttering begins -- starting on Saturday with the kitchen, and then moving through the "public" rooms, followed by the "dungeon" basement.

I'm excited. Peter Walsh liked one of my tips on his Facebook page.

Well here I am again. I joined last years thread but really didn't get around to doing any decluttering (I got lazy!). This year I have to get busy because we have decided to put our house on the market at the end of March! I have a long list of stuff I have to get done before then. Repairs have to be made but we can't do the repairs because of the clutter.

Yesterday I decluttered the kitchen pantry. I can't believe I let a ton of food expire. I do have a food hoarding problem. I keep an over stock of food due to my childhood experiences of doing without. I'm talking like only eating eggs for a week straight because we had no money to buy groceries and we had chickens in the back yard. I gotta learn to keep less stock in the pantry.

Tonight I am going to work on the linen closet. I cleaned under the sink on Sunday and took a big bag full of the grocey bags back to the store to be recycled. I need to remember to do that each week when I go to the store so it doesn't become a mess again. ;)

I've been reading and keeping up with the thread but have only been doing little bits here and there. We are just settling back in from our trip though and I just finished emptying the kitchen rubbermaid bin and putting those things into their home.

I have a few bigger projects to do:

sort through Christmas bins (what I have up here as I left several with DH in FL)
sort through the Halloween bins
sort through the Easter/Valentines bins

Reload all our CDs onto the computer (tip for the day: back your stuff up! ) :headache:

sort through YDD's clothes and get rid of the excess

sort through all the kids stuffies and only keep what they truly love and play with

I need to find a dresser for the boys really badly so I can have their bins back for toys. Plus I have a lot of work to do on the kids rooms again. We had an incident at the house that caused me to have to pack up a lot of stuff before we went away so there is a bunch of stuff in storage that I'm not going to bring back here. Just safer to keep it there. Which also means I can't really sort it right now as it's too cold. So the holiday bin sorting will have to wait until closer to springtime.

I also need to get rid of a couple pieces of furniture from the garage and work on packing up excess stuff since we are going to move in June.
