2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

Goal 72 #65 Always Watching by Chevy Stevens Dark Memories, hidden pasts, and a place that seems like heaven but might be hell. Makes for a great book! 5 stars

I didn't know Chevy Stevens had any other books out...... Still Missing is one of my favorite books so I'll have to check out Always Watching.

#45 - The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

This is an older book, so I'm sure most of you have read it. DS(15) is reading it for Honors Freshman English so I decided to read it too. Wow, what a life she had growing up... people are nuts.

Ronia the Robber's Daughter by Lindgren

My daughter came home from the library with this. I read it before had never heard of it. Very good life in the woods and quite as the tittle explains. Really enjoyed it.

BTW two of my books have Goodread Giveaways that end tomorrow. Everyday Goodreads has numerous authors and publishers giving away books, highly recommend entering some. I have yet to win but still trying.

I read Bad Monkey. Loved it as much as all of his other books: pure summer silliness to make me laugh!

Please tell me the Governor with the wonky eye and the shower cap is in this one:lmao:

I read The Cuckoo's Calling. I enjoyed the characters, but I didn't think it was a very mysterious mystery. I thought the killer was very obvious.

Anyways. :cool2:

Book Goal: 25

#4: The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien
I think that this is very commonly know, I won't go into details.

#5: The Toss of a Lemon by Padma Viswanathan
This is a little harder to explain and I certainly couldn't do it justice. There are many elements and twists that surround it.

#6: The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I liked it but at the same time I was disappointed, only becaused it ended. I want a sequel.

#7: It by Stephen King
It actually took me a really long time to get through this. Least to say I LOVED it. It was my first Stephen King novel and also my first horror novel. And it was kind of scary how much I liked it. The way King writes definitely gives you that childhood nostalgia.

So that's where I am! The next book on my list is another Stephen King novel to get more of a Halloween/Horror vibe. :hmghost:
I'm Contemplating between Salem's Lot and Pet Semetary. People are telling me not to read Pet Semetary so I'm not so sure yet.

#38 - Ripper by Michael Slade

a nerve-shattering thriller combining the legend of Jack the Ripper, the terrifying secrets of the Tarot, and a "mystery weekend" on a secluded Canadian island, whereurder becomes all too real.

I think I'll be adding this to my list too!

Goal: 100 books this year.

#78 down and done.

The Watsons and Emma Watson by Jane Austen and Joan Aiken. This is the fragment of Jane Austen's untitled final novel, published posthumously in 1871 by her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh. Joan Aiken picks up where Jane Austen left off, introduces a new hero, and brings the story to a satisfying end for all Austen fans.

Emma Watson, after 14 years among people whom she loves and respects, is returned to a home where petty jealousies rule the day. Her father is ill and weak, and her brothers are not men of fine minds. Emma endures all with the fortitude and spirit of a true Jane Austen heroine and longs for the day when the amiable and dashing Captain Fremantle will return to make everything right.

Aiken has Austen down pat, and it's a shame that she passed away before she could do more sequels and continuations. She did write Lady Catherine's Necklace (about Anne de Bourge from Pride and Prejudice) and Jane Fairfax (a sequel to Emma).

Queen Colleen

I was trying to get through Never Look Away - Linwood Barclay. I think I will end up finishing it because it really bugs me to leave a book unfinished, even when I'm not crazy about it. :confused3 Anyone read his stuff & can give an opinion? He has several that sound interesting.

I have read everything he's written and loved it all. I have to say that Never Look Away is probably my least favourite. It' snot his best. Stick with it, it's still a good book but, if you want to try another of his, I can highly recommend No Time For Goodbye :thumbsup2

#46 - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Loved this book - was a really fast read!!!

Is it to late to join? I might only be able to get 3-4 the rest of the year?

You could always tell us what you've read this year and recommend in addition to your future reading. :) I personally have gotten some good suggestions from the thread.

Goal 72

#67 NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things. When she rides her bike over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. And so much more to the story.

I loved this book!! 5 stars!

I finished Beautiful Ruins over the weekend. (Gotta love weekends at the lake) and started Abducted which I can't put down. I hope to finish it today. :)

I read Bad Monkey. Loved it as much as all of his other books: pure summer silliness to make me laugh!

I can't wait for this book to be available. I think I'm around #20 on the hold list...

Even though I just discovered this (I can't wait to join in from the beginning for 2014!) I thought I could share some of my favorite books from this year? I do a friendly "contest" with friends every year, so I keep track! (If you read the most books, the only thing you win is respect  )

I've read 25 books so far this year. Some of my favorites were:

My Year with Eleanor by Noelle Hancock: An interesting book about a woman's "year of fear." She took Eleanor Roosevelt's advice to, "Do one thing every day that scares you" and ran with it. I was surprised at how much of this book I was jotting down for myself to refer to later. A fun read with a lot of great advice for people who are worriers or afraid to take risks in their every day lives. Loved this one.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender: I couldn't understand the concept of this book from the jacket blurb. A girl can taste feelings in food? What? But the narrative is so lovely, and it all makes sense within the story. Definitely my favorite of the year so far, with high re-read potential.

Thanks for sharing your book list with us! These 2 sound especially intriguing to me (that's one of my favorite quotes!) - need to add them to my "to read" list...

It's NEVER too late to join! So glad you found us!

Just noticed that you are well over your goal for 2013. Congrats for making it!! As far as I know, you are the first one to make goal! :cheer2:

What's my prize? :woohoo::rotfl:

I was going to up it but then I started school fulltime, in addition to working fulltime, so I thought I'd keep it at 25. I'm undecided on keeping it at 25 next year or upping it to 30. I will be working and going to school again so who knows.

At the end of the year we should all share what our favorite book (or top 3) was for the year.

That's a REALLY good idea!!! And I'm so thankful I kept a running list of my books; otherwise I'd be up a creek trying to remember what I read, lol.

Favorite book for 2013 and also what we're looking forward to reading the most in 2014. :thumbsup2

Ladies Night
Mary Kay Andrews

Grace Stanton’s life as a rising media star and beloved lifestyle blogger takes a surprising turn when she catches her husband cheating and torpedoes his pricey sports car straight into the family swimming pool. Grace suddenly finds herself locked out of her palatial home, checking account, and even the blog she has worked so hard to develop in her signature style. Moving in with her widowed mother, who owns and lives above a rundown beach bar called The Sandbox, is less than ideal. So is attending court-mandated weekly "divorce recovery" therapy sessions with three other women and one man for whom betrayal seems to be the only commonality. When their “divorce coach” starts to act suspiciously, they decide to start having their own Wednesday "Ladies' Night" sessions at The Sandbox, and the unanticipated bonds that develop lead the members of the group to try and find closure in ways they never imagined. Can Grace figure out a new way home and discover how strong she needs to be to get there?

I had high hopes for this book and couldn't wait to start it.

The beginning was very similar to the book Hissy Fit. I thought it was going to be great! Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. After the first few chapters it got really slow. There really is no pay off in the end...No wrapping up of loose ends...

Oh well.
