2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

#35 - Senseless by Mary Burton

The vicious burns scarring the victims' flesh reveal the agony of their last moments. Each woman was branded with a star, then stabbed through the heart. With every death, a vengeful killer finds a brief, blissful moment of calm. But soon it's time for the bloodshed to start again. Ten years ago, Eva Rayburn and her sorority sisters were celebrating the end of the school year. That party turned into a nightmare Eva can't forget. Now she's trying to start over in her Virginia hometown, but a new nightmare has begun. Every victim is linked to her. And Detective Deacon Garrison isn't sure whether this mysterious woman needs investigating - or protecting. Only Eva's death will bring peace. Only her tortured screams will silence the rage that has been building for ten long years. Because what started that night at the sorority can never be stopped - not until the last victim has been marked for death.

Very good book. I did guess the killer about 2/3rds of the way but the story was still told well.

City Of Glass
Cassandra Clare

To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters—never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City—whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the third installment of bestselling series the Mortal Instruments.

I liked this the best out of the series so far, but I am tiring of it. I am getting bored with the characters so I think I am going to take a break from the series and read something else.

For anyone else who has read these books...
Were you weirded out by the Jace and Clary thing?
Spolier in white:
Even though I knew they weren't related(I read ahead) I was still a little skeeved that they kept going ON about it!

Whew, I cannot hope to catch up on the posts at this point! I have only read one book in the past 2 months because my new job has taken up all my energy. I hope to get back to reading now that I'm starting to feel under control a bit.

#39 - Sharp Objects - Gillian Flynn - Gone Girl is still my fav by far. This was good but not the same level of deviousness. I just love how in Gone Girl, she thought of every possibility and had a twist for it.

I've been trying to get through another book that is mildly interesting but I've had it expire twice through my library loan. I can't decide if I should just let it go or keep trying to finish it!

Welcome back!

Gone Girl is still my favorite too. So dark & twisted on so many levels - I've read it twice now!

What's the book you're trying to get through? Maybe some of us have read it and can either yay or nay it, lol.

Goal 120

Book #100! Longbourn by Jo Baker.

This book is about the servants in Pride and Prejudice. It's a darker story but I loved this. The main characters of P & P are sidelined and I'll be honest I was so invested in this story that I was almost impatient when Lizzy or Mr Darcy entered the story to get back to the main story. Well written and such a great premise.

Yay! Another P&P spin-off! Did you download this to your Kindle or is it a hold-in-your-hand-and-turn-the-page book? Thank you for pointing me in the direction of so many enjoyable books.

And congratulations on reaching 100 books; that's my new goal (I started out at 52, increased it to 75, and am now reading #78, I think.)

I got it on the kindle. It's a newish release so not a real cheapie one but it was worth paying extra for.

The kindle has been great for my reading-lots of cheap downloads that are easy to read.

BTW we may need a P & P support group soon-we're a bit out of control :rotfl:

Book #75 - Lullaby by Claire Seeber

What should have been a happy family day out quickly turns into a nightmare for Jess Finnegan. One minute she is thankful for a few minutes' peace away from the demands of motherhood. The next she is frantically searching for husband Mickey and 8-month old Louis. They have disappeared, nowhere to be seen. As the police launch a massive manhunt, Jess's panic intensifies.

Then Mickey is found, badly beaten – and alone. Where is Louis? Is he still alive? Could he be the victim of child trafficking or something much closer to home? Just how well does Jess know her new husband? And when her wayward brother turns up out of the blue, what is he after? As the investigation unravels, Jess discovers that the people closest to you are not always what they seem...

I have to say, when I first started reading this book, some 10 days ago, I was absolutely hooked within the first few pages. The book starts well and quickly builds to a crescendo of mystery and uncertainty over who you can and can't trust. In the end, though, there were a lot of twists and turns which didn't really make a lot of sense and, having finished the book, it seems as though the characters were really only introduced into the book to try and keep you guessing as they served no other real purpose. All in all, the start was very good but I wasn't overly impressed with the rest of the book. I really struggled to finish it, especially once the baby was found and the author then dragged the story on needlessly.

Not sure what I will be reading next, I feel the need for something quite light-hearted

I think you're right about the support group! Of course, it looks like it's you and me as of this time. Are you brought to mind of any other DISers with our affliction? (Does that sound "Jane-ish" enough?:rotfl2:)

Book #80 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them by Newt Scamander (JK Rowling)

I am unbelievably excited for this movie. I thought movies about the world of Harry Potter were over but so glad they decided to make a movie about his adventures! I hope it's good!

#37 - The Prophetess by Brenda Wood

In December 1999, Catherine Alexander discovers six ancient papyrus scrolls that reveal a hidden history of the world and its religions, but a seventh scroll, containing unimaginable power, is missing and Catherine must dodge government agents, Vatican operatives, and more to locate it.

Umm! This book was ok. Definitely nothing I would read again.

Goal - 100 books

Book #58 - "The Last Dragonslayer" by Jasper Fforde

From Goodreads: In the good old days, magic was indispensable—it could both save a kingdom and clear a clogged drain. But now magic is fading: drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and magic carpets are used for pizza delivery. Fifteen-year-old foundling Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for magicians—but it’s hard to stay in business when magic is drying up. And then the visions start, predicting the death of the world’s last dragon at the hands of an unnamed Dragonslayer. If the visions are true, everything will change for Kazam—and for Jennifer. Because something is coming. Something known as . . . Big Magic.

I really liked this book. I love this author! I have loved the entire Thursday Next series, as well as the Nursery Crime series. When I found out that he is writing a series for YA, I was in! This did not disappoint. There is the trademark Jasper Fforde humor, which was delightful! If you are not a fan of his work, you'll not like this book, but I can't wait for my daughter to read it!

Next up "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho
